Procedure:

Orient:

• Students will learn to recognize that two numbers ranging from 0-10 will be greater than,
less than, or equal to each other.
• Students will learn how to identify less than, greater than, and equal symbols.
• Key Vocabulary:
o Numbers – tells us amount of something; how much we have
o More – bigger, greater amount of something
o Less – smaller amount of something
o Equal – same amount of something

Prerequisites/Review:

• Count forward together 0-10

• Count backward together 10-0
• Write a number 0-10 on white board (not in order)
o On ready set go class shouts out number together
o Continue until numbers 0-10 have all been reviewed
• Erase numbers on board,
o Write in order 0-10, remind that order is from little to big
Introduce:

• Gummy Bear attention grabber.

• Hold up two bags of gummy bears, one in each hand.
o One contains 32 snack size baggies of 20 (640 total) gummy bears, other
contains 64 gummy bears.
• Tell class if work hard they get to split up one of the gallon size bags to eat at end.
• Holding up bags tell class to without talking think about which bag they would like to
divide and eat later.
• Students hold arms out in front and apart like would when singing daddy shark.
• Have shark’s mouth open wide, face direction of bag they want most, pretend to
chomp away at bag.
• Students put hands together, tell them shark now cannot open it’s mouth, it is sealed
tight, point with sealed shark mouth to bag we should not divide up.
• Emphasize that 640 bear bag is a lot more than the 64 bear bag.
• Lower bags to side, take turns holding one up, class shouts more or less depending on
which bag raised, do a few times.
• Do same activity but now shout greater or lesser a few times.
• Name sharks, big mouth hungry shark called Greater Shark and small mouth not
hungry shark called Lesser Shark.
• Students stand - sing and actions to Baby Shark but change words to Greater Shark,
Lesser Shark.
• After song students sit for lesson time.

Teach:

• Whiteboard Activity

o Use popsicle sticks, call first student up, ask what favorite candy is.
o Write number 10 on white board and number 1 on board. Ask if student would
like 10 pieces of that candy or 1 piece. Circle 10 and explain to class the student
wants more; student wants greater amount.
o Repeat with five more students, switching up with favorite toy, animal, money,
etc., use different set of numbers each time, use all numbers 0-10.

• Poster Board Visual

o Poster boards with giant greater than and less than sign.
§ Greater than sign has giant triangular teeth like shark.
o Explain signs are used to tell which number is greater and lesser of two numbers.
o Shark with mouth wide open always hungry, wants most to eat, greater amount.
o Shark with mouth closed always full so wants the least to eat, lesser amount.
o Refer to poster board visual student group sheet.
o First group called up, divide with 1 student standing on one side, other 3 standing
on the other side.
o Ask class which side has greater amount of students.
o Standing in middle of groups use greater than sign with shark teeth to show
greater than group. Switch signs and show the less than sign without teeth.
o Repeat with all the other groups, different size groups.

• Equal Sign Visual

o Use popsicle sticks to call up 6 students, divide three on each side.

o Ask students to point to which side has more, which side has less.
o Explain same amount so need another sign, another shark.
o Pull out equal poster board, hold between two groups.
o Bring new group of students up for a couple more rounds to demonstrate equal.
o Students put both arms straight out in front of them with thumbs looking up at
ceiling to make equal shark.
o Students sing and dance to one round of Equal Shark with arms straight out.

Check for Understanding:

• Have students remain standing. Ask them to show Greater Shark with their arms, show
Lesser Shark with arms, and show Equal Shark with arms.
• Hold up two whiteboards, each one has different number on it. Students make Greater
Shark arms facing greater number.
• Repeat with two new whiteboards, different numbers, students make Lesser Shark arms
facing lesser number.
• Repeat with two new whiteboards, different numbers, students make Greater Shark arms
facing greater number.
• Repeat with two new whiteboards, different numbers, students make Lesser Shark arms
facing lesser number.
• On last two whiteboards have same number written.
o Tell students you are not going to tell them which shark to hold up this time and
that they have to figure it out.
o Students should hold up Equal Shark arms.
o Repeat until majority understand equal.

