1 CONCRETE WORKS

1.0 OBJECTIVE

1.1 To define the requirements for the supply and execution concrete works for
the constructions of AL-Futtaim Oriana 4 Villas Development’ Phase 1&2-New
Caro Project – New Cairo (Tender Number: CA007P01)

2.0 SCOPE

2.1 Al Futtaim Project - establishing, executing, and handing over of Package


CA007P01 -. Oriana 4 villas development phase 1 and 2 , The scope of work
consists of civil, MEP works , external and internal finishing for 116 units
divided to two types Q and W .
.

3.0 REFERENCE

4.0 PROCEDURE

4.1 The contractor shall obtain approval from consultant for various grades of
concrete as specified in the project specification, the contractor shall arrange for
trial mix at approved concrete batching plant. The contractor shall submit the
results of such trial mixes and obtain approval from consultant.

4.2 The contractor shall obtain approval from consultant for the sources of all
materials used in concrete including the ready mix batching plant by duly
furnishing the valid calibration certificated of the batching plant issued by
approved calibrating agencies and test certificates of all concrete ingredients
form consultant approved independent laboratories.

4.3 Ready mix concrete should conform to ASTM C 94, except for material, testing
and design conform to E.C.P.

4.4 Before concreting, necessary approval for rebar, formwork should be obtained
from consultant engineer. Clearance from electro mechanical shall be obtained.
All the inserts, fixtures are in firmly position.

4.5 Request for Inspection and approval shall be submitted by consultant engineer in
advance clearly mentioning the scope of concreting including the time, date,
grade and quantity of concrete.

4.6 All the equipment necessary for the proposed concrete should be made
available in working condition at site. Proper lighting arrangements should be
made available at concreting location if required.

4.7 Adequate manpower shall be arranged at site for finishing the concrete before it
takes initial setting.

4.8 Ensure that the correct grade and required quantity of concrete is ordered and
the delivery of concrete should not be any time gap which shall lead to cold joints
in the freshly placed concrete.

4.9 consultant approved Independent Testing laboratory should be readily available


at site prior to commencement of concreting to conduct test on concrete. All the
equipment used by the Independent Testing laboratory shall have valid
calibration certificate for each equipment.

4.10 Temperature of concrete should be taken and it shall be within the permissible
limits. If the temperature of concrete exceeds 30°C at the placing point,
Consultant engineer should be informed and create cold joint at the placement if
required.

4.11 Slump test in accordance with BS 5328 should be conducted before placing of
concrete. Tests shall also be conducted when making test cubes and a record
must be kept for all these tests.

4.12 Samples for work cube test shall be taken at the rate of twelve of cubes from
every day pour or each 100 m3 of concrete pour whichever is smaller , from each
sample three cubes shall be tested after seven days , three after 28 days. Test
cubes shall be crushed in presence of Consultant engineer and the results
should be submitted and approved from Consultant , giving the information like
cube specimen mark, date of casting, date of testing, age, dimensions,
compressive strength, weight of the cube etc.

4.13 Concrete shall only be placed on surface ready to receive it. Concrete shall be
placed gently to avoid segregation.

4.14 Concrete shall not be thrown or dropped from a height exceeding 2 m and it shall
be placed in final position.

4.15 Concreting shall be carried out continuously and fresh concrete shall not be
placed against insist concrete, which is more than 30 thirty minutes unless a
construction joint is formed.

4.16 At any case concrete shall not be placed in standing water in the formwork. The
depth of layers and the time between placements of layers can be properly
merged into preceding layer before initial set takes place.

4.17 Concrete shall be thoroughly compacted by vibration during the operation of


placing and thoroughly worked around the reinforcements, embedded fixtures
and the corner of the formwork to form a solid mass free from voids.

4.18 Vibration of the concrete shall not be applied on reinforcement. The duration of
vibration shall be limited to produce satisfactory compaction without causing
segregation.

