ME - SEMESTER– III • EXAMINATION – SUMEER 2018

Subject Code: 2731105 Date: 01/05/2018

Subject Name: DESIGN OF HEAT EXCHANGER
Time: 02:30 PM TO 05:00 PM Total Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.
4. Heat Exchanger Data book is permitted.

Q.1 (a) Discuss the Recuperative and Regenerative type of Heat Exchangers along 07
with their specific applications.
(b) According to constructional features classify heat exchange equipments. 07
Q.2 (a) What is fouling? Explain types and mechanisms of fouling. 07
(b) A counter flow, concentric tube heat exchanger is used to cool the lubricating 07
oil for a large industrial gas turbine engine. The flow rate of cooling water
through the inner tube (Di =25 mm) is 0.2 kg/s, while the flow rate of oil
through the outer annulus (Do=45 mm) is 0.1 kg/s. The oil and water enter at
temperatures of 100 and 30⁰C, respectively. How long must the tube be made
if the outlet temperature of the oil is to be 60⁰C?
OR
(b) Hot exhaust gases, which enter a finned-tube, cross-flow heat exchanger at 300 07
⁰C and leave at 100⁰C, are used to heat pressurized water at a flow rate of 1
kg/s from 35 to 125⁰C. The Overall heat transfer coefficient based on the gas-
side surface area is U = 100 W/m2.K. Determine the required gas-side surface
area using the NTU method.
Q.3 (a) Explain the basic steps of thermal and hydraulic design of inner tube and annulus 07
for double pipe heat exchanger.
(b) Discuss Bell-Delaware method taking into account the effect of various leakage 07
and bypass steams to evaluate shell side heat transfer co-efficient.
OR
Q.3 (a) Explain the general design consideration of shell and tube heat exchanger design. 07
(b) Water at a flow rate of 5,000 kg/h will be heated from 20°C to 35°C by hot 07
water at 140°C. A 15°C hot water temperature drop is allowed. A length of 3.5
m hairpins of 3 in. (ID = 0.0779 m) by 2 in. (ID = 0.0525 m, OD = 0.0603 m)
counter flow double-pipe heat exchangers with annuli and pipes, each
connected in series, will be used. Hot water flows through the inner tube.
Calculate the number of hairpins. Use Dittus–Boelter correlation, Nu =

Q.4 (a) Draw and explain various shell designs suggested by the “TEMA standard” for the 07
shell and tube heat exchanger?

1
(b) Distilled water with a flow rate of 50 kg/s enters a baffled shell-and tube heat 07
exchanger at 32°C and leaves at 25°C. Heat will be transferred to 150 kg/s of
raw water coming from a supply at 20°C. A single shell and single tube pass
is preferable. The tube diameter is 3/4” (19 mm OD with 16 mm ID) and
tubes are laid out on a 1 in. square pitch. Use the baffle spacing of 0.5 m. A
maximum length of the heat exchanger of 8 m is required because of space
limitations. The tube material is 0.5 Cr-alloy (k=42.3 W/m.K). Calculate
shell side heat transfer coefficient only.
OR
Q.4 (a) What is impingement plate? How does it affect the number of tube count? 07
Draw the four commonly used pitch lay-out patterns.
(b) Explain a procedure for sizing a Compact Heat Exchanger 07
Q.5 (a) Classify condensers on the basis of the cooling medium used. Explain water 07
cooled condenser in detail.
(b) Explain the operation of a plate heat exchanger? What are its applications? 07
OR
Q.5 (a) Give classification of evaporator in detail? How they are different than other heat 07
exchanger?
(b) What is basic concepts and step involved in Pinch Technology? 07
