GOOD NEWS: THE BENEFITS
OF MILK CHOCOLATE HAVE
BEEN UNWRAPPED
Dark chocolate has for some time
been regarded as the prodigal
son of confectionery, a
reformed nutritional sinner
welcomed back into the flock
of clean eating on account of
its antioxidant profile.
Poor, sugary milk chocolate,
on the other hand, is still
considered the bad boy waster of
the corner shop.
Until now. University of
Aberdeen researchers have chanced
upon a sweet deal that will make
chocolate binges guilt-free. The
study, published in the journal
Heart, found that enjoying 100
grams of milk chocolate a week
– handily, that’s seven small
Freddo bars (with a bite to
spare) to you and us – lowers
your chance of death from heart
disease by 25 per cent and your
stroke risk by 23 per cent.
The polyphenols beloved of
Lindt 85 per cent cocoa
enthusiasts? Turns out there is
(almost) equal benefit in your
bar of Dairy Milk. Admittedly,
we can’t promise it will do much
for your six-pack; neither are
we suggesting KitKats are the
new kale. But at least there’s
some virtue to be found in a
chocolate-induced sugar coma.

To call it merely a log – nearly
10 metres long, weighing
650 kilograms – is like calling
a giant redwood a tree.
Technically accurate, sure, but not quite doing
it justice. Like a giant redwood, the record for
carrying this monstrosity has stood for 1000
years. Legend has it that, after 50 men helped
him get the log in place, the record-holder,
fabled Viking Orm Storulfsson, managed three
steps. On the third step, his back broke.
To call Hafþór Björnsson – over 2m tall and
weighing 185kg – just a “man” doesn’t quite do
him justice, either. But stood there, the
mountainous Icelander looks like an ant
beneath a matchstick. He screams to the
assembled onlookers – to the gods, to himself
– and grasps the thick ropes that bind the log.
Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the log rises from
the scaffold, as a pressure that could grind most
vertebrae into dust transfers to Björnsson’s
spine. He takes three steps. He feels like his
back is going to break. Nevertheless, he takes a
fourth step. And then a fifth.
All at once, Björnsson releases his grasp and
effortlessly vaults the scaffold with an athleticism
that belies his frame, crying “history” over and
over again at the top of his lungs. He has taken
his indelible place in the strongman sagas. But
his eternal spot in the dining hall of Valhalla,
alongside the Norse god-king Odin and those
fallen Viking warriors deemed worthy of honour,
will for now remain unfilled. In the meantime,
Björnsson’s stomach must be sated with a
kilogram of steak, and the histories updated.
This being February 2015 and not 1015, chief
among those is Instagram. “Nothing Can Stop
Me!!” he posts alongside a picture of him tearing

THE MH VERDICT
While spinach boasts more iron than a Soviet-era gulag, it wilts in comparison with kale’s all-round abilities.
You’re best off pairing a protein-rich steak with a side dish of the curly variety: its immune-boosting, heart-
disease-fending, complexion-brightening powers lift it above its leafy rival. The king is dead. All hail the kale.

A report released by the WHO last
October suggested bacon should
be ranked as “probably

heme – an iron-based chemical
found in most red meats – breaks
down into carcinogenic N-nitroso

throw that bin in a skip!
THE FACTS
You wouldn’t tuck in to a Winfield-

bacon is now firmly off the menu,
right? “Absolutely not,” says Tew.
“This was a case of media hype,
based on an unfinished, one-and-

merely a re-framing of evidence
from the last 20 years.” Retrieve

BY ARTHUR JONES
AUGUST 2016 89
S SOON AS ACTORS TOM HOPPER, TOBY STEPHENS
and Aussie Luke Arnold arrived at Roark Gyms in Cape Town,
South Africa, to start their Black Sails boot camp, strength coach
James White issued them a challenge: row 2000 metres on a
machine in seven minutes. In his first session, Hopper almost
fainted. Stephens felt close to a heart attack. Arnold considered
faking an injury. The test left them gasping for air, fighting panic
and questioning their manhood. They went to dark places in
their psyches. That journey may be the critical part of White’s
fitness formula, as all three men lost more fat and built more
muscle in eight weeks than they’d thought possible.

After eight weeks of

was stunning. Stephens had carved more than
10 points of his body-fat percentage. “This
was revelatory,” he says. “I’d done a lot of
gym work throughout my life, rugby training
at school, and lots of running, but the kind
of intensity that James works at was new. It
was about pushing myself further than I felt
comfortable, and feeling the euphoria and
sense of achievement afterward.”
As the oldest of the three, Stephens,
who plays Captain Flint in the series, had
to work especially hard to keep up with the
two younger men. “My body didn’t respond
as elastically, so it took longer to recover,”
he says. The three men banded together to
survive. “That’s when it was great to have
these younger guys around. They pushed me
really hard.”
Arnold presented White with a diferent
kind of training challenge. The actor, who
plays John Silver, had never done any real
training before. He smoked a bit and drank,
and often worked late into the night practising
his acting roles. “I can draw a line in my life
in the middle, where everything on one side
is the time before training with James,” says
Arnold. “In that irst row, I went into complete

opportunity I’d ever had.

Ankle Mobility
“If your ankles can’t flex when you squat or lunge, you’re
going to compensate by leaning forward,” says physical
therapist Mike Reinold.
ASSESS YOURSELF Assume a lunge position with
both knees bent 90° and the big toe of your forward foot
12 centimetres from a wall. Try to touch your front knee
to the wall. (Your knee should move over the outside of
your foot, above your fourth toe.) Switch legs and repeat
the test with the other knee. You pass if you can touch
both knees to the wall without raising your front heel
off the floor.
FIX IT Do a modified version of the test at least once a day:
assume a lunge position, right foot forward, knees bent 90°.
Hold a dowel or massage stick vertically in front of the third
toe of your right foot. Without lifting your right heel, drive your
knee to the right of the stick as far as you can. Return to the
starting position. Do 10 reps, switch legs, and repeat, driving
your left knee to the left of the stick.
TEST 2
Pelvic Tilt
Excessive sitting shortens your hip flexors, pulling your
hips forward. That hyperextends your back and
weakens your core. “Tight hips are the main cause of
back pain,” says Reinold.
ASSESS YOURSELF Lie on your back on a picnic table
with your bum at its edge. Bring your knees to your
chest, hugging them with your arms. Release and slowly
lower one leg as far as you can. Return it to your chest
