TITLE : MASONRY

1.0 PURPOSE

1.1 This work procedure has been developed in order to outline the main work
operations and performance of associated quality control activities during masonry
work.

2.0 SCOPE

2.1 This procedure shall during the installation of concrete masonry works on site.

5.0 RESPONSIBILITIES

5.1 Project Manager (PM) shall be responsible for the overall implementation of the
Company Safety Plan and this Work Procedure, liaison/co-ordination with the
Planning and Control (P&C) Department and subcontractors to ensure efficient
execution of work in accordance with the specification requirements.

5.2 The QC Department shall be responsible for conducting surveillance and inspection
duties for work defined herein and efficient recording and reporting of the results as
required.

5.3 The QC Engineer shall functionally report to the Project Manager and shall review
all relevant documentation, material certificates and non-conformances.

5.4 The QC Engineer shall report directly to The A&F Al Rashed Water Company
Quality Assurance Manager.

5.5 The QC Engineer shall receive all Request for Inspection (RFI) Forms from the
Construction Department.

5.6 The Civil Quality Control Inspector shall carry out Planned Inspection, Surveillance
Inspection and release hold points by signing various Quality Records as proof of
Inspection conforming to specifications.

5.7 The QC Inspector shall issue Request for Inspection to the CLIENT as defined by
the ITP.

5.8 The Civil Quality Control Inspector shall accompany the CLIENT’s representative to
carry out routine inspections and release hold points by signing and obtaining the
CLIENT’s representative approval signatures on the various Quality Records as
proof of inspection and conformance to the specifications. The Civil Quality Control
Inspector shall coordinate with other discipline Quality Control Inspectors, to ensure
that all other discipline activities, that require inspection within the civil construction
program, have been inspected and approved.

5.9 The Construction Supervisor (SC) shall be responsible for the observance of all
safety precautions required by the A&F Al Rashed Water Company Safety Plan and
where applicable, the manufacturer’s safety induction sheets.

6.0 MATERIALS CONTROL

6.1 The Quality Inspector shall carry out an inspection of the material when the material
arrives in the warehouse. The inspector shall ensure the material conforms to the
project specifications, purchase order and relevant codes and standards. The QC
inspector shall ensure all the relevant documentation is available and correct.

7.0 QUALITY CONTROL

Masonry Planning

7.1.1 At the weekly works meeting held between the Construction Manager (CM) and the
Engineers, the weekly masonry schedule shall be discussed and the planned
activities detailed.

7.1.2 The Construction Manager shall discuss with the Planning and Control (P&C)
Department the masonry construction schedule and effects on site planning to
ensure

- Masonry Construction are performed in logical sequence.


- There is no conflict with other site activities.

7.2 Frequency of Sampling and Testing

7.2.1 Concrete Blocks : - One test shall be performed for compressive strength as per
ASTM-C90 prior to construction, in addition at least one test shall be performed
during construction for each 5000ft2 of wall area or portion there of.

7.2.2 Mortar : The mortar cube samples obtained on site shall be tested for compressive
strength in the laboratory as per ASTM-C270 for each 5000ft 2 of wall area.

7.2.3 Grout : Grout sampling and testing shall be in accordance with ASTM-C1019 for
each 5000ft2 of masonry.

7.3 Initial Inspection

7.3.1 Prior to commencement of the work the Civil QC Inspector shall inspect the existing
works to ensure that it is suitable for Block wall installation. The results of this
inspection shall be recorded.

7.3.2 The Quality Department shall advise the Civil Engineers that the existing concrete
surface have been made suitable for masonry works.

7.3.3 The Civil QC Inspector shall confirm acceptance of the area by signing off the
Masonry works inspection record. The QC Department shall notify the Civil
Supervisor when the area is accepted.

7.3.4 In the case of building extensions, proposed new masonry work must match with
existing masonry, unless approved/instructed by Client.

7.4 Mortar Mix

7.4.1 Mortar shall conform to ASTM-C270 type M and shall have a minimum compressive
strength of 17.2 Mpa (2500PSI) at twenty eight (28) days . Mortar shall be machine
mix at proportions of 1 part cement, ¼ part lime 3 to 3 ¾ part sand.

