Introduction [5minutes]

Start the session by greeting the participants :

SAY:

Good morning everyone. I am __________, your facilitator for today. Welcome to the ___ day of the Division Training of Teachers on Critical Content in Science
Grade VI. Today we will discuss Homogeneous Mixtures.

Before we start, let me present to you the spiralling of concepts, content and performance standards and the terminal and enabling objectives of this session.
SPIRALLING OF CONCEPT:
At the end of the session, the participants should be able to appearance and uses of Homogeneous Mixtures

CONTENT STANDARD:
The participants demonstrate understanding of…

Different types of mixtures and their characteristics

PERFORMANCE STANDARD:
At the end of the session, the participants should be able to prepare beneficial and useful mixtures such as drinks, foods, and herbal medicines.

TERMINAL OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the session, the participants should be able to:
● Describe the appearance and uses of homogeneous mixtures.

Note: Read the terminal objectives and enabling objectives on the screen and briefly discuss them.

Pre-Test [10minutes]
Platform: Google Form

SHOW:
Present the Pre-Assessment via google slide through Google Form.

DO: Let the participants analyse each question carefully then let them choose the letter of the correct answer.

Read the questions very carefully. Choose the best answer to each question.

1. Homogeneous mixtures contain which of the following:

a. Solids
b. Liquids
c. Gases
d. All of the above
2. Mixtures that have the same composition throughout, and whose individual elements are known as ___.
a. Heterogeneous
b. Homogeneous
c. Nonhomogeneous
d. None of the above

3. Coffee are homogeneous mixtures of ___.

a. Liquids
b. Gases
c. Metals
d. All of the above

4. Which of the following is NOT homogeneous?

a. Salt water
b. Pure water
c. Iron
d. Coffee

5. An example of homogeneous mixture is ____.

a. Sugar and water
b. Sand and iron
c. Salt and sand
d. Halo-halo

[Note to the facilitator: The Facilitator will give the participants 10 minutes to answer the pretest]

Motivation (5minutes)

SAY:
We are done with the pretest. Now let us have the 1st activity entitled “WORD MIX”.

What HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE am I?

SHOW:
Show picture to the participants.
Milkshake

Softdrinks

Cup of coffee

DO:
Let the participants share their answer and let them describe the mixtures.

ACTIVITY (15minutes)

SAY:
Those pictures are examples of Homogeneous mixtures. Homogeneous mixture has uniform composition and has only one phase. It can’t be separated out
physically. Let’s learn more about homogeneous mixtures!

This time we will have another activity entitled “I Love Coffee”. We will simply make a coffee for ourselves. Observe while making one.

Ask:
Share your observation while you are making your own coffee. Ask why coffee belongs to Homogeneous mixtures.

Congratulations for doing great in our activity.

ANALYSIS (40minutes)
Platform: Google Jam Board

SHOW:
Present activity 2 entitled “MYSTERY BOX GAME”.
DO:
Have the participants do the activity. Let the participants choose one box. Let them arrange the words to describe the appearances and properties of a
homogeneous mixtures.

Note: Let the participants choose a box and complete the sentences that describes homogeneous mixtures.

SAY:
We are done with the first activity. Thank you very much for your active participation. Let us now go deeper and discover the mystery of Homogeneous Mixture.
We have 4 mystery boxes here. Choose one Mystery Boxes. Each box has words, you need to arrange the words to complete the thought that describes
Homogeneous Mixtures.

Homogeneous mixtures properties/ appearances are:

1. A homogeneous mixture consist of single phase, It consist only of solid, liquid or gas.
2. Components are not visible to the naked eye.
3. Particle size is often at atomic or molecular level.
4. Components cannot be separated easily.

(ABSTRACTION 70 MINS)

Note to the facilitator: Develop the concept of the homogeneous mixtures shared by asking the questions below.

1. What is homogeneous mixture?

2. What are the appearance and uses of homogeneous mixture?

Note: Be lenient and generous in dealing with the participants’ responses. Accept all their answers, if possible. However, the facilitator should lead the participants
in coming up with the most appropriate and generally acceptable responses).

SAY:
Homogeneous Mixture Examples in Daily Life

The most basic chemistry lab that we come across every day is our kitchen. Just like in a chemistry lab, in our kitchen, we combine things to get the desired
result. For instance, when we want to enjoy the flavors of several fruits altogether, we prepare ourselves a fruit salad.

AIR
The term “Air” generally refers to an invisible gas present around us that is necessary for any life form to exist. In contrast to the reference of air as one of the four
elements in ancient and medieval mythology and astrology, the air is a general term for the mixture of several gases that makes up the earth’s atmosphere.

SOFT-DRINKS
If you visit grocery store nowadays, you can spot an aisle full of refrigerators, mainly containing several types of soft-drinks, such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, etc. A sot-
drink is any class of nonalcoholic beverage usually containing a sweeterner and artificial or natural flavorings. Any type of soft-srinks is a homogeneous mixture of
solids, liquids and gas. The first sip of drinks taste the same as the last.
GASOLINE
Gasoline, commonly known as petrol, is another item of daily necessity for those who own a vehicle. It is a petroleum-derived flammable liquid that is primarily
used as a fuel in most spark-ignited internal combustion engines. It is a homogeneous mixture of many organic compounds, such as paraffin, olefins, and several
cycloalkanes, obtained by the fractional distillation of petroleum (crude oil) and enhanced by a variety of additives like ethanol.

COOKING GAS
Commonly known as a cylinder gas or cooking gas, LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) is a vividly used fuel for cooking purposes around the world. When you turn
the knob of your stove on, you observe a hissing sound of gas coming out of the burner. The composition of LPG is a mixture of flammable hydrocarbon gases.
Generally, a homogeneous mixture of propane, butane and several other hydrocarbon gases are compressed together to form LPG.
A CUP OF COFFEE
For many of us, coffee is an essential beverage in our daily life. It provides us with jolt of energy that stimulates us to work more efficiently. While some people
enjoy their coffee with milk, others prefer to drink black coffee. Well, both the varieties fall under the category of a homogeneous mixture

LAUNDRY SOAP
Laundry soap is made from natural ingredients, such as plant oils or acid derived from animal fats. It made of different ingredients and you can never separate its
ingredients easily.

HOUSEHOLD CLEANING LIQUID

The very helpful Household Cleaning Liquids. Cleaning is not easy unless you know what ingredients commercial products contain. The most common products
include alkalies, acids, detergents, abrasive, sanitizers and spirit solvents.
APPLICATION (30minutes)

DO:
Scavenger Hunt

SAY:
For our application, the title is “SCAVENGER HUNT” Think of a solution that are available in your home. You will make our own beneficial and useful
homogeneous mixtures such as drinks, foods and herbal medicines. homogeneous mixture. You need to present your output using digital platform or Canva.

SHOW:
Presentation of outputs.

DO:

Post-Activity/Post-Test (10minutes)
Platform: Google Form
Let the participants analyse each question carefully and then choose the letter of the correct answer.

DO:
Have the participants answer the post-test.

SAY:
I would like to end my session with this quote, “A world is indeed a mixture of truth and make-believe. Discard make-believe and take the truth.” Thank you
everyone and God bless and be blessing!