4.19 On completion of concreting, the site shall be cleaned and any splashes of
concrete shall be removed..

5: PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

A full and detailed description of the roles and responsibilities of all DETAC staff is included
within the Project Quality Plan. For the works as covered by this method statement, the
following personnel have specific duties.

5.1 Technical office Engineer : specific responsibility include :

 Responsible for ensuring that the various submittals are timely


undertaken (materials, workshop drawings, subcontractors issues,
technical issues)

 Responsible for quotations as required (materials, subcontractors).

 Responsible for ensuring RFI’s are timely undertaken on behalf of


DETAC.

 Responsible for the distribution of documents within DETAC site


personnel.

5.2 Site Engineer : specific responsibility include :

 Ensuring that the project is managed in a safe manner and meets the
requirements of the project documentation.

 Ensuring that subcontractors and suppliers achieve the on-site


required standards.

 Shall refer to the QC Department and the HSE Department for advice
and guidance when required.

 Shall ensure that operatives comply with the relevant method


statements.

5.3 HSE Site reprehensive: specific responsibility include :

 Assisting in the production of any health, safety and environmental


documents.

 Monitoring the implementation of health, safety and environmental


requirements.

 Undertaking audits and ensuring that corrective and preventive


actions are taken where required.

 Liaison with the senior site staff on health, safety and environmental
related matters.

5.4 QC Site representative(s) specific responsibility include :

 To ensure that all operatives, team members and appropriate


subcontractors have been briefed as to the content of the method
statement befor the beginning of each activity.

 Carrying out phased inspections as required.

 Preparation of the ITP.

 Ensuring that all required tests are performed and are in compliance
with project specifications.

 Maintaining a record of all QC activities on site.

 Controlling and ensuring all measuring and test equipment on site is


properly calibrated.

 Controlling all non-conforming products or workmanship, and


implementing the required preventive actions.

 Ensuring that corrective and preventive actions are taken when


required.

 Ensuring that the required testing is undertaken by approved


independent laboratories, and that all test results are reviewed.

5.5 Supervisor (s) : specified responsibilities include

 To ensure that all operatives and appropriate subcontractors have


been briefed as to the content of the method statement and the works.
 To adequately control the works as required.
 To ensure the works are undertaken in a safe manner.
 To ensure all operatives are adequately training in their respective
works.
 Reporting any un-safe practices on site to the DETAC site team.

6. Equipment:

7. Materials

 Ready Mix Concrete.

8. Safety:

 Project Safety Plan shall be strictly enforced at all times. All works
shall be regularly monitored to ensure full compliance.

 DETAC resource as appropriate the supervision of the works.

 The barricades are to be inspected on a periodic basis and repaired


as required and provide signage to control traffic.

 All waste materials (rubbish and debris) shall be removed from the
workplace to a suitable area.

 Tools and equipment will be inspected periodically by the Contractor


to ensure that remain in proper working order and certifications is
current.

 Provide additional lighting facility to carryout works in poor daylight.

 All workers have to wear helmets, safety shoes and gloves.

 Establish first aid station and maintain adequate first aid supplies.

 During casting concrete ensure that Stairs, walkways and work areas
to be free of debris, grease and oil, also provide warning tapes and
signs at potential fall hazard areas.

 Scaffolding and ladder frames to be properly secured and braced.

 Ensure proper curing periods and procedures.

 Plan routing of mixers and other equipment.

 Establish proper manner to release formwork after hardened of


concrete.

9. Testing and Inspection:

 Tests are prepared as specified in approved laporatory.

