Definitions of some terms used in Tourism

Tourism refers to the movement of persons from their permanent place of residence to a temporary one
for at least twenty-four hours but not for more than a year. The purpose includes visits to relatives, holiday,
recreation, health, sports, business and attending meetings/conferences.

A Tourist is described as any one travelling for such purposes as recreation, holiday, health, and sport,
visiting relative, business or as delegate at a conference.

A Visitor is a person who visits a country for any reason but stays for less than twenty four hours. This
person is not considered to be a tourist.

The Tourism industry is the range of organized activities which have been developed to satisfy the needs
of the tourist.

The Tourism sector refers to that part of the country’s economy which is directly or indirectly affected
by the tourism industry.

A Tourism product is anything that attracts tourists to a particular destination. For example,
accommodation, transportation, dining and entertainment as well as attraction and tours.

Domestic • someone who travels but within the borders


tourist of the country within which he lives.

• someone who confines his travel to within


Regional tourist
the regional borders.

International • someone who travels outside the Regional


tourist borders of his country.

Reasons for Tourism Development

Tourism has experienced a rapid development in the Caribbean because of the following reasons:

- the desire of people in the temperate climates to escape the winter in their countries,
- the tremendous amount of foreign currency generated by tourism, encourages activities
both by governments and private sectors to develop the industry,
- the potential for employment generation,
- opportunities by governments to attract investors,
- opportunities for the development of the infrastructure of the country,
- the proximity of the Caribbean to North America,
- the year round tropical climate of the Caribbean with its blue sea and white sandy beaches
and
- the development of fast and reliable air and sea transport systems.

Factors which influence Tourism

Accessibility

Tourists travel from their places of residence to a tourist destination by various means of transport,
for example bicycle, by foot, motor cycle, yacht, aeroplane, cruise ships, motor bus, etc. Hence,
all tourist centers must be easily accessible by various modes of transportation like roads, railways,
air and water.

Accessibility in its entirety

Attractions

These may be site attractions e.g. climate, scenic, historical or event attractions e.g. exhibitions,
sporting events. Both of these can attract the tourists.
