HISTORY OF WORD

PROCESSING
BY LA’KAYLIN HAMILTON
WHEN WAS WORD PROCESSING INVENTED?

Word processing was invented in the early 1970’s by the microsoft

corporation. The history of word processing is the story of a gradual
automation of the physical aspects of writing and editing.Software developers
Richard Brodie and Charles Simonyi joined the Microsoft team in 1981, and in
1983 they released Multi-Tool Word for computers that ran a version of the
UNIX operating system (OS)
THE FIRST MAJOR ADVANCE FROM MANUEL WRITING
The first major advance was the
typewriter. Henry Mill,who is an
English engineer of the early
eighteenth century, is credited
with this invention.BUT, it
wasn’t so much of a
success.Christopher Latham
Sholes,with the assistance of
two colleagues,invented the first
SUCCESSFUL typewriter in 1867.
WHEN DID IT BEGAN TO MARKET?

It began to market in 1874.Improbably by a gun

manufacturing company, E Remington and Sons. The main
drawback of this model was that it was printed on the
underside of the roller, only so that the typist could not view
his work until he was finished.People didn't really accept the
typewriter at first because of this, but it was facilitated over
the next several years due to various improvements.
{ The improvements }
❖ The shift key-which made it possible to type both lower case and
upper case with the same keys.(1878)
❖ Printing on the upper side of the roller(1880)
❖ The tab key-permitted the setting of margins(1897)

ELECTRIC TYPEWRITERS
The electric typewriter begin
appearing in the 1900’s.There was
one particular model called the
VARITYPER.It used a narrow
cylinder like wheel that could be
moved or replaced to change the
font.In 1941, IBM introduced a
revolutionary concept of
proportional spaces in electrical
typewriters.It created the
appearance of a printed page.
Progression in the 1960’s
❏ In 1964,The IBM brought out the MT/ST ( Magnetic tape/Selectric
typewriter),It combined the features of the selectric with the magnetic tape
drive.
❏ Magnetic tape was the first reusable storage medium for typed
information. With this, typed material could be added without having to be
retyped. On these tapes information could be stored, replayed, corrected,
reprinted, and then erased and reused for other projects.
❏ This development marked the beginning of word processing as it is known
today.
❏ So this meant office activities could be printed, composed, revised, filed and
identified written document.
PROGRESSION IN THE 1970’S
➢ In 1969 IBM introduced Magcards.Which were magnetic cards that slipped
into a box attached to the typewriter and recorded text as it was
typed.
➢ They were useful to a lot of companies. However, only about one
page-worth of text could be stored on each card.
➢ In 1972,Lexitron & Linolex developed a similar word processing system,
but it included video display screens and type cassettes for
storage. With the screen, text could be altered in any way without a
hard copy and could be delayed print until the writer was satisfied.
➢ In 1973,Vydec was the first manufacturer to produce a word processing
system using the floppy disk for storage.Previos storage systems could
only hold 1 or 2 pages of text, but these disk were capable of holding
up to 80-100 Pages.
MOVING UP TO MODERN DAY ADVANCES

The most important advance in word

processing was the change from
hardwired instructions,to software
on the disc. The programs on disc
were able to be updated more
economically,since a rewritten
program could be loaded and and Disk programs made it poracticle

other than word processing.
PRESENT DAY ADVANCEMENT
Many inventors devised improvements
for the typewriter.From the shift
key(1878),to the electric typewriter(1920).

Byt during the 1980’s, the typewriter

began to disperse.It had overcome
first by the word processor and then
by the personal computer.Which could
do everything the typewriter could do
PLUS MORE. Word processing is
now “one of the most common
general applications for personal
computers.
