To prevent catalytic converter theft, use common sense and follow these tips:

• Park in well-lit areas

Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular

Happy Independence Day!
For the past 46 years, the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular
has lit up the New York City skyline on both the Hudson and East
Rivers. This year several of Macy’s barges floated along the East River
with over 50,000 firework shells, which launched into the night sky
and amazed the spectators. This dazzling display of colorful fireworks
and patriotic music entertained the observers.

Staying Cool to Beat the Summer Heat
While the temperatures are starting to rise, there are several things
that you can do to stay cool. Below is a list of ways to help beat the heat:

Dress cool
Avoid jeans and other fitted clothing and go for breathable garments
made from cotton and linen. T-shirts, sundresses, shorts, and khakis will
keep you comfortable, even on the steamiest days. Skip the pantyhose for
work if you’re permitted, and you can sport longer skirts. Flip flops and
sandals of all styles are the footwear of choice for many New Yorkers, so
summer gives you an excuse to go shoe shopping or order another pair or
two from your favorite online retailer.
Carry water
Water is available at street carts all over the city, in restaurants, and
stores, but if you’re traveling from other areas of the city or to the outer
boroughs, you should always keep a bottle or two of water with you.
Staying hydrated will keep you from feeling sluggish and your skin will
thank you for it later.
Hang out by the water or take a dip
There’s always a breeze by the water, stop by Shirley Chisholm Park to
explore the winding paths and beautiful pier. Additionally, you can become
a member of the Brooklyn Sports Club to take a dip in the indoor pool. You
can also enjoy the various sprinklers throughout Spring Creek Towers
(SCT) parks.
Indulge in cool treats
The familiar jingle of Mr. Softee’s Ice Cream truck and the ring of an ICE
stand are outdoor cool treats you can indulge in while trying to stay cool.
Stop by the Spring Creek Shopping Center to visit Dunkin Donuts for an
ice coffee or City Fresh for a smoothie. You can also make your own cold
treats at home, freezing your favorite juice or lemonade into your ice tray
and then adding toothpicks.

HEALTHY AGING
Many factors influence healthy aging. We may not have total
control over our genetic make up. However, others, like exercise, a
healthy diet, going to the doctor regularly, and taking care of our
mental health are within our reach. Research supported by National
Institute of Aging (NIA) and others has identified actions you can take
to help manage your health, live as independently as possible, and
maintain your quality of life as you age.
While scientists continue to actively research how to slow or
prevent age-related declines in physical health, they have already
discovered multiple ways to improve the chances of maintaining
optimal health later in life. Taking care of your physical health
involves staying active, making healthy food choices, getting enough
sleep, limiting your alcohol intake, and proactively managing your
health care. It should be noted that small changes in each of these
areas can go a long way to support healthy aging.
Taking care of your physical, mental, and cognitive health is also
important for healthy aging. Even making small changes in your daily
life can help you live longer and better. In general, you can support
your physical health by staying active, eating and sleeping well, and
going to the doctor regularly. Take care of your mental health by
interacting with family and friends, trying to stay positive, and
participating in activities you enjoy. Additionally, taking steps to
achieve better physical and mental health may reduce your risk for
Alzheimer’s and related dementias as you age.
Pay attention to your mental health – ongoing sadness, loss of
interest, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, changes in sleep pattern, loss
of appetite, excessive crying, irritability and so on. If you experience

Currently, O’Connor’s first-grade class is the control or “guinea pig” class
to see how well this program rolls out.  However, the Green Bronx Machine
has a curriculum built for multiple grade levels and with the purpose for
all students to access it with intrigue and a new love for growing their own
food. The curriculum is differentiated and touches multiple content areas
(science, math, ELA).
“Our hopes are to let this program flourish to all grade levels and have
ways to access and possibly get more towers in our school to work with a
variety of vegetables,” said O’Connor. 
“The tower itself is an aeroponic system that uses air and water with
nutrients and indoor LED lights to fuel the growth of the plants, mainly
green leafy vegetables or as we teach the students: the colors of the
rainbow,” said O’Connor.
The students have shown an incredible amount of curiosity,
engagement, and love for learning about growing their own food.  The first-
grade students were the “guinea pigs” for this, and Ms. O’Connor was so
excited to take on this opportunity.
O’Connor has personal experience with these Tower Gardens.  O’Connor
and her co-teacher, Susanne Martillotti were floored with how happy and
excited our students were about this project. 
“We started basic with growing vegetables that needed little pollination
since the tower is inside.  The student excitement and content when having

