LIFE AND WORKS OF RIZAL
JOSE RIZAL, the national hero of the Philippines and pride of the Malayan race, was
born on June 19, 1861, in the town of Calamba, Laguna. He was the seventh child in a family of
11 children (2 boys and 9 girls). Both his parents were educated and belonged to distinguished
families. His father, Francisco Mercado Rizal, an industrious farmer whom Rizal called "a model
of fathers," came from Biñan, Laguna; while his mother, Teodora Alonzo y Quintos, a highly
cultured and accomplished woman whom Rizal called "loving and prudent mother," was born in
Meisic, Sta. Cruz, Manila.

At the age of 3, he learned the alphabet from his mother; at 5, while learning to read and write,
he already showed inclinations to be an artist. He astounded his family and relatives by his
pencil drawings and sketches and by his moldings of clay. At the age 8, he wrote a Tagalog
poem, "Sa Aking Mga Kabata," the theme of which revolves on the love of one’s language. In
1877, at the age of 16, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree with an average of "excellent"
from the Ateneo Municipal de Manila. In the same year, he enrolled in Philosophy and Letters at
the University of Santo Tomas, while at the same time took courses leading to the degree of
surveyor and expert assessor at the Ateneo. He finished the latter course on March 21, 1877
and passed the Surveyor’s examination on May 21, 1878; but because of his age, 17, he was
not granted license to practice the profession until December 30, 1881. In 1878, he enrolled in
medicine at the University of Santo Tomas but had to stop in his studies when he felt that the
Filipino students were being discriminated upon by their Dominican tutors.

On May 3, 1882, he sailed for Spain where he continued his studies at the Universidad
Central de Madrid. On June 21, 1884, at the age of 23, he was conferred the degree of
Licentiate in Medicine and on June 19,1885, at the age of 24, he finished his course in
Philosophy and Letters with a grade of "excellent." Having traveled extensively in Europe,
America and Asia, he mastered 22 languages. These include Arabic, Catalan, Chinese, English,
French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Malayan, Portuguese, Russian,
Sanskrit, Spanish, Tagalog, and other native dialects. A versatile genius, he was an architect,
artists, businessman, cartoonists, educator, economist, ethnologist, scientific farmer, historian,
inventor, journalist, linguist, musician, mythologist, nationalist, naturalist, novelist, ophthalmic
surgeon, poet, propagandist, psychologist, scientist, sculptor, sociologist, and theologian. He
was an expert swordsman and a good shot.

In the hope of securing political and social reforms for his country and at the same time
educate his countrymen, Rizal, the greatest apostle of Filipino nationalism, published, while in
Europe, several works with highly nationalistic and revolutionary tendencies. In March 1887, his
daring book, NOLI ME TANGERE, a satirical novel exposing the arrogance and despotism of
the Spanish clergy, was published in Berlin; in 1890 he reprinted in Paris, Morga’s
SUCCESSOS DE LAS ISLAS FILIPINAS with his annotations to prove that the Filipinos had a
civilization.

worthy to be proud of even long before the Spaniards set foot on Philippine soil; on September
18, 1991, EL FILIBUSTERISMO, his second novel and a sequel to the NOLI and more
revolutionary and tragic than the latter, was printed in Ghent.

Because of his fearless exposures of the injustices committed by the civil and clerical
officials, Rizal provoked the animosity of those in power. This led himself, his relatives and
countrymen into trouble with the Spanish officials of the country. As a consequence, he and
those who had contacts with him, were shadowed; the authorities were not only finding faults
but even fabricating charges to pin him down. Thus, he was imprisoned in Fort Santiago from
July 6, 1892 to July 15, 1892 on a charge that anti-friar pamphlets were found in the luggage of
his sister Lucia who arrive with him from Hong Kong. While a political exile in Dapitan, he
engaged in agriculture, fishing and business; he maintained and operated a hospital; he
conducted classes- taught his pupils the English and Spanish languages, the arts. The
sciences, vocational courses including agriculture, surveying, sculpturing, and painting, as well
as the art of self defense; he did some researches and collected specimens; he entered into
correspondence with renowned men of letters and sciences abroad; and with the help of his
pupils, he contracted water dam and a relief map of Mindanao- both considered remarkable
engineering feats.

