I. Importance of Instructional Materials in Teaching

Instructional Materials are essential tools in learning every subject in a school


curriculum. They allow the students to interact with words, symbols and ideas in way
that develop learners abilities in reading, listening, solving, viewing ,thinking, speaking ,
writing , using media and technology. It also allows students to have practical
experiences which help them to develop skills and concepts and to work in a variety
works.

II. Development of Instructional Materials

When developing the instructional materials, it should be high-quality,


research-based instructional and assessment materials for students that
enhance knowledge, thinking skills, and problem-solving abilities of all
students , as well as incorporate recent advances in disciplinary content and
research on teaching.

III. Specific Types of Materials

A. Materials for Teaching of Vocabulary

1. Osmo Words for Grades 1-8

This is a puzzle game for ages 6-10. Players may guess and spell out the
hidden words by tossing down the letter tiles. A related picture gives the
clue. Osmo Words includes close to a thousand spelling challenges, spill into 4
seasonal themes.

2. Spelling Bee or Spelling Bee Word Quiz for Grades 4-12

This is a quiz or a spelling contest in which the contestant are eliminated as soon
as they misspell a word.

3. Wordscapes for Grades 6-12

It is a word puzzle that the purpose is to create words from random letters
to fill the crossword.

4. Word Map

It is a visual organizer that promotes vocabulary development. Using the


graphic organizer, students think about terms or concepts in several ways.
Most of the word map organizer engage students in developing a definition,
synonyms, antonyms, and a picture for a given vocabulary word or concept.

5. Word Web

Word web is likely most as word map; it also promotes active learning and
helps students develop higher-order thinking skills. It also support
understanding by comparing and contrasting words and providing examples of
words usage in context. This is a strategy for learners acquire and use
academic and domain specific words and phrases.

6. Scavenger Hunt

This is a game, typically played in an extensive outdoor area in which


participants have to collect a number of miscellaneous objects. Scavenger
hunt has a prepared organizer with list of defining specific items, which the
participants seek to gather or complete all the items n the list, usually
without purchasing them. Usually, participants work in small team, although
the rules may allow individuals to participate.

7. Crossword

It is a word puzzle that usually takes the form of square or rectangular grid
white-and black-shaded squares. The goals is to fill the white squares with
letters, forming words or phrases by solving clues, which leads to the answer.

8. Board Games

This game is typically uses pieces- moved or placed on a pre-marked board


and often include elements of table, card, role-playing and miniature games as
well. Most feature of this game is between two or more players.

9. Bingo Cards

This is playing cards that designed to facilitate the game of Bingo in its
various forms around the world. A game of chance in which each player
matches number printed in different arranges on the cars.

10. Pictionary or Newspaper Search

It is a super simple game that only requires pen, paper, and the board game.
And also, Pictionary provides you with the game board, a timer, two dice and
cards with words on them. The aim of Pictionary is to guess what the drawer,
who is drawing words from the list of cards.

11. Riddles

A riddle is a statement, question or phrase having a double or veiled meaning,


put forth as a puzzle to be solved.
12. Words Alive

Words Alive create empowering programs that inspire the life-long learners
through reading.

13. Words Sorts

A word sorts is a developmental word study activity espoused by the words


their way curriculum. The activity focuses on student’s attention on critical
features of words, namely sound, pattern, and meaning.

14. Dictogloss

Dictogloss is a language teaching technique that is used to teach grammatical


structures, in which students from small groups and summarize a target-
language text.

15. Mind Maps

A mind maps is a diagram used to visually organize information in a hierarchy,


showing relationship among pieces of the whole. It is often created around a
single concept, drawn as an image in the center of a blank page, to which
associated representation of ideas such as images, words and parts of words
are added.

B.

1. The definition of Grammar.

A whole system or structured of a language or a languages in general, it


usually taken consisting of syntax, morphology and sometimes also phonology
and semantics. It also a set of rule that govern in a certain language.
2. Why is it important to study grammar?

Studying grammar is very important because it is the language that makes it


possible for us to talk about language an communicate to other people.
Learning grammar is the key in speaking language fluency and confidently.
Knowing grammar could avoid errors.
3. Documentaries, news reports, movies, telephone conversation

Documentaries it is the representation of actual events and people. The


main emphasis of documentaries is to educated and/or persuading its
viewers of some point.

New Reports it is reporting a recent events like politics, accidents, social


gatherings and etc.

Movies it is a story or event recorded by a camera as set of moving images


and shown in a theatre or on television, a motion picture

Telephone Conversation it is a conversation over the telephone and a


conversation that uses speech for informal exchange of views or ideas or
information etc.