FDA VIII Middle School Students Graduate

Middle is school is often said to be the stepping-

stone to a teenager’s future. It’s the start of a journey
that will lead them toward, perhaps, a specialty high
school and if they work hard enough an Ivy League
University.
At the start of the 2019-2020 academic year, pre-
teens who entered sixth grade only enjoyed about
seven months of normalcy and then they were
quarantined at home, learned remotely and parti-
cipated in blended learning. In their third and final
year, with the implementation of masks and vac-
cinations, they were welcomed back fully in-person.
On June 24th, Frederick Douglass Academy VIII
held it’s first fully in-person graduation ceremony
after three years of enduring the COVID-19 pandemic
outside in the school’s playground. Beneath a tent,
dozens of scholars dressed in burgundy robes
prepared themselves to take the next step in their
education—high school. During the ceremony,
Principal Chantal Grandchamps acknowledged these
obstacles that the students barely on the cusp of their
teenage years overcame. She applauded their
studious efforts and ability to continue to look toward
the future bright eyed and with confidence.
Grandchamps also shared that it has been years of
grief for those who perished during that time and
commended the bravery and perseverance of both the students and
faculty as they fought through it all.
“If there was one word to describe the strength of this group of
scholars, students with the resilience, bravery and courage and
strength you have stolen from starting with us in sixth grade in a
completely different world,” Grandchamps said, adding, “When we
picture someone brave, we think they are fearless. But real courage
comes from feeling afraid and facing the challenges that come our way
anyway.”
This year’s valedictorian was Jaida Crews, and
David Clement was FDA’s Salutatorian. Awards
were distributed for Best Attendance, Most
Improvement, Mayor Adams’ Commencement
Awards, Brooklyn President Perseverance, Triple
C, and more.
“As you begin your next chapter of your life because this is
just the beginning. You have a tomorrow and that next
chapter never forget the strength that you have. And
sometimes when you don’t have the strength to believe
in yourself, those people behind you, they believe in
you and know that you are loved,” Ms. Green, FDA
VIII’s Assistant Principal said, pointing at the family
and friends who sat behind the graduating class.

Nathan’s Famous July 4 Hot Dog Eating Contest

Nathan’s Famous July 4th Hot Dog Eating Contest returned to Surf
and Stillwell Avenues, just outside of the flagship restaurant after two
years of being forced to relocate due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thousands of revelers lined the streets of Coney Island in hopes of
catching a glimpse of the contest, especially World Campion, Joey
Chestnut from Indianapolis. Last year, Chestnut devoured 73 hot
dogs; however, this year the champ regained his title and consumed 63
hot dogs within 10 minutes.
Chestnut shared that he became winded while competing in the
blistering heat, which he attributes to his limited ability to perform
cardio workout due to his torn tendon on his right leg. In addition to
the physical setbacks, there was an animal rights activist who pushed

and Miki Sudo.

Allegedly, the protester is a member of the Direct Action Everywhere
group, who showcased a sign stating, “Expose Smithfield Deathstar,”
which points at a Virginia pig farm for claims of animal abuse. The
champ wrestled the protester out of the way and says that this
distraction did not affect his overall performance.
Sixteen men were competing in the competition, with Geoffrey Esper
coming in second place with 47. 5 hot dogs eaten.
“I was exhausted during the contest. I got a little bit winded,”
Chestnut said. “The [fans] were pushing me hard. They wanted to see
a record and for some reason everybody had low numbers today. It’s
just some years it’s like that.”
Chestnut is a 15-time Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest
winner, and he says it feels great to retain the title.
“It feels great to win again, 15 times. It’s awesome. There was a point
that I wasn’t sure I could compete, but I started practicing and said I
can stand up. I was able to figure it out,” Chestnut said.
For the women’s competition, there were 12 females including
Michelle Lesco, who hails from Tucson, Arizona, who was last year’s
champ. Former winner, Mikki Sudo from Tampa, Florida returned
from maternity leave with her eye on regaining her title as the first-
place champ. Sudo chomped her way to the top devouring 40 hot dogs.
“I started this as a single person and then I met the love of my life in
competitive eating and now we have a child together and we get to do
all of this as family. I never thought that competitive eating could bring
so much meaning to my life,” Sudo said.
Sudo told the Spring Creek Sun that she will not be entering her son,
Max, in competitive eating when he gets older.
“I think that Max will grow up just thinking his parents are weird and
would want nothing to do with competitive eating, so hopefully he just
becomes an engineer or something,” Sudo said.