7.4.2 Cement Lime and sand for each batch shall be accurately measured by volume and
thoroughly mixed to a consistency suitable for the work.

7.4.3 All cementitious material and aggregates shall be mixed dry until evenly distributed
and until the mass is uniform color. The machine mortar mixing time shall not be
less than 5 minutes, approximately 2 minutes of which shall be used for mixing dry
materials and not less than 3 minutes for mixing water. The water shall be added in
the amount consistent with satisfactory workability.

7.4.4 Hand mixing shall only be permitted if approved. The mortar shall be mixed properly
and thoroughly on a clean, watertight platform until the required consistency is
obtained.

7.5 Placing Mortar and Masonry Units

7.5.1 The Civil Supervisor shall be responsible for the coordination and execution of the
mortar and masonry unit placing in liaison with the QC Department during the
following works:

7.5.1.1 Block walls shall be built from undamaged blocks in stretcher bond, unless
otherwise specified.

7.5.1.2 All bed and vertical joints shall be spread fully with mortar to ensure complete and
solid bedding and grouting through the full thickness of the wall. All keys in jointed
surfaces must be completely filled.

7.5.1.3 Mortar protrusions extending into the cavities of hollow blocks, which are to be
reinforced and filled, shall be removed.

7.5.1.4 Each block shall be adjusted to its final position in the wall while the mortar is still
plastic. Any block which is distributed after the mortar has stiffened shall be
removed and relaid with fresh mortar, after removing the old mortar, plumbed and
bed joints levelled as the work proceeds so as to achieve walls or partitions which
are properly bonded together with the curse leveled round at each floor.

7.6 Fair faced Walls

7.6.1 Fair faced block walls and walls built of facing blocks shall be constructed generally
as per Clause 6.12.4 with particular care being taken to ensure :-

- The specified bonding or joint pattern is consistent.


- The perpends are truly plumb for the full height.
- The blocks used are of the same texture and appearance to avoid patchy effect.
- The colour of the mortar is consistent.

7.6.2 When a block has been placed in the wall the extruded mortar shall be struck off
flush, extra care being taken to avoid smearing the mortar on the face of the block.

7.6.3 Joints shall be left to stiffen slightly and shall then be firmly compacted to give a
flush joint.

7.6.4 If mortar droppings have stuck to the blocks they shall be allowed to dry and the
surplus removed by a trowel. The remaining residue shall be removed by wire
brushing.

7.6.5 The Civil QC Inspector shall carry out visual inspection to ensure that the block
walls have been installed in accordance with the specification requirements. The
results of these inspections shall be recorded.

7.6.6 Where the cutting of block in fair face work is unavoidable, this shall be done using
a mechanical saw . The cutting of facing blocks will only be permitted where this
can be achieved without a visible alteration to the facing pattern.

7.7 Intersecting Walls

7.7.1 Block walls shall be bonded or tied to one another at angles and junctions, unless
movement joints are indicated.

7.7.2 If ties are used they shall consist of 3 x 20 mm galvanized steel plate fully
embedded in the horizontal mortar joints at vertical soakings not exceeding 600mm.
The ends of the ties shall project a minimum of 75mm into each wall portion.

7.8 Hot Weather Construction

7.8.1 When the ambient air temperature exceeds 100F (37.7 0 C), the mortar beds shall
not be spread more than 4ft ahead of masonry, and units shall be set within two (2)
minutes of spreading mortar.

7.9 Connection between Walls or Partitions and Concrete or Steel Columns

7.9.1 Connection where required between block walls or partitions and concrete walls or
columns shall be by means of epoxy coated ties built-in to the concrete or ties shot
fixed to the concrete.

7.9.2 Expanded metal ties shall be of a width that will allow 20mm from each face of the
wall or partition and shall be embedded for a minimum distance of 200 mm in the
mortar joint.

7.10 Lintels

7.10.1 Where specified lintels shall be installed above blockwork openings and have a
minimum end bearing of 200 mm an open joint not less than 12 mm shall be
provided between the ends of precast or cast insitu concrete lintels and the blocks
adjacent to these ends. These joints shall be filled mortar.