 Samples for work cube test shall be taken at the rate of twelve of
cubes from every day pour or each 100 m3 of concrete pour
whichever is smaller, from each sample three cubes shall be tested
after seven days, three after 28 days. Test cubes shall be crushed in
presence of Consultant engineer and the results should be submitted
and approved from consultant for giving all data, according to project
specifications division 03 section 33000 part 3.19

 Concrete slump tests shall be on every 40 cubic meters concrete


pouring. , according to project specifications division 03 section 33000
part 3.19

 Concrete temperature shall not exceed 30 degrees centigrade during


concrete pouring and will be checked every delivery, , according to
project specifications division 03 section 33000 part 3.09

9. Submittals:

 Supplier Prequalification of ready mix concrete, , according to project


specifications division 03 section 33000 part 3.03

 Trail mix of concrete at approved batching plant.

 Reinforcement.

 Formwork.

 Concrete Admixtures technical data.

 Shop Drawings including construction joint locations, sequence of


Pouring and method of curing, , according to project specifications
division 03 section 33000 part 1.03

 Prequalification of third party laboratory.

 Calibration certificates of batching plant.

 Curing shall be done according to project specifications division 03


section 33000 part 3.07.

10. STORAGE OF MATERIALS:

 Cement shall be delivered to batch plant in sealed bags bearing the


manufacturer's name and the type of cement, bulk cement delivered
directly from factory in special container trucks and stored in steel,
elevated silos which are painted white for a better sun rays reflectivity.

 Cement shall be fully protected during handling and transport from


adverse weather conditions, moisture and over stacking at batch
plant.

 Steel Reinforcement will be delivered and handled in a manner to


prevent bending and damage.

 Steel Reinforcement and formwork will be stored as per approval


mobilization plan protected from weather conditions, moisture and
over stacking.

 Fine and coarse aggregate should be stored at batching plant far


away from any water sources and drainage system.

 Different sizes of aggregates are stored in bins fully separated to


prevent any mix up materials.

 Aggregate bins are shaded in order to prevent direct sun beating on


the aggregates.

 The flooring of the storage area for aggregate is made of blinding


concrete to provide protection from any soil contamination.

 Admixtures are stored in a special store labeled tank supplied by the


manufacturer.

11. CONCRETE MIXES:

11.1Design of Concrete Mixes

 Supplier of ready mix concrete shall design concrete mixes to satisfy


the strength requirements of various classes of concrete to be used in
the construction works. , according to project specifications division 03
section 33000 part 3.03

 Quantities of cement, fine and coarse aggregate shall be measured


by weight.

 Approved designed mixes shall be maintained throughout the duration


of the Contract.

 Mix designs shall satisfy the specified characteristic concrete strength


requirements as follows, , according to project specifications division
03 section 33000 part 3.19

 Concrete mix may be provisionally accepted on basis of 7-day results,


when these satisfy the requirements for 28-day results, and strengths

shall not be less than 75 % percent of those required at 28-days,


should be approved from consultant.

11.2Workability

 Workability shall be controlled by direct measurement of water


content, making allowance for water contained by fine and coarse
aggregates, slump test shall be used as a guide for workability.

 Target Slump for concrete grades is 150 mm with tolerance +/- 30


mm.

11.3Preliminary Mixes

 All materials inspection, testing and certifications will be submitted to


Engineer for approval.

 Type of cement used shall be ordinary Portland cement complies with


ES No. 373 for above-grade castings and below-grade castings.

 One brand of cement throughout the project will be used and the
source of supply for cement shall be subject to the Engineer's
approval, the date of manufacture must be recorded, also follow-up
tests shall be performed.

 The supplier of ready mix concrete shall at all times furnish test
certificates and proof that the required standard specification has
been followed.

 Cement used in concrete work shall be less than six months old from
date of manufacture.

 Aggregates shall not contain harmful materials which may reduce the
strength or durability of concrete nor materials which may attack the
reinforcement.

 Coarse aggregate shall be free from salt, mica, alkali, organic matter
or other deleterious material either free or as adherent coating on
particles.

 The supplier of ready mix concrete shall continually submitted reports


of grading requirements for coarse and fine aggregate and proof that
the required standard specifications has been followed.

 Fine aggregate should be natural siliceous sands ,clean,hard, durable


and well graded.