are still many food manufacturers
across the world who choose to
enhance the quality and appear-
ance of their baked products by
adding the carcinogenic compound
known as potassium bromate
(KBrO3) to their flour.
Potassium bromate, a “potential
human carcinogen” as deemed by
the International Agency for Re-
search on Cancer, is often used as
an oxidizing agent during the
production of baked goods such as
bread or pizza.
In order for a baked good to
achieve that fluffy, high-risen
appearance and texture, it must be
oxidized first. In the past, dough
would be kneaded repeatedly by a
baker, then left out in the open air
to oxidize naturally; a process that
can take days, even weeks. Potas-
sium bromate shortens this pro-
cess by directly and more potently
strengthening the bonds between
gluten (the constituent parts of any

limit for its use in bromated flour.
As for its use in bread, 75 ppm is
considered the limit for safe human
consumption.

Keep an eye out for “potassium bro-
mate” or “bromated flour” — and if
you see either ingredient, do your-
self a favor and put it back.

In Memory of Natasha O’Sullivan

There are some people who have such a
profound effect on those around them it’s
almost earth shattering. The fire inside them
burns so brightly, others can’t help but be
drawn toward them. The best way to describe
that type of person is simply as a shooting
star—so small but with such a beautiful,
significant impact that those within the
gravitational pull cannot turn away. This best
describes Natasha O’Sullivan, a young woman
who moved so quickly, with a glow akin to a
comet powering through the sky, her friends and family were only
graced with her presence for a brief time before she lit up their lives and
moved on.
Natasha O’Sullivan and her twin sister Erica O’Sullivan burst into
this world at Mount Sinai hospital on February 12, 1988. Together they
lived in the Bronx until the age of five, when they moved to Elmhurst,
Queens attending Ascension Elementary School. While Erica attended
Cathedral High School, Natasha studied at the Mary Louis Academy
(TMLA) in Jamacia, Queens.
The O’Sullivan twins were identical not just in appearance, but in
good nature as well. Natasha exuded an angelic aura, beaming with a
childlike personality, flittering through the world like a pixie. She ignited
every room she walked into with her melodic laugh, warm smile, quick
wit, and killer dance moves. Her selfless love for nurturing children
became her profession as she reached adulthood, holding a position as
head pre-school teacher in Oxbridge Preschool.
Natasha O’Sullivan passed away on July 5, 2022. She leaves behind
her sisters Erica, Rachel, and Katie, brothers Daryl and Bruce, niece
Arya, father Nessan, her boyfriend Stalin, and so many other relatives, Reach out to a friend about

Tribeca Celebrates The Godfather’s 50th Anniversary

refuse,” and “You don’t even think to call me Godfather. Instead, you come
into my house on the day my daughter is to be married, and you ask me
to do murder for money,” are some of the most unforgettable cinematic
quotes all stemming from what is perhaps considered the greatest movie of
all time—The Godfather.
The Tribeca Film Festival commemorated the 50th anniversary of The
Godfather on June 17th with a fully restored screening at the United Palace

Theater, rounding off the festival’s comeback to full-scale and in-person. In
honor of the Academy Award-winning masterpiece is the first of a trilogy
following the Corleone mafia family. This patriarchy is helmed by Don Vito
Corleone (Marlon Brando), who must pass along the torch of his crime
syndicate to his son, Michael (Al Pacino).
In December 2021, the United Palace Theater in Washington Heights
was revamped. First built in the 1930s, the United Palace was the place to
see live music and entertainment but due to the COVID-19 pandemic it
was forced to shutter its doors. Last year, the site reopened in all of its
extravagance, showcasing historic architecture very much similar to some
of the lavish locations in the film The Godfather.
Hundreds upon hundreds of attendees lined the streets to enter the near
sold-out event, which also featured a conversation with Al Pacino prior to
the screening with moderator Michael Hainey (an author and Deputy
Editor of GQ).
Al Pacino is an iconic New Yorker, born in East Harlem and raised in the
South Bronx; he is one of history’s most prolific actors known for his roles
in The Irishman, Devil’s Advocate, Carlito’s Way, Serpico, Heat, Scarface
and more. But before he became a superstar, Pacino was a struggling actor
working as superintendent in a building. During his conversation at
Tribeca, he shared that he once used Band-Aids to stick his actor’s
headshot on his apartment door to help advertise his work.
Pacino says that at first, those responsible for creating The Godfather did
not want him nor Francis Ford Coppola in the film—but as fate would have
it both men ended up becoming involved in the film.
Pacino recalled a conversation with Coppola, in which the famed director
asked him, “You know the book? Well I want you to play Michael,” Pacino
said. “The first thing I thought was I wanted to play Sonny, but I said
okay.”
In addition to earning the role of a lifetime, Pacino said that when he told
his grandmother that he would be in adaptation of the famed book, The
Godfather, she shared that his grandfather was born in Corleone Italy, just
like Don Vito.
As we celebrate the 50th anniversary, it was also announced on July 7th

