THE THING THE BOARD GAME

Ares Games has announced that the board game adaptation of John Carpenter’s film will
be available at retail from April 2022. The game was originally created and produced by
Pendragon Games Studios. Based on the 1982 movie, the 1-8 player game is, as you’d
expect, one of hidden roles. One player infected as ‘the thing’ will attempt to infect others and
prevent survivors from escaping – so for those who are still human it’s a case of not knowing
who to trust. If the humans can work together and detect the thing, there’s a chance of
survival. At retail launch the Norwegian Outpost expansion will be available, as well as various
sets of miniatures.

10 SURVIVAL
BOARD GAMES
For solo and cooperative games, there’s nothing more motivating that survival.
It’s a simple desire that helps you makes choices on the board and around the
table. It encourages thematic and dramatic choices, and when your group is
defeated, it’ll only make you stronger next time. With all that going for it, here’s our
favourite survival games…
Words by Christopher John Eggett

MAXIMUM APOCALYPSE
3 The tile-exploring end-of-the-world game that is, as the designer Mike Gnade says,
“the most apocalypse you can have at once.” Not only is it the end of the world then,
it’s all of them. Players explore face down tiles, one at a time, balancing the threat
of pushing too far ahead with the danger of staying still. The core of the game is not
having your deck discarded away (as if that happens, you’re done) by the aliens and monsters you’ll
run into on your adventures. Excellent solo and cooperative, it’s got that classic ‘we’ll only make it if we
work together’ feel to it.

ZOMBICIDE
4 While not every survival game needs zombies, nearly every zombie game is about survival.
In this CMON classic (in any of its flavours, including the upcoming Marvel and recently
released Night of the Living Dead) you’ll be playing as a group survivors (so far anyway) with
a handful of powers and a chance of making it out of the scenario alive if you work together.
The general rule is there will always be more zombies than there are bullets, and you’ll
need to move around the modular-tiled city in the most efficient way to end up out-thinking
the brainless corpses shuffling after you. A classic brains-splattering experience.

DARK SOULS: THE ROLEPL AYING GAME

With the very real and chilling threat of becoming

an NPC hanging over the player’s heads, we move on
to another GM controlled character, those of bosses.
The game series is known for its intense and dramatic
boss battles – it’s one of the main gating mechanics
– here they take on a ferocious aspect of being
something of an avatar for the GM.
“Bosses are nasty,” says August, “they get the
bloodied ability, which means when they hit 50%
hit points, they get new abilities. Most of these
are additional actions and cool stuff they can
do. A couple of them are negative for the boss,
but mostly they get stronger and they get new
ways of altering and alternating their attack
powers.”
“They also get to spend Position like
players do,” says August, “Position can be
spent to change a dice roll, which means
that even dice luck might not save you. While
you might want to go all in and wear them down
quickly, thinking the boss has rolled a one – Yhorm
the Giant might easily turn that one into a 20.”
Boss battles then are about hoarding position until
the time is right, it’s a real confrontation with the
GM, something that August addresses in the GMing
section of the book, “it’s a difficult balance, I can’t
pretend it’s not.” On the plus side, there doesn’t have
to be fog gates in front of them unless you want
there to be “I decided to leave fog gates out. They’re
the kind of feature which is fine in a video game,
but abolishes player agency at the tabletop in a
way that I think players bridle against. That being
said, there’s absolutely nothing stopping a GM
bringing them in.” This latter comment suggests
a world where the bosses from the game aren’t
waiting for you – they may instead roam more
freely through whatever versions of the popular
locations you create for your players. The idea
of the Old Demon King attempting to make

ZOHN AHL
ohn Ahl is typical of many stick-dice race

Z games played by first-nation Americans.

Stick dice are sticks split down the middle
to produce a flat and a rounded side, the
flat side often decorated and coloured.
Three or more may be cast on the ground and the
binary number so produced dictates how fast a player’s
token advances along the trick from start to home. N
sticks can yield n+1 different results.
This race game of the plains Indians was first
described by American ethnologist Stewart Culin in
Games of the North American Indians (1907). Culin
quotes a first-hand but somewhat garbled description
by one Col. H L Scott of a game he calls Zohn Ahl (zohn
= creek ; ahl = wood), or the Ahl game. It was played by
women and children, never men.
The ‘board’, whether a cloth or marks or objects on
the ground, is a circular track of 40 spaces. The south
and north points are called creeks, east and west ‘dry
branches’. Each of two players or teams, sitting on
opposite sides, starts with four counters, places their
token at the south creek and moves it around the track, TOP LEFT: Zohn Ahl layout

China 1899. A populist movement secretly supported

by the Empress Dowager has risen up to expel all
foreigners from Chinese soil. Called the Yihequan
(Fists of Harmony and Justice) but “Boxers” by
foreigners because their members practiced martial
arts, they attacked both foreign residents of China
and Chinese who had converted to Christianity.

The uprising culminated in the siege of Peking

(Beijing) with the small forces of the foreign Legations
surrounded and besieged. A relief force was quickly
cobbled together by the Eight Nation Alliance made
up of Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, Austo-
Hungary, Italy, and the United States. After brutal
fighting the Legation Quarter was liberated in August
1900.

This hard plastic box set allows you to build up to

30 warriors with options to create the famed Kansu

be used for other periods like the Opium Wars, the
Taiping Rebellion, the First Sino-Japanese War, and
into the 20th century.