His sincerity and friendliness won for him the trust and confidence of even those assigned to
guard him; his good manners and warm personality were found irresistible by women of all
races with whom he had personal contacts; his intelligence and humility gained for him the
respect and admiration of prominent men of other nations; while his undaunted courage and
determination to uplift the welfare of his people were feared by his enemies. When the
Philippine Revolution started on August 26, 1896, his enemies lost no time in pressing him
down. They were able to enlist witnesses that linked him with the revolt and these were never
allowed to be confronted by him. Thus, from November 3, 1986, to the date of his execution, he
was again committed to Fort Santiago. In his prison cell, he wrote an untitled poem, now known
as "Ultimo Adios" which is considered a masterpiece and a living document expressing not only
the hero’s great love of country but also that of all Filipinos. After a mock trial, he was convicted
of rebellion, sedition and of forming illegal association. In the cold morning of December 30,
1896, Rizal, a man whose 35 years of life had been packed with varied activities which proved
that the Filipino has capacity to equal if not excel even those who treat him as a slave, was shot
at Bagumbayan Field.

REFLECTION PAPER
Pluma: Si Rizal, ang dakilang manunulat
After watching the documentary about our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, I felt proud to
say I am a Filipino. It inspired to become a better citizen in our own country. Philippines
is very rich in culture especially in history, history that should continue to pass on to
generation to other generation. The history about Jose Rizal is very inspiring in a way
that you would ask yourself, what can I do for my country, can I do the same thing that
Rizal did, can I sacrifice my life in order to save my fellow countrymen, what is like to
be Rizal? These are some question that I’ve been asking. Rizal is not just a hero but
rather a symbol of unity. Without Rizal will there be freedom, I think the answer is no
because the moment Rizal died, our fellow Filipino realize the time has come to fight
back, we can no longer ignore the abusive authority, this is our country we should be
the ones setting rules not them or telling what are the things we can do or not.

Pen is mightier than a sword, I do believe in that quotation. Rizal two novels
made the Spaniards frighten. The first novel: Noli Me Tangere published in Europe to
spread the wrongdoings of the Spanish priest and how they abuse their power. It is
written in Spanish because they are the audience and after a few copy sent to the
Philippines they banned the novel. I think the reason behind it is they are guilty of their
wrongdoings and it might be the start of a revolution against them. The novel is truly an
art that full of passion and one day I also want to write a novel that can influence my
audience, to share my thoughts and ideas and most of all to inspire them. Writing is not
as easy as it seems because ideas doesn’t come as whole it would take time to process
it to become a thing that can influence and allure the audience to listen and make a
further understanding. It is truly amazing when you write something and publish it will
become forever because as the documentary said pen can write ideas, you can kill the
writer but not the idea.
Blood is thicker than water. People may turn their back to Rizal but not his family.
They may not agree in every decision that Rizal make but they always support him. I
admire his brother Paciano for pushing Rizal to go to Europe to learn more and 5

enhance his skills. We all have different family and we cannot choose them
because it is up to the Lord who or what kind of family you will belong. I am lucky as
Rizal is because I’ve been bless with the kind and loving family that always look after
me and support and guide me in everything I experience in life. Some people do not
have family because they were abandoned before they can even learn to speak. Rizal
will not be the hero we all knew without his family like her mother taught him to read, to
respect the elders and other good things. Maybe Rizal also wants to save our country
so he can also save his parents and brother and sisters from the abusive Spaniards.

Our culture will not be as great as we know if the foreign countries did not
colonize us. One of the good things that the Spaniards brought here is the Christian
religion, without their teachings we would not known our heavenly Father, the tradition,
the bible and other things about religion. Rizal was religious specifically when he was
young. I remember in my childhood days when my grandmother and I encounter
someone we knew, they will have a little bit of chat and then they would ask me to pray
before I start I would ask in English or Tagalog? They would laugh at first then tell me
what do they preferred.