ANSWER: Osteopenia, also called
low bone density, is a risk factor for
osteoporosis. The risk of developing
a fracture depends on a person’s
age and sex, height and weight, re-
sults of their bone density test and
presence of certain other medical
risk factors, including previous
fracture, use of glucocorticoid drugs
like prednisone, smoking and rheu-
matoid arthritis. Fracture risk is
commonly estimated by the FRAX
tool (www.sheffield.ac.uk/FRAX/).
If the estimated hip fracture risk is
3%, or the combined risk of any
fracture is 20%, then medication
treatment is usually recommended.
Getting your FRAX result is a
critical number to have to help
make an informed decision. You will
need the exact results of your bone
density.
If your risk is not so high that
medication is recommended, there
are many things you can do to help
your bone density. These include
adequate dietary calcium, supple-
mental vitamin D, regular exercise

myths about this career path.
Myth: Home healthcare means only
working with seniors.
Fact: Home health nurses work

wide variety of services, from spe-
cialized personal care for children
with disabilities to management for
those who are dependent on devices
such as ventilators, bi-pap, c-pap,
trachs and apnea monitors.
Myth: Home healthcare only in-
volves working with very sick
people.
Fact: Home healthcare nursing
services offer the full continuum of
care and can include health as-
sessments for blood pressure,
glucose and postoperative recovery,
wound care, IV management, medi-
— especially weight-bearing and
strengthening exercises — and
avoiding smoking and excess alco-
hol. A home evaluation to reduce
fall risk may be of benefit.
If your fracture risk is already
higher than the above threshold,
medication would normally be pre-
scribed in addition to lifestyle treat-
ments. Antiresorptive treatments,
such as alendronate (Fosamax) or
other bisphosphonate drugs, do
increase the risk for jawbone dam-
age, and given what your perio-
dontist has recommended, I would
avoid not only these drugs but also
denosumab (Prolia), which works
similarly by decreasing bone resorp-
tion. Although I am not an expert, I
would consider treatment with a
medicine like teriparatide, which
has been used as a treatment for
people with jaw osteonecrosis. This
medicine works by stimulating bone
growth and has a good safety
record.

Six Things to Know About COVID-19 Vaccines for Children Under 5

(StatePoint) COVID-19 vaccines
are now available for children under
5 years old, and the American
Medical Association (AMA) is urging
parents to get their children vac-
cinated.
“The wait for this moment has
been excruciating for parents who
were ready on day one for their
children to receive a vaccination to
prevent severe COVID,” says Jack
Resneck, Jr., M.D., president of the
AMA. “While there is overwhelming
scientific evidence showing the
COVID-19 vaccines are safe and
effective, we know many parents
and families still have questions.”
Here are six things to know about
pediatric COVID-19 vaccines for
kids under 5:
1. The vaccines are safe: The U.S.
Food and Drug Administration and
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) reviewed all trial
safety data before authorizing and
recommending vaccines for child-
ren under 5. The vast majority of
side effects were mild, including
irritability and crying, sleepiness,
fatigue and loss of appetite.
3. They’re widely available:
Vaccines will be available at pedia-
tricians’ offices, as well as from
primary care physicians. Infor-
mation on locations near you is
available at vaccines.gov.
4. COVID-19 poses a danger to
children: According to the CDC,
COVID-19 is a leading cause of
death among children ages 0-19
vaccines involve more than one
dose. Pfizer’s vaccine is a three-dose
primary series at one-tenth the
dosage of the adult formulation.
The Moderna vaccine primary se-
ries is a two-dose regimen, spaced
four to eight weeks apart, at one-
fourth the dosage of the adult
formulation. Booster shots will
likely be part of the regimen, too,
just as they are for other age
groups.
6. Getting up to date is impor-
tant: Make sure your child is up to
date on all vaccines when they get
the COVID-19 vaccine. Adolescents
and adult immunizations declined
during the pandemic and an esti-
mated 26 million recommended
vaccinations were missed in 2020
as compared to 2019.