 Coarse and fine aggregate shall comply with ES No. 1109, having
absorption as measured in Accordance with BS 812.

 Mixing water for concrete shall be drinking water (potable water) or


water of chemical composition acceptable for drinking and be clean
and free from organic impurities.

 Admixtures shall comply with ASTM C 494 and their type and dose
are dependent upon the trail mixes stage where the performance of
concrete can be observed.

11.4Trail Mixes of Concrete:

 Trial mixes shall be prepared under full-scale conditions and tested in


accordance with ES 1658 (Methods of Testing Concrete).

 Trail mixes for all grades of concrete, slump test and measuring
concrete temperature will be made in attendance of consultant
supervisor.

 Six cubes of each concrete grade will be taken for trail mixes of
concrete three cubes will be crushed after seven days and the
another three cubes will be crushed after 28 days for each concrete
grade.

 Concrete mixing equipment shall be capable of combining all


ingredients into uniform mixture without segregation ,also the plant
assembly has to facilitate the inspection of all operations all times
;
 Components shall be fed into the mixing drum so as to ensure the
most efficient use of mixing period and to avoid any loss of material

 Aggregates, cementitious material and admixtures are batched as per


required quantities of concrete which will be split into equal batches .

 Concrete is mixed in a central plant using high efficiency horizontal


pan mixer.

 All concrete ingredients are batched by weight except water and


admixtures are batched using flow meter.

 The printout should include the actual weights of all ingredients.

 Concrete shall be mixed until a mixture of uniform color an


consistency is obtained and mixing shall continue for at least 1.5
minutes after all water has been added or any other recommendation
by manufacturer of the mixer.

12. MIXERS

 The amount of concrete mixed in any one batch shall not exceed the
rated capacity of the mixer.

 All truck mixers are of the revolving drum type, water tight and
equipped with discharge chute.

 All drums are painted white and maintained clean.

 Regularly an internal inspection is carried out for mixers either on


batching plant or truck mixer and those will be reported to consultant
for advice and information.

 Ready mix concrete supplier will submit checklists and his


maintenance program for all equipment's that will be used in the
project

 On cessation of work, including all delays exceeding 20 minutes, the


mixers and all handling plant shall be washed with clean water and
any deposits of old concrete in drums shall be cleaned out by rotating
clean aggregate and water in the drum, or by other appropriate
means, before any fresh concrete is mixed.

 The internal part of drum is washed after concrete delivery and


maintained free of hardened concrtete.

13. PLACING CONCRETE

13.1Inspection

 Survey setting out works including checking the


boundries,coordinates,alignments and level shall be approved from
consultant according to approved shop drawings.

 Verify that the latest approved for construction shop drawings are
used. , according to project specifications division 03 section 33000
part 1.03

 Material test Certificates for reinforcement, casting and the like are
checked approved

 Notify independent testing laboratory of intended concrete pour.

 All approvals of all trades and disciplines to be obtained from the


“Engineer specially electrometrical trades.

 Dimensional check on overall structure and positions of any cast in


item with respect to known grid lines.

 Verify the specified cover to the reinforcement has been maintained


and that the size and the location of all reinforcement are installed as
per detailed approval shop drawings. , according to project
specifications division 03 section 33000 part 3.12

 Visual check of formwork to achieve the correct class of finish in


addition of formal approval given by formwork specialist conforming
his check. , according to project specifications division 03 section
33000 part 3.13

 Check for adequate number of supports and restrains to ensure


stability during pouring operations.

 Visual check for overall cleanliness and surface preparation prior to


pouring.

 Pre inspection checklist and pouring IR with works inspection forms


Including( survey,civil,MEP) works have been approved by
Consultant’s Representative.

13.2 Preparation of Placing Concrete

 Placing concrete team consist of :

Sufficient number of labors

 Proper, safe and clean access for concrete truck to reach the pump.

 Sufficient number of vibrators will be available on site.

