The necessity for a global agreement on plastic waste

Plastic waste-related marine pollution is a global environmental issue that is a concern

by nations, international organizations, scientists, and people worldwide.

It is estimated that around 8 million tons of plastic waste are released into the sea each
year, with Vietnam contributing between 0.28 and 0.73 million tons, ranking 4th in
the world (after China, Indonesia, and the Philippines).

In 2017, 127 nations, including Vietnam, passed a United Nations Environment

Assembly Resolution on plastic waste and ocean plastic, which included the creation
of an Interim Working Group to research measures to reduce marine plastic waste.

In 2021, the Interim Working Group proposed to The UN Environment Assembly to

consider developing an international agreement on plastic waste and ocean
microplastics.

In August 2021, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1407/QD TTg approving the
Project "Vietnam proactively prepares and participates in the development of a Global
Agreement on ocean plastic pollution"

In 2022, The 5th United Nations Environment Council adopted a resolution to

establish an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on a Global Agreement on
Plastic Waste.
