1.0 PURPOSE
1.1 To lay down the procedure for Preparation and Standardization of 0.1M/0.1N Sodium
Hydroxide Solution.

2.0 APPARATUS
2.1 Burette
2.2 Iodine flask
2.3 1000 ml volumetric flask
2.4 1000 ml beaker

3.0 REAGENTS

3.1 Sodium hydroxide AR grade

3.2 Potassium Hydrogen phthalate AR grade

3.3 Phenolphthalein

4.0 PROCEDURE
4.1 Preparation:
4.1.1 Dissolve 4.2 grams of sodium hydroxide in sufficient carbon dioxide free water to
produce1000 ml.
4.2 Standardization:
4.2.1 Weigh accurately about 0.5 grams of Potassium Hydrogen phthalate, previously powdered and
dried at 120°C for 2 hours and dissolve in 75 ml of carbon dioxide free water.
4.2.2 Add 0.1ml of phenolphthalein solution and titrate with 0.1N sodium hydroxide solutions until a
permanent pink colour is produced.
4.2.3 Each ml 0.1N sodium hydroxide = 0.02042 g of Potassium Hydrogen phthalate.