 Proper lighting arrangement in case of pouring at night.

 All finishing tools / equipment's for concrete surface finishing will be


available on site.

 Form work shall be in place and secured properly

 Visual check for overall cleanliness and surface preparation prior to


pouring.

 A slump cone and thermometer shall be available for use by


laboratory technician in order to monitor the concrete slump and
temperature.

 Before placing concrete, inspect and complete form-work installation,


reinforcing steel, etc.

 Forms shall be thoroughly cleaned of all dirt, loose stones etc., and
shall be well soaked with water.

 The first concrete delivery onsite for any particular section of the work
shall be held and the concrete slump measured by the independent
laboratory technician. The concrete pour will only commence after this
and the delivery ticket has been verified against the approved mix
design.

 Wet Concrete should be measured concrete slump exceed the


tolerance after re-slumping the same sample a second time then the
concrete will be rejected. The truck will be identified. All the QC
Inspectors shall have the sole authority to advice of rejected concrete.

13.3 Placing Concrete

 Surfaces to receive concrete shall be clean and free of debris dirt.

 Once the concrete arrived at site and approved / tested by lab-


technician for placing, the site engineer / foreman will ensure that the
fresh concrete is placed in layers and properly vibrated so that
maximum air bubbles are extracted but no segregation is caused due
to expensive vibration.

 Concrete must be deposited to form a monolithic and homogenous


concrete in the member / structure, free of segregation, deformation,
surface defects, excessive / larger size of blow holes, uneven color of
concrete surface after stripping the forms etc.

 General monitoring and surveillance will continue for the duration of


the pour to maintain minimum leakage from forms, sufficient vibration,
controlled placement rate to prevent cold joints, reinforcing steel
unmoved ,finished concrete surface is in accordance with
specification, , according to project specifications division 03 section
33000 part 3.15

 The site must be kept clean during concreting. The concreting


process must be managed in such a manner that the concrete
wastage is minimum and not spilled all over the site. If practically
possible the cleaning of the concrete waste must be done immediately
after finishing the concrete pouring, otherwise the very next day. The
site must be maintained neat and clean all the times as much as
practically possible.

 Concrete placement shall not be permitted when impending weather


conditions may result in rainfall or low temperature which will impair
the quality of finished work. In case rainfall should occur after placing
operations have started, the Contractor shall provide ample covering
to protect the work.

 Maximum free falling height for concrete to be 3.00 m.

 Concrete trucks will be checked by the QC representative prior to


delivery of concrete to ensure the mix is as per the approved design
mix.

14. COMPACTION

 Concrete shall be thoroughly compacted during placing operation and


carefully worked around reinforcement, around embedded fixtures
and into corners of forms.

 Concrete shall be compacted by approved mechanical or


electromechanical vibrators of proper sizes and diameters best suited
for the cast element. Over vibration causing segregation shall be
avoided.

 Spare vibrators shall be kept in case of emergency.

15. TEMPERATURE OF CONCRETE

 The concrete temperature shall be checked for every delivery.

 Concrete temperature shall not exceed 30 degrees centigrade during


concrete pouring, , according to project specifications division 03
section 33000 part 3.09

16. CURING OF CONCRETE

 Curing shall start immediately after the disappearance of free surface


water.

 Curing compound of fresh concrete will be properly applied for all


exposed concrete as per the manufacturer’s instructions and the rate
of application shall be in strict conformance to the manufacturer's
recommendations. , according to project specifications division 03
section 33000 part 3.07

 Clear liquid membrane forming curing compound shall comply with


ASTM C 309,and will be submitted to Engineer for approval.

17. FORMWORK

 Survey setting out works including checking the


boundries,coordinates,alignments and level shall be approved from
consultant according to approved shop drawings.

 Forms for concrete work can be of timber, wrought formwork shall be


used where shown on approval shop drawings.

Lumbers shall be dressed on two edges for tight fit to prevent loss of
concrete.

