WH-6 Hydraulic-Set
Retrievable Packer
The Weatherford WH-6 Hydraulic-Set Retrievable Packer is a compact,
economical, packer designed for low- to medium-pressure applications. The
short body length makes it ideal for tight radius deviations and horizontal
applications. The packer requires no downward mandrel movement for setting,
allowing stacked applications. Straight pull releases the packer, and built-in
bypass ports equalize pressure across the packer for ease in retrieval. The
shear-release mechanism is isolated from the packer hydraulics to allow low
release forces, even at full pressure differential.

SETTING PROCEDURE
Run in the hole to setting depth. (Running speed should not exceed 90 ft./min.) The Weatherford WH-6 Packer is set
by temporarily plugging the tubing string below the packer and applying pressure (see maximum / minimum chart,
page 2) inside the tubing. The tubing may be plugged by dropping a ball to seat in an expandable seating sub run
below the packer or by running a wireline plug to seat in a profile nipple or sliding sleeve run below the packer.

In installations where the Weatherford WH-6 packers are run in tandem, one temporary plug run below the bottom
packer is all that is required to set the packers. Pressuring the tubing will set all the packers simultaneously, or by
adjusting the setting shear values of each packer, the packers can be set individually.

RELEASING PROCEDURE
The Weatherford WH-6 packer is released by straight pickup on the tubing string. Tension force required to release
the packer is easily adjusted prior to running in. (See parts list for release screw values.)

OPERATION
The Weatherford WH-6 employs a lock mandrel to capture pack off forces independent of the inner mandrel, which
makes up to the production string. The lock mandrel isolates the pack off forces from the shear release screws,
allowing low shear-to-release forces regardless of pressure differential.

The overlapping piston assembly, made up of the piston and upper cone, located between the packing elements and
slips permit the packer to set without downward mandrel movement. Applied pressure is conveyed to the piston
through the bypass slots in the mandrel and the port in the lock mandrel. As pressure is applied, the piston moves
upward, packing off the elements against the shear sub. Likewise, the lower cone moves down which forces the slips
outward against the casing wall.

The packer is released with straight pull on the tubing string. Tension is pulled to shear the release screws
. The mandrel travels upward, which removes the support under the collet on the lock mandrel. The shoulder on the
mandrel stops on the lock mandrel, which lifts the lock mandrel, allowing the lower cone to fall away. The slips and
elements are allowed to move downward, unsetting the packer.

ASSEMBLY 5-1/2”
1. Install two back-up rings (14) and o-ring (15) inside of upper cone (20).
2. Install lock ring (21) onto upper cone (20).

3. Install two back-up rings (16) and o-ring (17) onto the outside of upper cone
(20).
4. Stand lock mandrel (6) on floor with finger side down.
5. Install upper cone (20) onto lock mandrel (6) with the cone end down. Bump
upper cone down until snap ring groove is accessible.

8. Place piston (19) in vise.
9. Install lock mandrel (6) with the upper cone (20) into piston (19). (Threaded 5

11. Tap upper cone (20) into piston (19) until lock ring (21) reaches the inside 9

12. Rotate upper cone (20) to thread lock ring (21) onto piston (19). Hold

pressure against upper cone while doing this, otherwise lock ring will pull 8
away and ratchet down upper cone. Thread this until shear screw holes in 7

assembly.
18. Install and secure slips (25) and slip springs (26) into slip cage (24). 21

20. Install two back-up rings (3) and o-ring (4) onto lower end of mandrel (30). 23

22. Tap the mandrel (30) into the lock mandrel (6) until the recessed area is 25
under the fingers of the lock mandrel and far enough so that the lower cone 26

23. Install two back-up rings (3) and o-ring (4) into groove in upper end of
mandrel (30). 23
24. Install lower cone (27) onto mandrel (30) and into slip cage (24). 27
25. Install torque screws (23) into upper and lower cones (20 & 27). 28
26. Tap the upper end of the mandrel (30) into the shear sub (5) until the groove
in the mandrel lines up with the shear screw holes in the shear sub. 29
27. Install lower cone connector (29) onto lock mandrel (6) and onto lower cone
(27). Install set screws (28) in lower cone connector (29).
28. Install shear screws (2) into shear sub (5).
29. Make up top coupling (1) onto the top of the mandrel (30) 30
30. Place top coupling (1) in vise. Support lower end of mandrel (30) and tighten
mandrel in top coupling (1).
31. After pressure testing replace test bolts with shear screws (22).

NOTE: Install back-up rings before installing o-rings.
Place cuts in back-up rings 180° apart. 1

1. Install o-ring (12) and two back-ups (11) in ID of piston (18).

2. Install gage ring (7) on to piston (18).

3. Install o-ring (15) and two back-ups (14) on ID of upper cone (19). 3
4. Insert square key (21) into slot on upper cone (19) and tack weld both ends. 4

5. Slide slip cage (24) onto upper cone (19) until it shoulders on lip of upper 5

6. Place slip cage (24) in vise on top end of slip cage. 7
7. Install lock ring (20) onto upper cone (19). 8
8. Install o-ring (16) and two back-ups (17) onto OD of upper cone (19). 9
9. Install and secure slips (25) complete with slip springs (26) in slip cage (24). 10
10. Install torque screws (23) into upper cone (19). 9
11. Assemble lock mandrel (6) from bottom end of upper cone (19). Bump lock

mandrel up until spiroloc ring (13) groove is visible. 7
12. Install spiroloc ring (13) onto lock mandrel (6). 11 12
13. Place piston (18) in vise with end next to gage ring (7) in vise. 14 13
14. Assemble upper cone (19) with lock mandrel (6) into piston (18). Bump lock 15

mandrel along with upper cone up until lock ring (20) is capable of being
threaded into piston. Use slip cage (24) to thread upper cone (19) into 18
piston. Hold pressure against the upper cone while doing this, otherwise lock
ring will pull away and ratchet down upper cone. Thread lock ring (20) until 19
shear screw holes in the piston (18) line up with groove in upper cone (19).

No more than ½ of the body lock ring should be visible through the sight 21
holes in piston (18). 22
15. Install shear screws (22) into piston (18) to secure upper cone. 23
16. Install o-ring (4) and back-ups (3) onto mandrel (28) on lower end. 24
17. Assemble mandrel (28) into upper cone (19) until mandrel shoulders on lock 25

19. Locate shoulder of mandrel (28) under lock mandrel (6) collet by bumping

mandrel down from top end.
20. Install elements (8 & 10) and rubber spacers (9) onto piston (18) as shown

21. Install gage ring (7) onto shear sub (5).
22. Install shear sub (5) onto lock mandrel (6) while holding back up on lock
mandrel (6) collet.
23. Bump mandrel (28) up from bottom end until mandrel shoulders on lock 28
mandrel (6).
24. Assemble lower cone (27) over bottom end of mandrel (28) until lower cone
snaps onto lock mandrel (6) collet. Install torque screws (23) in lower cone
(27) through slots in slip cage (24).
25. Push mandrel (28) from top until mandrel shoulders on lower cone (27).
26. Install shear screws (2) in shear sub (5). 29
27. Install top sub (1) on mandrel (28).
28. Install bottom sub (29) on mandrel (28).

1. Place coupling (1) in vise.
2. Remove bottom sub (29) from mandrel (28).
3. Remove torque screws (23) from upper and lower cones (19 & 27).
4. Remove lower cone (27) from mandrel (28).
5. Remove slips (25) and slip springs (26) from slip cage (24). 3

6. Loosen mandrel (28) from coupling (1). 3
7. Place piston (18) in vise near lower gage ring (7). 2
8. Remove coupling (1) from mandrel (28).
9. Remove mandrel (28) from lower end of packer. 5
10. Remove back-ups (3) and o-rings (4) from mandrel (28). 6
11. Remove slips (25) and slip springs (26) from slip cage (24).
12. Remove shear screws (2) from shear sub (5). 7
13. Place back-up on lower end of lock mandrel (6) and remove shear sub (5). 8
14. Remove upper gage ring (7) from shear sub (5).

15. Remove packing elements (8 & 10) and rubber spacers (9) from piston (18).
16. Remove lower gage ring (7) from piston (18). 10
17. Remove shear screws (22) from piston (18). 9
18. Rotate upper cone (19) to remove upper cone and lock ring (20) out of 8
piston (18).
19. Remove o-ring (16) and back-up rings (17) from upper cone (19). 7
20. Remove lock ring (20) from upper cone (19). 11 12
21. Remove spiroloc ring (13) from lock mandrel (6). 13
22. Remove lock mandrel (6) from upper cone (19). 18
23. Remove back-up rings (14) and o-ring (15) from upper cone (19).
24. Remove back-up rings (11) and o-ring (12) from piston (18).

25. Clean and inspect all parts. 17
26. Replace any worn or damaged parts. 15 16

ASSEMBLY 7.0” X 3-1/2”

1. Install back-up rings (14) and o-ring (15) in piston (18). 1
2. Install back-up rings (14) and o-ring (15) in upper cone (19).
3. Assemble slip cage (25) onto upper cone (19) until it shoulders.
4. Place slip cage (25) in vise on upper end of slip cage.
5. Install body lock ring (20) onto upper cone (19). Lock ring should have split 2
positioned over cone key.

6. Install back-up rings (12) and o-ring (13) on upper cone (19).
7. Install slip springs (24) and slips (23) in slip cage (25). 4

8. Install cap screws (22) in upper cone (19).

9. Install lock mandrel (17) from bottom end of upper cone (19) until spiroloc
ring groove is visible. 6
10. Install spiroloc ring (16) onto lock mandrel (17). 7
11. Install upper cone (19) onto piston (18). Use slip cage (25) to thread upper 8
cone (19) onto piston (18). 9
12. Install shear screws (21) onto piston (18) to secure upper cone (19).

13. Install back-up rings (4) and o-ring (5) onto lower end of mandrel (28).
14. Slide mandrel (28) into upper cone (19) until mandrel shoulders on lock 7

15. Install back-up rings (4) and o-ring (5) onto upper end of mandrel (28). 10

16. Slide lower cone (27) onto bottom end of mandrel (28) until lower cone snaps 15

21. Slide element mandrel (10) into piston (18) and install lock wire (11).

22. Install packing elements (7 & 9) and rubber spacers (8) on element mandrel
(10) as shown on drawing.

24. Install shear sub (3) onto lock mandrel (17). 21
25. Install shear screws (2) in shear sub (3) and groove in mandrel (28). 22
26. Install coupling (1) onto mandrel (28).
