EXPERIMENT NO. 5

Aim: Measurement of flatness of a sine bar

Introduction:
The flatness may be defined as the minimum distance between two planes which cover all the
irregularities of the surface under examination.
The bed of table of a machine should be a perfectly flat surface. It is required in machine tool
that one part sub-assembly is moving or sliding on another reference surface. Now if this
reference surface is not flat, the product produced will be defective. This will lead to wastage of
man power and material. So it is necessary to check the flatness of such surfaces.
Equipments:

1. Sine bar (job)

2. Surface Plate
3. Dial indicator with magnetic stand

Figure 5.1 Measurement of flatness

Procedure:
1. Clean the surface plate.
2. Put the sine bar on the surface plate.
3. Divide the surface of sine bar into equal six blocks by drawing vertical and horizontal
lines on the sine bar by a soft pencil as shown in the figure 5.1.
4. Put the stand on the surface plate.
5. Fix the dial indicator in the stand.
6. Adjust the plunger on pint 1 with little pressure.
7. Adjust the pointer to zero.
8. Now move the stand and keep the plunger on point 2,3,4…..12 etc. and note the reading
each time. It may be positive or negative.
