3 Practice Problems
Complete the following problems in your notebook, then upload a photo of
your work to Canvas.

Included are the formulas that we will be using! *Remember you may need
to manipulate the equation! :)
1. What is the final velocity of a motorcycle that accelerates at a rate of 3.5 m/s² for 9
seconds from an initial velocity of 20 m/s?

2. What is Karen’s average velocity when she runs from her house to the store down the
street? The store is 52 meters from her house, and it takes her 7.6 seconds to run from
her house to the store. (Round answer to the tenths place)

3. How far can a cyclist travel in 2.5 h along a straight road if her average velocity is 18
km/h?

4. An automobile is moving to the right along a straight highway, then the driver puts on the
brakes. If the initial velocity (when the driver hits the brakes) is 17 m/s, and it takes 4.5 s
to slow down to 8 m/s, what was the car’s average acceleration?

5. An athlete at track practice wants to measure his average velocity. His coach has
marked the distances on the ground. His starting position is at 30.5 m, and in 3
seconds, he reaches the 50 m mark. What is his average velocity?

6. You are designing an airport for small planes. One kind of airplane that might use this
airfield must reach a speed before takeoff of at least 27.8 m/s, and can accelerate at 2
m/s². What minimum length must the runway have? (Round answer to the tenths place)

7. Challenge: A car accelerates along a straight road from rest to 75 km/h in 5 seconds.
What is its average acceleration? (check units before working the problem!)