JASA Starrett Senior Center offers a wide array of programs for older
adults, from Zumba to paint classes. Each activity engages seniors
mentally and physically, keeping them interacting with others as well as
tapping into their creativity.
The first Wednesday of each month, JASA volunteer Ralfi Viera holds
tie-dye classes at 11 am in the Aspen room, located in the lower level of
the Brooklyn Sports Club (BSC). Using two rectangular tables covered
in plastic, Viera places various colored dyes for the seniors to choose
from, while also providing plastic aprons and gloves (since the dyes are
hard to wash out). The seniors are given rubber bands to tie onto the
white shirts in different shapes, which creates patterns when the dye is

When it’s hot, I barely want to
eat, let alone heat up the house
cooking something. So we’ve been
on a salad kick lately. One
drawback to having salads is the
cost quickly adds up. Here are
some tips to help you save some
green while buying your greens.
Bag the bagged salads. Read the
ingredients for inspiration, then put
it back on the shelf, because they
cost more and go bad quickly. Skip
the convenience if you want to save
a buck. Buy the three pack hearts
of romaine and chop them yourself.
It’s easy and takes mere seconds.
One heart makes two or three nice
salads. Next, add the goodies they
put in the prepared salads yourself.
Leave the lettuce. Even better
than romaine, select heartier
greens like cabbage and kale. They
keep longer, have more flavor, more
health benefits and are usually
cheaper. Bonus, if they start to wilt,
you can saute them.
Save on proteins. While salmon
and steak make lovely salads, use
Vinaigrettes can be as simple as
three parts oil to one part vinegar.
Add flavorings like mustard, herbs
and spices, and experiment to your
heart’s content.
The recipe below is a summer-
time favorite. The dressing doubles
as marinade for chicken. And if you
grill the chicken outdoors, you get
the down-home aroma of smoke
without heating up your home.
HONEY MUSTARD CHICKEN
SALAD
Yield: 4 generous servings
Time: 1 hour plus marinating time
For Marinade/Dressing:
cup honey mustard
3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons whole-grain mustard
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon minced garlic
teaspoon salt
Pinch black pepper
4 chicken breasts or 8 chicken
thighs, boneless skinless
For Salad:
cup bacon, about 4 strips, diced
2 boiled eggs, sliced
6-8 cups romaine lettuce leaves,
chopped
2 cups tomatoes, sliced
1 large cup corn kernels
cup red onion, diced
1. Whisk marinade ingredients
together. Divide in half, reserving
half in the fridge to dress the salad.
Pour the remaining marinade over
the chicken and refrigerate.
Marinate chicken for two hours, or
better, overnight.
2. The chicken can be grilled,
sauteed on the stovetop or oven
baked.
3. To grill, preheat to medium-high
heat and grill for about 7 to 10
minutes on each side or until your
thermometer registers 160 degrees.
4. To saute, heat a pan or skillet
over medium heat with a little oil
and cook in batches, until cooked
through.
5. To bake, preheat oven to 375
degrees and cook for 30 minutes or
until cooked through.
6. While the chicken cooks, saute
the bacon and hard boil the eggs.
7. In preparation for the salad, slice
chicken into strips and prepare the
lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, corn
and onion. Crumble the bacon and
slice the eggs.
8. Whisk 1 tablespoon of water into
the remaining dressing and drizzle
over the salad. It’s potent, so add to
taste. Arrange salad artistically or
just plop it all in a big bowl and
have at it.
One last tip: To keep salad fresh,
crisp and delicious, don’t dress it
until you’re ready to eat. The acid in
dressings breaks down cell walls,
making floppy, sad salad.
The part I enjoy most about a
salad kick is coming up with
different combinations of dressings
and ingredients. I hope this in-
spires you to think outside the bag
for your next salad.

and vintage ceramics, because many
were made by small local potteries
and not marked. Workmen often
moved to another factory but con-
tinued to make the same type of
wares and decoration.
Spatter ware is a pottery decorated

single flower in the center. Price is determined by the condition and the
skill of the decorator.
Conestoga Auction Co. sold a collection of this type of pottery, with many
early examples selling for hundreds of dollars. A plate with a border of
green and blue spatter stripes and a center with two stylized tulips did not
have a maker’s mark and sold for $224.

dated July 9, 1901. It has puffy butterflies. The base has a diamond-

A: Thomas J. Pairpoint founded the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company in
New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1880. The company joined with nearby
glassworks and made glass, lamps and silver-plated pieces. Reverse-
painted glass shades and molded shades known as “puffies” were made
until the 1930s. The company became the Pairpoint Glass Company in
1957. It moved to Sagamore, Massachusetts, in 1970 and now makes
luxury glass items. Look closely at the patent date on your lamp. Are you
