2. HAZARDSINDENTIFICATION

FIRE HAZARD: Contact with water, moist air, steam, acid, will
liberate extremely flammable gas (acetylene). The heat
generated can lead to ignition of the gas. ln contact with water
and moisture irritating calcium hydroxide is formed.
HEALTH RISK: Risk of serious damage to eyes. lrritating to
respiratory system and skin.
ENVIRONMENTAL RISK: The product is not classified as
environmentally hazardous according to criteria in current
legislation.
The product may cause elevation of pH. (Calcium Hydroxide).

4. FIRSTAID MEASURES

lnhalation Fresh air. lf respiratory problems, artificial respirationloxygen.


Rinse nose and mouth with water.
lngestion lmmediately give a couple of glasses of water or milk,
provided the victim is fully conscious. Do not induce vomiting.
Contact physician.
Skin Remove contaminatedclothing. Wash skin thoroughly with
soap and water. Get medical attention if any discomfort
continues.
Eyes lmmediately flush with plenty of water for up to 15 minutes.
Remove any contact lenses and open eyes wide apart.

5. FIRE.FIGHTINGMEASURES

Extinguishing media Do not use water as an extinguisher. Fire can be extinguished


using: Dry chemicals. Dry chemicals, sand, dolomite etc.
Special fire fighting procedures Do not use water on this product. lf not necessary do not
extinguish burning gas. Be aware of risk of fire re-starting, and
risk of explosion.
Specific hazards Contact with water liberates flammable gas. Water used for
fire extinguishing, which has been in contact with the product,
may cause irritation.
Hazardous combustion products Fire creates: lrritant gases, fumes, smoke.
Protective measures ln fire Firefighters exposed to combustion gases/decomposition
products should use a respiratory protective device.

6. ACCIDENTAL RETEASE MEASURES

Personal protection Avoid direct contact with the product. Also refer to handling in
section 7 as wellas personal protective equipment in section 8.
Environmental protection Prevent release into drains and water courses.
Spillcleanup methods Sweep up and place into an appropriate container (metal). Let
stand uncovered in a wellventilated dry area. Containers with
collected spillage must be properly labeled with correct
contents and hazard symbol. Wear necessary protective
equipment. Avoid contact with water. Avoid generation and
spreading of dust- For waste disposal, see section 13-
7. HANDLINGANDSTORAGE

Usage precautions Large quantities handled and stored in an inert atmosphere


(100 L). Prevent contact with water and moist air. Container
must be kept tightly closed. Provide good ventilation.
Avoid handling which leads to dust formation. Avoid direct
contact with the product if possible.
Storage precautions Store at moderate temperatures in dry, well-ventilated area.
Keep in original container. Keep containers tightly closed.

Avoid contact with water. Flammable gas is generated in
contact with water. Avoid handling which leads to dust
formation. Avoid contact with acids and oxidizing substances.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

lnhalation Dust irritates the respiratory system, and may cause coughing
and difficulties in breathing. May cause damage to mucous
membranes in nose, throat, lungs and bronchial system.
lngestion lngestion may cause severe irritation of the mouth, the
oesophagus and the gastrointestinal tract. May have a
corrosive effect on the digestive canal.
Skin Dust has an irritating effect on moist skin. Prolonged or
repeated exposure may cause severe irritation. Prolonged
contact may cause corrosion.
Eyes Risk of serious damage to eye. Dust in the eyes causes risk or
permanent eye damage. lmmediate first aid is necessary.
Health warnings According to the manufacturer the product does not contain
any CMR substances.

13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

GeneraUcleaning Reuse if possible. Discarded product (incl. Contaminated


packaging) and related waste may constitute dangerous waste
in accordance with the Waste Ordinance. Contact an approved
waste disposal company for disposal instructions. The
packaging should be collected for reuse. Let stand outdoors.
Let Calcium carbide slowly react with moisture in the air to
calcium hydroxide. Do not add water. Acetylene and calcium
hydroxide is formed. Calcium hydroxide to destruction.
Disposalmethods Collect in marked containers and deliver to approved depot.
Contact specialist disposal companies.
Waste class Allocation of EWC code to be based on the source generating
the waste. Proposed EWC code: 10 08 wastes from other non-
ferrous thermal metallurgy 10 08 10* dross and skimmings
that are flammable or emit, upon contact with water,
flammable gases in dangerous quantities.
