Solvent Based Adhesive is a glue based solvent for bonding any materials such
as papers, woods, plastics, metals, rubbers, foams, leathers, etc. The performance
of solvent-based adhesives is largely determined by the polymer system in
the formulation.
The choice of adhesive type depends on the specific substrates and environmental
resistance needed – temperature resistance, oil and plasticizer resistance, etc. Most
solvent based adhesives contain flammable solvents which require proper
precautions for safe handling. In addition, many organic solvents are regulated due to
environmental concerns with emissions.
Within each type of solvent based adhesive, formulations are available to match the
application requirements of the process – brush, roll, bead or ribbon, spray. Once the
adhesive is applied, solvent evaporates relatively quickly causing an increase in
viscosity of the adhesive film. Bonds can be made immediately after adhesive
application or after some solvent has evaporated but before the adhesive has dried
to the point where it will no longer wet (open time).
Waiting for some evaporation prior to bonding (set time) increases the initial
strength of the adhesive bond and allows assemblies to be processed more quickly.
Hot melt adhesive (HMA), also known as hot glue, is a form of thermoplastic
adhesive that is commonly supplied in solid cylindrical sticks of various diameters,
pieces, and granules.
In industrial use, hot melt adhesives provide several advantages over solventbased
adhesives. Volatile organic compounds are reduced or eliminated, and the drying or
curing step of manufacture is eliminated. Hot melt adhesives have long shelf life and
usually can be disposed of without special precautions. Some of the disadvantages
involve thermal load of the substrate, limiting use to substrates not sensitive to
higher temperatures, and loss of bond strength at higher temperatures, up to
complete melting of the adhesive. This can be reduced by using a reactive adhesive
that after solidifying undergoes further curing e.g. by moisture (e.g. reactive
urethanes and silicones), or is cured by ultraviolet radiation. Some HMAs may not be
resistant to chemical attacks and weathering. HMAs do not lose thickness during
solidifying; solvent-based adhesives may lose up to 50-70% of layer thickness during
drying.
High quality water based paints offer not just an excellent all around Performance
profile, they are also a good choice from an environmental perspective.
