Introduction to Solid Mechanics KCE 402

1. A closely coiled helical spring made of wire 5mm in diameter and having an inside
diameter of 40mm joins two shafts. The effective no of coils between the shafts is 15
and 0.735KW is transmitted through the spring at 1000 rpm. Calculate the relative
axial twist in degrees between the ends of spring and also the intensity of bearing
stress in the materials.
2. An open coiled helical spring made from wire of circular cross section is required to
carry a load of 120N. The wire diameter is 8mm and mean coil radius is 48mm. If the
helix angle of spring is 30 degree and no of turns is 12. Calculate axial deflection and
axial rotation of free end with respect to the fixed end of spring.
3. A helical spring is made of 16mm diameter steel wire by winding it on a 140 mm
diameter mandrel. If there are 12 active turns, then what is spring constant?
Determine the load applied to elongate the spring by 35mm, G = 8.2 X 104MPa
4. A steel cylinder is 2000mm long, 1000mm diameter, 10mm thick, after being filled
with water at atmospheric pressure more water is pumped in until the pressure is
increased to 2 MPa. On relieving the pressure, water let out measured is 2900cm 3.
Estimate the bulk modulus of water .consider poison's ratio 0.3
5. A cylindrical water tank of height 25m, inside diameter 2.2m, having vertical axis is
opened at top. The tank is made up of steel having yield stress 210MN/sqm.
Determine the thickness of steel used when tank is full of water. Efficiency of
longitudinal joint is 70% with FOS 3
6. In a cylindrical shell of 0.6m diameter, 0.9m long is subjected to an internal pressure
1.2MPa, thickness of cylinder wall is 15mm. Determine longitudinal stress,
circumferential stress and maximum shear stress induced and change in diameter,
length and volume of cylindrical shell.
7. A thin cylinder of 150mm internal diameter, 2.5mm thickness has its ends closed by
rigid plates and is then filled with water. When an axial pull of 40kN is applied to the
ends, the water pressure is observed to fall by 0.1MPa. E = 200GPa, k= 2.2GPa, find
poison's ratio for the material of cylinder.
8. A pipe 250mm internal diameter and 75 mm thickness carries fluid at pressure of
15MPa.Calculate the maximum and minimum intensities of circumferential stresses
across the section. Also sketch the radial stress distribution and circumferential stress
distribution across the section.
