Experiment No. 01
Tensile Strength of Metals and Thermoplastics
III. Materials: Mild steel, Aluminum, Brass, and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
IV. Procedures:
1. The sample was measured.
2. The diameter of the sample in three different locations, the top, center and
the tip was checked. The average of the three values was taken in order to
get the diameter of the sample.
3. The properties of the sample were defined.
4. The sample was mounted to the machine and was also secured.
5. After looking for certain parameters, it proceeded with tensile testing.
6. The machine was adjusted and the balance load was clicked to make the
load zero and the gauge length was reset.
7. After the sample broke, the test stopped and the graph was checked that
had attained through the test.
8. The broken sample was rejoined, in order to compare how much had
increase in the length as well as the measurement of the neck diameter and
the reduction of the area.
Gauge Length, mm 45 45 45
VI. Observation:
With a load of 27.44 KN, mild steel with a nominal diameter of 9mm, a
reduced diameter of 5.22, a gauge length of 45 mm, and a final length of 54.28
obtained a tensile strength of 431.133 in mPa and 62559.24 in psi. The
aluminum had a tensile strength of 228.67 or 331 165.84 psi with a nominal
diameter of 9.01, decrease diameter 5.24, gauge length 45 mm, final length
52.58, and a load of 14.58. Brass with nominal diameter, reduction diameter,
gauge length, and final length of 9.04, 8.01, 45, and 51.25 millimeters had a
tensile strength of 439.43 MPA or 71566.10 millimeters, respectively. Finally,
the PVC had a tensile strength of 447.69.
VII. Conclusion:
