Multimedia: Audio or Video Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: Learning the pattern of the changes of the moon
Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd grade science
Content Standard Addressed: S2E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to develop an
understanding of the patterns of the sun and the moon and the sun’s effect on Earth. d. Use data from
personal observations to describe, illustrate, and predict how the appearance of the moon changes over time
in a pattern. (Clarification statement: Students are not required to know the names of the phases of the moon
or understand the tilt of the Earth.)

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
Empowered Learner – 1.1d. Students understand able to do by the end of this lesson:
the fundamental concepts of technology operations, My students will be able to describe, illustrate,
demonstrate the ability to choose, use and predict how the appearance of the moon
and troubleshoot current technologies and are able changes in a pattern over time.
to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging
technologies.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?
I will give my students the choice of using a video or podcast to explain what they learned during this
lesson. They should be able to use their selected tool and create a podcast/video to help express
their knowledge of the moon patterns.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: Anchor and Adobe Spark

Description of Software: Anchor is a free online tool used to help create, edit, and upload audio to
create episodes for a podcast. This website is very simple to use and easy for all students to navigate
through.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast,
posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an

outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
The students will be introduced to the topic through my podcast I have liked to the audio page. That
night the students will begin to analyze and draw the shape of the moon that is visible at the
moment. The following class we will all compare drawing and share some words used to describe it.
From there we will begin diving into why the moon changes. Once the students understand the
shape of the moon is caused by how much light is refracting from the sun we will then look at
images of all of these phases. During this lesson I just want the students to focus on the shape of the
moon and the pattern that occurs, they will learn the names at a later time. The students will then
be tasked with watching the moon every night for the next few weeks and drawing a picture on the
chart with the proper dates on it. Once they collect their data the students will be given the choice
of making an audio explaining what they observed during this time and what patterned occurred or
doing the same thing using their images for a video. I will then use both the students’ charts and
their audio/video products to analyze what they learned during this lesson. I will provide the
students with feedback by giving them written comments on their charts about their images and the
product they created. We will end the lesson by having the students present their product to the
class.
Managing student learning:
I believe this lesson with impact the students’ engagement to learn in a positive way. This lesson is
designed to give the students a chance to be creative as well as giving them the opportunity to have
a choice in activity. Since the carts will have to be made at home I will be sure to check daily if
students are completing it each night. For the products being created they will have about 40 mins
of class time to complete once their charts are finished. I will be monitoring the class during this time
to ensure they stay on task. I also will be demonstrating how to use each tool before allowing the
students to try it on their own to lessen the amount of time spent on students not knowing how to
use the tools.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
Using the podcast allows students who need audio or struggle with reading the opportunity to listen
to the information being provided and can rewind or listen multiple times if need be. I also provided
a transcript alongside the podcast link to give students with hearing disabilities the option to read
the information as well. And giving my students the choice to pick a video or audio product allows
them to choose the best tool that caters to them the most. It also boosts student engagement by
giving them creative freedom.
Reflection: I think these activities will have a positive impact on student learning. They will get the
opportunity to master a new skill using technology and they have the opportunity to be as creative
as they want with their products. I look forward to seeing what great audio and video products the
students’ will create. This gives them look forward to seeing what great audio and video products
the students’ will create. This gives them the opportunity to express themselves while also
demonstrating what they have learned in a new fun way.
