SADT Analysis of Job Shop Production at Massy Energy Fabric Maintenance

(MEFM)

Insulation Systems using FOAMGLAS

Description of Job:

At Massy Energy Fabric Maintenance, we are primarily responsible for industrial insulation. At the Atlantic
LNG facility, our maintenance contract requires us to remove damaged insulation at the client’s request
and reinsulate the piping on the LNG facility. For removal of insulation for inspection purposes, a job shop
scenario is usually conducted when insulation material is required. A specific thickness and length of
insulation material is required.

DESIGN-

I1- Client requirements and information (Damaged insulation located on piping needs to be removed
and reinsulated in 3 days from requested date)

C1- Insulation specification (ALNG Cold Insulation Specification), Piping temperature, Pipe diameter and
Selection criteria are the controls utilized for determining the type of insulation, thickness and
length required.

M1- Testing Tools and devices (Computer program, 3E Plus and Excel are utilized for design and pricing)

O1- Chosen insulation type and thickness (based on the temperature of piping)

PLANNING STAGE-

I2- Chosen insulation type (Foamglass based on cryogenic piping)

C2- Pipe dimensions (information from site supervisor) and insulation thickness (from specifications and
computer program)

M2- Testing Tools and devices.

O2- Work schedule, final insulation dimensions and length required, material requisition.

1
PRODUCTION STAGE-

I3- Chosen insulation material, work schedule, skilled labour requirements.

C3- Thickness of insulation, length of insulation and workmanship.

M3- Fabrication equipment.

O3- Insulation dimensions fit specifications.

DISTRIBUTION STAGE-

I4- Packing information on insulation indicating insulation thickness, length, quantity and location to
be used on site.

C4- Costs (Purchase order in hand) and on time delivery to site.

M4- 3 Ton Truck transport to site at Point Fortin (Atlantic LNG)

O4- Packed insulation and delivery service to Atlantic (inclusive of delivery notes

Remarks: SADT could apply to the administrative part of a business (RFQ. Quotation. Approval. Invoicing)

*** Comments: As claimed that the product (i.e., Insulation Systems using FOAMGLAS)
is being made via the jobbing production system, the elements of 4 respective categories
are elaborately included. Overall, this is good attempt to demonstrate the application of
SADT to illustrate/describe the analysis of production system for making Product X.

*** Comments: Nevertheless, you (or your team) only address one part of the exercise.
You are asked to use any chosen examples for "X", "Y" and "Z" products/services that
could demonstrate the interrelationship among them, with respect to addressing the
characteristics of the jobbing, batch and flow production/operations process.

*** Comments: Based on the product specifications that you provided, FOAMGLAS is a
registered product developed by Pittsburgh Corning, for a wide range of piping and
equipment applications. Therefore, you would have no or very little venue to talk about

2
making FOAMGLAS. In other words, you could focus on using the product, i.e., the
applications and/or the claimed Insulation Systems designed and developed by MEFM.
If so, you need to re-think HOW to fit into three types/kinds of products (services) that
could apply SADT to illustrate/demonstrate the interrelationship among them and their
production/operations process.

*** Comments: To address your additional question, the answer is “YES”. The
administrative part of a business (RFQ. Quotation. Approval. Invoicing) would be typical
examples of 4 core categories of “I”, “C”, “M” and “O” in various stages during the
production/operations process.
