Lesson Title ARE Assertion Reasoning Evidence
HOW TO MAKE A GOOD ARGUMENT?
Objective Ss will be able tostate an assertion, back it
up with a reason, and
support that reason with evidence on the
topic: Mobile phones should be banned at
schools.
Materials/Resources Core material: Debate Junior 3 – Unit 8
Assertion topic list, back up reasons,
related evidences (statements will can be
cut into individual color-coded pieces)
Argumentation worksheet with definitions-
one per student
ARE grid worksheet-one per st
Anticipatory Set 5 mins Ask Ss and collect responses, using erasable
whiteboard.
“Have you ever tried to convince your
parents that
you should get something? What did you
do? Does it
always work? Why? Why not? How can you
improve?
When do you have to argue? Do you always
win? What are
some things people do to win? Where do
we need the skills
to argue? How will a set of guidelines help
you succeed?”
Procedure - Students will be divided into 5
10 mins groups of 5. They will be given sets
of color-coded statements:
Green – Arguments
Yellow – Reasons
Red – Evidence

There will be 3 arguments repeated twice,


one of each will be supported with full ARE
Principle, while another will have only
reasons. Ss will rearrange them into
paragraphs, then decide themselves which
one is more convincing.

Arguments:
Schools should not use animals for
dissection.
Middle schools should allow cell phones.
Students should be required to wear
uniforms to school.

Explain that good arguments need
three parts.
Write/show on board the words and
definitions. Use simple word to help
remember.

Guided Practice 1 10 mins Refer to unit 9 – Debate Junior 3


- Ask Ss to use colors to mark A,R,E in
the given reading passages
- Refer to comprehension questions,
ask Ss to divide the questions and
answer into an ARE Grid. (Which
questions provide guided
informations for Reasons/ Evidence)
Guided Practice 2 15 mins Divide class into 4 teams, 2 teams will
receive ARE Grid with topic “Mobile phones
should be banned at schools”, 2 teams
receive ARE Grid with topic “Mobile phones
should NOT be banned at schools”, each
will be supported with 2 reasons/
evidences. Students have to work in groups

to fill in the Grid, and contribute their own


ideas.
Groups will then take turns to share their
ideas, and the other groups will have to
note down the ideas to prepare for next
lesson: REFUTATION.

Students will work in TEAMS and use ARE


toargue their case within the topic.
Class should be noisy and engaged.
Circulate to assist students with reasons or
evidence.

Closure 5 min Recapitulate: “You already have been using


ARE. What is A?
What is R? What is E? You have used them
for many
Years without noticing, and now you have
labels for the parts.
Use them in all areas of life to accomplish
things, to convince people.
Please remember to bring the note you
took to prepare for your refutation lesson.

HW: Write ARE Pinciple for the topic


Mobile phones at Schools with your own
idea.