4. Signages and symbols

It is a design or use of sign and symbols to communicate a message. A


symbol is a form of a sign that may convey deep meaning.

5. Street Sign

This is a sign that erected in street to give instructions or provide


information to road users. This is necessary because it gives direction,
instructions and warnings that would be helpful for everybody.
6. Posters

It is usually a large printed sheet that often contains pictures and it is


posted in public to promote something.

7. Brochures, comics, directories, greeting cards , invitation cards,


journals, magazines, restaurant menus, recipes, notices, bulletin boards
product label

Brochure is an informative paper document that can be folded into a


template, pamphlet, or leaflet.

Comic is a medium used to express ideas with, images, often combine with
text or other visual information. It typically takes the form of a sequence
of panels of images. This textual devices uses as speech balloons, captions,
and onomatopoeia can indicate dialogue, narration, sound effects, or other
information.

Directory a book listing individuals or organizations alphabetically or


thematically with details such as names, addresses and phone numbers.

Greeting Cards it is a piece of card usually illustration or photo, or made of


high quality of paper or any paper featuring an expression f friendship or
other sentiment.
Journals it is a newspaper or magazine that deals with a particular subject
or professional activity.

Magazines are a periodical containing articles and illustration typically


covering a particular subject or area of interest.

Restaurant Menus are the list of food and beverages offered to customer
and prices. It also presents a list of option from which customers can
choose.

Recipes it is a list of instruction for preparing a particular dish, including a


list of the ingredients required.

Notices it is a notifications or warning of something, especially to allow


preparations to be made.

Bulletin Boards Product Labels are labels or bulletin which aiming to inform
and persuade others about specific products.

D. Material for Enhancing Speaking

1. Podcast

It is a program made available in digital format for download over the


internet. This is digital audio or video files that a user can download to
a user can download to personal device to listen at a time of their
choosing.
2. Podcast or audio content using any audio recording device (read a
poem/short story/share anecdote(explain), talk about your favourite
song ( explain why you like it)

Song: ANGEL BABY

This song really hit me a big time, it shows how you can freely express
what you feel and who you love without minding what others will say. The
song is about bisexual individuals, who fall in love with each other. They
express their feeling; they strongly uplift my feelings that in love, there is
no gender, age and any hinder things that might collapse the bond between
those two people. Some other may think is so gross to fall in love with your
same sex but think, everybody have the right to who they fall in love with,
it is their feelings and they are the one who is responsible to it.

It is a diagram that depicts suggested relationship between concepts.


Concept maps may be used by everyone to organize and structure

4. DRTA-Directed Reading- Thinking Activity

DRTA is a comprehension strategy that guides students in asking questions


about a text, making predictions, and then reading to confirm or refute their
predictions

5. Exist Slips

These are written student’s responses to question teacher pose at the end
of the end of a class or lesson. These quick, informal assessments enable
teachers to quickly assess student’s understanding of the materials.

6. First Lines

It is a pre-reading comprehension strategy in which students read at the


beginning sentences from a book and then makes predictions about the book.
This technique helps students focus their attention on what they can tell
from the first lines of a story, play, poem, or other text.
7. Inquiry Chart (I-Chart)

The inquiry chart is a graphic organizer that allows students to gather


information about the topic from several sources. Teachers design I-chart
around several questions about the topic. Students read or listen to several
sources on the topic and record answers to the posed question within the I-
chart.

8. Listen- Read – Discuss ( LRD)

The strategy that helps students comprehends text. Before reading,


students listen to a short lecture delivered by the teacher. The students
then read a text. After reading, there is a large group discussion or a
student engages in a small group discussion about the topic.

9. Paragraph Shrinking

It is an activity developed as part of the Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies


(PALS). The paragraph shrinking allows each student to takes turns reading,
pausing and summarizing the main points of each paragraph. Students
provide each other with feedback as a way to monitor comprehension.

10. Question the Author (QtA)

It is a question answering and generating strategy that improves


comprehension by helping students pose question while reading a given text,
helping to solidify their knowledge and challenge their understanding. QtA is
used during reading.

IV. My Impression of ELT 208

How can ELT 208 course help improve my teaching skills in English?

As an English Major students, ELT 208 really help me to improve my


teaching skills in English in a way that, it imparted me a lot of important
knowledge like on how I could develop learning materials , how to make
correct learning materials that could really help me as I became a future
educator , someday. Those materials indulge me to improve my way on
speaking and learning English. I also learned the definition of grammar and
how could I improved my grammar. It offers a lot of materials that