 Design, erect, support, brace and maintain forms to support vertical


and lateral, static and dynamic loads that might be applied until
concrete structure can support such loads also the design will be
taken into consideration the pressure of concrete placing operations.

 All calculations of formwork system including form construction,


support framing and their loads will be submitted to consultant
Engineer for approval.

 All formworks must be erected with level and flush surfaces and close
fitting edges with joints fitting sufficiently close to prevent leakage of
concrete, according to project specifications division 03 section 33000
part 3.13

 All formworks shall be designed to be sufficiently rigid to maintain the


correct position, shape and profile, so that the final concrete structure
is within the dimensional tolerances, according to project
specifications division 03 section 33000 part 3.13

 Coat contact surface of formwork before reinforcement is placed with


an approved non-residual, rust preventative form coating compound
that will not bond with, stain or adversely affect concrete surfaces and
shall not impair subsequent treatment of concrete surfaces. Do not
allow form coating materials to accumulate in forms or to contact with
hardened concrete surfaces against which fresh concrete shall be
placed. Form coating shall be applied so as to provide a thin uniform
coating without contaminating the reinforcement.

 On completion of formwork, Request for Inspection should be applied


to Consultant engineer and obtain approval for the formwork before
proceeding with concreting.

 Faces of formwork in contact concrete shall be free from adhering


foreign matter, projecting nails, splits or other defects and shall be
clean and free from standing water, dirt, wooden shavings, chippings
or other deleterious matters.

 After the concrete is sufficiently cured, the formwork has to be


stripped. When stripping the formwork it shall be carefully done to
avoid sudden crack from removal of wedges or vibration, which might
cause damage to the concrete.

 Forms shall not be removed until the concrete has attained sufficient
strength to ensure structural stability and to carry both dead load and
any construction loads that may be imposed on It .The minimum
period of time that shall elapse between pouring concrete and
removal of forms shall be as follows, , according to project
specifications division 03 section 33000 part 3.13

 Deshuttering for slabs will take place after concrete strength reaches
75% of the specified compressive strength. Deshuttering will not be
allowed till testing of 7 days cubes took place and the results are
satisfactory, and approved by consultant.

 After stripping, the formwork should be cleaned and prepared for


reuse and should be stored in such a manner that they are easily
accessible

18. Finishing

 . Any defective area requiring remedial works shall be rectified in


accordance with an approved repair.

 .Concrete surface must be horizontal land level for top and bottom of
slab, top of foundation and beam.

 Sides of foundations and columns must be vertical.

19. Q.C AND INSPECTIONS

 Material Test Certificates for reinforcement, casting are checked


approved.

 Verify proposed concrete strength and classifications.

 Pre Inspection checklist and other quality forms has been signed off
as complete by construction team, and other package contractors
especially for electromechanical works.

 All approvals of all trades and disciplines to be obtained from the


consultant Engineer.

 Check of formwork to achieve the correct class of finish and verify


location of formal approval given by formwork specialist conforming
his check . , according to project specifications division 03 section
33000 part 3.13

 Check for adequate number of supports and restrains to ensure


stability during pouring operations with attached approval inspection
request.

 Verify the specified cover to the reinforcement has been maintained


and that the size and the location of all reinforcement are installed as
per detailed drawings and attach the approval inspection request of
reinforcement, , according to project specifications division 03 section
33000 part 3.12

 Sign off pre pour concrete checklist when complete.

 Visually inspect the surface finish, in conjunction with the consultant


prior to covering. Any defective area requiring remedial works shall be
rectified in accordance with an approved repair. , according to project
specifications division 03 section 33000 part 3.15

 Consultant shall sign off the works inspection request as complete


and a copy shall be retained in the quality division records file.

 The QC Inspector shall complete a ‘Record of Concrete Pour’ and file


accordingly. All concrete testing will be done in presence of QC
Engineer and the consultant at the approved third party testing
laboratory.
