1-Fundamentals of vibrations
Vibration Analysis objective

• The main objective of Vibration based condition monitoring is to detect failures

in the wind turbine’s main components early on while the damage is minimal.
The benefits of the Condition Monitoring System are to:
1. Reduce corrective actions
2. Plan the corrective actions ahead of time
3. Optimize preventive maintenance
4. Achieve longer main component and wind
turbine life
5. Identification of possible future higher
failures rates

1-Fundamentals of vibrations
Vibration Analysis Introduction

• Time Domain
• It is a record of the response of a dynamic system, as
indicated by some measured parameter, as a function
of time. This is the traditional way of observing the
output of a dynamic system.
• Frequency Domain
• Over one hundred years ago, Jean Baptiste Fourier
showed that any waveform that exists in the real
world can be generated by adding up sine waves.
• By picking the amplitudes, frequencies, and phases of
these sine waves, one can generate a waveform identical
to the desired signal

Vibration Analysis Introduction

Every machine
vibrates because
of its machining
tolerances.

Vibration (Time Signal)

Any change in the normal