Practice, Independent and Group

• Rotating Stations, 4 stations, 8 students each

• Explain 4 stations
• Remind students if question entire group stays at station with hands raised or can send
group messenger over to ask me the group question.

• Station 1: Individual Collage

o Each student will make a greater than sign collage by gluing candy corns to their
greater than symbol to make a Greater Shark.
• Station 2: Think/Pair/Share

o Students find their name on red and blue sheets posted at station.
o Students will get in pairs. Group Red 1 pair with Group Blue 1, Group Red 2 pair
with Group Blue 2, etc.
o Pairs remove the contents out of their bags, group their items, work together to
decide which group of items is greater, which group is lesser.
o Take two pipe cleaners to make symbol between the two groups of items.
o Students put contents back in bags, rotate bags until all four sets completed.

• Station 3: Individual Worksheet - Numbers and symbols activity with die

o Each problem has one side with a number, that number is represented with
pictures(s), other side of problem left blank to fill in.
o Get number for blank side of problem by rolling 10- sided die.
o Number rolled is added to blank spot on worksheet.
o Number added also represented by student drawing that many Xs or Os or shapes.
o Middle column has three symbol choices to pick from (greater than, less than, or
equal to), student will circle symbol.
o Students may talk to each other to ask questions.
o Turn papers into basket at station.

• Station 4: Group Work, Students are the teachers

o Two students at time will take turns being teachers.

o Teachers will take one tile out of container A, one tile out of container B, show to
rest of student group.
o Students write the two numbers on their white boards individually, add symbol
between two numbers.
o Student group compares and discusses answers, talks about and explains why they
decided on answers.
o While students writing, comparing, and discussing the teachers find answer on
simple answer key provided.
o Teachers check student boards to see if correct, students check teachers’ answer
to see if correct.
o Erase boards, two new teachers comes to front, previous teachers move to become
students.

Modifications:

• ELL

o Use Spanish word and English word while teaching for numbers 0-10, greater,
lesser, more, equal and other words able to translate.
o Use hand gestures while speaking.
o Assign to group with the bilingual student so can ask questions.
o Check in with bilingual student to see how ELL is doing.
o Send home paper in Spanish about lesson learned, include website links.

• Learning Disabled – Dyslexia

o Assign to group with helper buddy.

o Assessment worksheet modified with larger print and pictures to represent
number instead of only numbers, symbols already there to circle.
o When numbers are on white boards and smart boards, point and say number out
loud.
o Number line printed on dice worksheet for each problem so only has to circle
instead of write, match the die number with number on line, buddy may help.
o During teacher activity, buddy helps write on whiteboard if wanted.

• ADHD

o Picture checklist of different stations and activities, can see lesson broken down to
smaller chunks.
o Each station completed receives check mark, gets a reward for each station
completed (5 min. free activity choice, treasure box, etc.).
o Assign study buddy who can help remind and keep track of checklist, ask
questions when forget or need to be reminded.

Closure:

• Students gather and stand on their numbered dot in front of smart board.
• Greater shark music game, entire song.
o Baby Shark instrumental plays.
o Set of numbers flash on smart board.
o Greater Shark entire song, arms eat the greater number.
§ Remind if equal numbers, use Equal Shark arms.
• Lesser Shark music game, entire song.
o Baby Shark instrumental plays.
o Set of numbers flash on starboard.
o Lesser Shark entire song, hands together, point to lesser number.
§ Remind if equal numbers, use Equal Shark arms.

• Students return to seats.

• Pass out bags of gummy bears and instruct not to eat.
• Students pull out 10 gummy bears, put on desk, others remain in bag.
• Students count 4 gummy bears, put on left side of desk.
• Students count 6 gummy bears, put on right side of desk.
• On ready set go, make greater than symbol with arms in direction of greatest amount.
• Let students know time to transition to test.
o May eat the 6 greater bear side once other bears in bag and bag in desk.
o Can eat remaining bears at recess or take home for later.

Assessment:

• Teacher observation
• Worksheet check