It is my first time to know the names of the woman who have been romantically
related to Rizal, I knew that she had several girlfriends but I did not expect in every
country he has visited which amaze me by that fact. If I were Rizal traveling around the
world I do not think I would have that kind of relationship, I may admire the good looking
people around me but not in the way I would have relationship among them and then
ended it if I leave the country. I would never have the confidence to date two people at
the same time. I admire Rizal because upon courting or dating the two ladies named
“Leonor”, he was never caught and I’m curious about it, why would he court Leonor
Valenzuela if Leonor Rivera was his long time girlfriend for eleven or twelve years and
got his heart broke when Rivera got married to another man. If I am in a relationship I
definitely stay committed to one person I truly love.
In the end I learned there is lot to discover about our national hero and a lot of
mystery that does not have a conclusion. I admire Rizal for his undying love for our
country. 6

REFLECTION PAPER
Ang buhay ng isang dakilang bayani
From the very start of the movie, I noticed how significant all the
event is. The story that the movie wants to evoke really strikes me and brings me to our
national hero’s life before. It made my mind clearly understands all the flow of our
history, how it starts, and how it ends and also those people who made the very impact
just to save the country. This movie is must to watch, this reminds me of what’s really
happening in the reality. Just like Rizal, we Filipinos must follow his acts and the way he
thinks, I am not saying that he is perfect but the actions he has done is really worthy.
While watching the movie suddenly something strikes on my mind that what if all
Filipinos act like him? Is the country would suffer the immoral endeavors? Probably no,
a big no because if we are truly dedicated to serve our country, we will not experience
these things.

I so much admire Dr. Jose Rizal of his pure heart and sincere
love for the country. At a young age, he can already visualize the events happening in
the society, especially the cruelty and decadent governing and not only that, he also
thinks of ways on how he can help the country just to have our freedom. I learned not to
be self-centered because I know that I am a citizen of this country and have the rights to
pursue what is right and serve the country for the better. Throughout of Rizal’s life, he
gives majority of his time to study even his loved one will be far from him as we can see,
that’s how he thinks. He’s doing that to be knowledgeable enough for one day he will
raise the country from brutality and violence that’s how he loves our country and we
must do that also not just for ourselves but also for other, let’s open our mind and heart
to correct the wrong undertakings.

It is not late, we should change the way we think and act because
our society is not in the good condition. In order to achieve the fulfillment and progress,
we should always put the Almighty in our hearts for He will be our guide and light to
obtain the good development of our country. Let’s embrace the Filipino cultures and put
in mind the values of what our national hero has done, by that we will be able to know
the upright virtue that no one can get. We should never forget the learning that Rizal
wants to imply on us, we must absorb it and put in our mind, heart, and soul.

REFLECTION PAPER
Rizal sa Dapitan 1997
Difficulties are not the reasons to give up but an inspiration to move on.” This dictum I
think was on the mind of Dr. Jose P. Rizal when he was in Dapitan. He never gave up
serving our country’s cause, even though the Spanish tried to deteriorate his life by
threatening.

On July 17, 1892 the day when his exile began in Dapitan where he suffered, harassed
and threatened his life by the Spaniards. This exile also strengthened his nationalism,
love for his family, for the people of Dapitan and where his happiness happened.

In Dapitan, he was an exemplary person to the youth because he builds school for
theme. Furthermore, he taught his students arnis, wrestling, boxing and swimming
without tuition fees.

Rizal also gave medical assistance and free medicines to the poor person which was a
very sincere action. He also operated his mother’s right eye in Dapitan.

One thing that I adored when he was in Dapitan was his community projects which
consisted of water system and lighting system where the life of the people became
easier.

He became also a farmer, businessman and a scientist and inventor in Dapitan where
he became famous.

While he was in Dapitan, someone threatened his life and that was Florencio Namanan
(Pablo Mercado) where Rizal showed his excellence in martial arts,

He met Josephine Bracken in Dapitan who later became his wife. The relationship of
the two was opposed by Father Antonio Obach where he degraded Rizal as a person.
That instance, strengthened his love for Josephine and late was pregnant but sadly it
was miscarried.

Dr. Pio Valenzuela went to Dapitan to tell Rizal about the plans of the Katipunan which
was objected by him. And on July 31, 1896 Rizal’s exile came to an end.

Truly the movie “Rizal sa Dapitan” was a very good movie because it showcased how
Rizal love the country. This is a movie for the Filipino and must be treasured because of
its nationalistic theme. No doubt, Rizal’s life was very exciting and purposeful.