7.11 Filling Hollow Blocks

7.11.1 Masonry grout shall conform to ASTM-C476 and shall have a minimum
compressive strength of 13.8 Mpa at twenty eight (28) days. Grout shall be machine
mixed at site.

7.11.2 The cavities of hollow block walls shall be filled with grout in the following situations :

- walls of buildings housing sensitive or vital equipment.


- jambs of all openings.
- ends, angles and junctions of walls and partition.
- junctions of walls and partitions with columns.
- at sills.
- at tops of partitions, if so specified.
- to provide a solid fixing for false ceiling parameters.

7.11.3 The filling to courses shall be supported on a strip of expanded metal latching
embedded in the joint below.

7.11.4 Walls which are to be filled solid shall be built up in lifts not exceeding 1200 mm and
grouted after allowing a minimum period of 24 hours to elapse to enable the mortar
to harden. The initial compaction of grout shall be carried out by hand using a 25 x
50 mm wooden rod or by vibration. The final compaction shall take place 10-15
minutes after initial compaction by vibration.

7.11.5 Masonry walls shall cure for a minimum of 3 days before pouring grout for high lift
grouted construction.

7.11.6 The Civil QC Inspector shall carry out Visual Inspections to ensure that the grouting
is carried out satisfactorily. The results of this inspection shall be recorded

7.12 Reinforcement

7.12.1 Expanded steel mesh joint reinforcement, if specified, shall be embedded in the
horizontal mortar joints not closer than 20 mm from the external face of the wall
and, expect at movement joints, shall be continuous and lapped at least 75 mm at
all passings. Full lap joints shall be provided at angles.

7.12.2 Vertical bar reinforcement shall be properly positioned and secured against
displacement. The cavities containing the reinforcement shall be completely and
solidly filled with the specified mortar or concrete, and with the whole surface of the
reinforcement in contact with the mortar or concrete. The minimum clear distance
between the vertical bars and the blocks shall be 12 mm.

7.12.3 Expanded steel mesh joint reinforcement shall be fabricated from 0.5 mm nominal
thickness tight coat galvanized steel to ASTM-A641 Class 3. The minimum widths
of reinforcement for the various wall thickness shall be:
- 50 mm for 100 mm thick blocks.
- 70 mm for 150 mm thick blocks.
- 125 mm for 200 mm thick blocks.

7.12.4 Movement joints shall be 12mm wide and shall be formed where indicated on the
Construction Drawings or where continuous run of block walling exceed 6 meters in
length or if the length of a wall exceeds twice the height.

7.12.5 The joints shall be straight and vertical formed with uncut faces of blocks to each
side and filled with an approved compressible material manufactured specifically for
building into movement joints.

7.13 Curing and Protection

7.13.1 All newly or partially built walls shall be protected against drying out too rapidly by
covering with hessian or other approved material, which shall be kept wet for a
minimum of 3 days.

7.14 Finishing/Final Inspection

7.14.1 The Civil Engineers shall ensure all debris is removed from the workplace on
completion of works.

7.14.2 The Civil QC Inspector shall carry out a visual inspection of the completed works
and shall record the results of the inspection.

7.14.3 The Quality Manger shall raise an RFI to the Client to request on Inspection of the
completed works, Quality records shall be signed as acceptance to the specified
requirements by all attending parties.

7.14.4 The Survey Department shall produce and maintain as-built records of concrete and
masonry structures to demonstrate that work has been carried out in compliance
with approved construction drawing requirements.

7.14.5 Surveillance and Inspections shall be carried out by the QC Department during
concrete placement and masonry in accordance with this Work Procedure.

8.1 All records relevant to the above procedure shall be retained by the Quality Control
department in the site office, for the duration of the project, before being handed
over to the CLIENT in accordance with the requirements of the contract documents.
Copies of all records shall be made and transferred to the Head Office where they
shall be retained for the guarantee period of the contract.

9.0 SAFETY

9.1 Ensure work permit is valid if applicable.

9.2 Ensure barricades are present.
