Definition

Axle is a component in a car that works to exert engine power to the wheel
axle which previously passed through the transmission and propeller shaft.

1. Ring gear

The first component is the ring gear. This component is in the form of a
large gear that is empty in the middle so it is known as the ‘ring’ gear. The
ring gear has a function as a receiver for the rotation of the pinion drive gear
from the propeller shaft. The ring gear is part of the final gear because it is
the final part of the rear drive car’s powertrain system.

2. Drive Pinion Shaft and Gear

The next component is the drive pinion shaft and gear. The drive pinion
shaft itself is a pinion gear shaft. This section is located as a single unit with
the pinon gear drive. This section has a role as a distributor of rotation of the
propeller shaft. Meanwhile, the drive pinion gear is a gear similar to a
‘pineapple’ fruit. This part has a function as a drive gear from the propeller
shaft to the axle circuit. Shape similar to the ‘pineapple’ is called the hypoid
gear. This form is suitable for distributing power efficiently and gently.
3. Differential Carrier

The next axle component is the differential carrier. Differential carrier is

also known as differential case. This component has a function as a place
chart to place several other axle components. Components such as side gear,
ring gear, and even the tip of the axle shaft are located there.

4. Spider Gear and Shaft

The next component is the spider gear and shaft. The spider gear itself has
a function as a rotational distinguishing gear. There are two spider gears that
are located 90 degrees to the side gear. In this arrangement, when the car
turns, the car’s pedestal will lean to the inside. As a result, the inner wheels
will feel a greater load. In this state the spider gear will experience a different
rotation. Meanwhile, when the car is moving in a straight line, the two spider
gears will stay still.

5. Side Gear

The next axle component is the side gear. The side gear has a function as a
receiver of rotation that has been manipulated by the spider gear to be
forwarded to the axle shaft. Therefore, the side gear will work when the car is
turning. The side gear will be in direct contact with the axle shaft in response
to the spider gear.

6. Axle Shaft Bearing

Next there is the axle shaft bearing. Bearings are used as bearings for
rotating axle components, namely against the casing or axle shaft housing.
There are two axle shaft bearings, namely on the left side gear and right side
gear.

7. Bearing Cap

The bearing cap is the axle shaft bearing retaining component which is
located near the side gear. Although only the bearing is being held, in fact this
component holds the entire axle series of the axle shaft housing.

8. Adjuster Screw

The last axle component is the adjuster screw. This part acts as a final gear
gap adjuster. The final gear gap can be interpreted as the motion of the
pinion gear that rotates before the final gear moves. The size of the gap will
affect the overall axle performance. So that at one time, the final gear gap
adjustment must be done by turning the adjuster nut.
