0 Tools for Communication and Collaboration

Lesson Idea Name: Features of the USA

Grade Level/Content Area: 4th Science

Content Standard Addressed: S4P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the
nature of light and how light interacts with objects.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
1.3 Knowledge Constructor- able to do by the end of this lesson: Students
Students critically curate a variety of resources should be able to communicate how the nature
using digital tools to construct knowledge, of light changes when it comes in contact with an
produce creative artifacts and make meaningful object
learning experiences for themselves and others.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?

Students will learn that natural light changes when it comes in contact with an object. They will learn to
describe the path light travels on and how it can be reflected.

Students will get to explore the classroom and find objects to put in front of the light and discover
what happens when you find different sized objects.
How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by
teacher direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

X Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will be given items to explore light paths within small groups. They will be given a flashlight
and a mirror to start their thinking. They will use these tools to see how the light is reflected and
how an object can interfere with light. They will be recording their observations on Padlet as they

go. They will then have the opportunity to go around the classroom and discover how light reacts
with all different shapes and sizes of light. Allowing the kids to work in groups and find their own
objects will allow them to stay engaged because they get to do things at their own pace. To access
prior knowledge before we start, we will have a class discussion and allow the students to predict
what will happen. Students will be assessed by having to write their observations down and by
taking a Kahoot at the end to see what they learned. The lesson will be concluded by allowing the
students to share their observations with the class that they uploaded on Padlet.
Managing student learning: Will the tool(s) used for this lesson cause a shift in the behavior of
students where they move from passive to active social learners? How?
Students will be active learners because they will be working with each other to see the different
outcomes and then work together to write down their observations of what they see going on. At
the end they will also have a chance to share all the cool things they discovered which allows them
to be present and talk to the class about the things they learned.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
This lesson represents multiple means of engagement and multiple means of representation.  This
lesson planned is designed for kids to just have fun and explore. It accommodates all learners
because there is observing involved along with collaborating, exploring, discovering, and most
importantly the fact of having fun getting to mess with and explore new things.
Reflective Practice:
Using this tool for the lesson I think helps students so much because it allows for them to
communicate and collaborate within a group. It allows them to watch a couple videos and then
getting to do the activity themselves and then writing about all of their observations. Students then
get to share everything they learned and observed at the end to the class. I look forward to seeing
the kids explore on their own. They will get to go around the classroom and discover things on their
own.
