What is Journalistic writing?
Journalistic writing is a style of writing that is used to report news stories in a variety of
media formats such as (newspaper, television, broadcast, or radio and on the internet).
Characteristics of the style include short, simple sentences and paragraphs that present
objective stories based on facts.
Journalist is a person who collects, writes, news or other current information to the
public. A journalist's work is called journalism. What do you read most often in a news
story? Why are you reading some news?
Here are the features that make up a journalistic text:
A. Parts of the news
❖ Headline – this should be catchy to capture the reader’s attention.
❖ Orientation or the 5Ws. (Who, What, Where, When and Why)
This can often just be one sentence outlining the story
❖ Main body of text written in paragraphs
B. Language Features
❖ Picture and Caption - A snapshot showing a part of the story you are reporting
❖ Generally written in the past tense (you are reporting something that has already
happened, although some points might refer to the present or future)
