2 Introduction to OceanStor Dorado V3

2.1 Product Positioning

Dorado V3 is an all-flash storage product designed for midtier-to-enterprise storage
environments. It provides mass data storage, fast data access, high availability, and high
utilization in the ease-of-use and energy saving form factor.
Dorado V3 offers comprehensive and superb solutions by using diverse efficiency boost
mechanisms to provide industry-leading performance. Those solutions help customers
maximize their return on investment (ROI) and meet the requirements of different application
scenarios such as online transaction processing (OLTP), online analytical processing (OLAP),
high-performance computing (HPC), server virtualization, and virtual desktop infrastructure
(VDI).
Dorado V3 uses Huawei's FlashLinkTM dedicated to flash media to achieve high performance
at 0.5 ms stable latency. Value-added services such as inline deduplication, inline compression,
and snapshot will not increase the latency. The gateway-free HyperMetro feature provides an
end-to-end active-active data center solution, which can smoothly evolve to the geo-redundant
disaster recovery (DR) solution to achieve 99.9999% reliability.
The snapshot feature of Dorado V3 implements lossless writable snapshots based on the
redirect-on-write (ROW) mechanism. Veeam Backup & Replication software working with
Huawei snapshot feature implements data protection and DR solutions in the VMware
virtualization environment, decreasing impact on the production environment and reducing
the recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO).

2.2 HyperSnap
HyperSnap is the Huawei-developed snapshot feature of Dorado V3. A snapshot is a
point-in-time copy of source data and serves as a data backup available for a specified data set.
The data backup is a static image of the source data at that time. After being created,
snapshots can be mapped to hosts to process read and write I/Os, or saved as data backups on
the storage system.
HyperSnap has the following advantages:
 Data is backed up online without service interruption.
 Lossless writable snapshots are achieved based on ROW.
 Snapshots occupy small storage space. If the source data is not modified, its snapshot
does not occupy extra storage space. If the source data is modified, the new data is
written into a new location and the snapshot will occupy extra storage space.
 The source data at multiple points in time can be quickly recovered.

Benefit Description
Independent snapshot Snapshots are independent of each other. Each client accesses
data accessible to snapshot data at different points in time for various purposes, such
various applications as data analysis and application test.

Related Concepts
 ROW
ROW is a core technology used to implement snapshot. When receiving a write request
for modifying the source data, the storage system uses ROW to save the new data to a
new location in the storage pool and directs the pointer of the modified data block to the
new location.
 Data organization
The LUNs created in the storage pool of Dorado V3 consist of metadata volumes and
data volumes.
− Metadata volume: records the data organization form (logical block address (LBA),
version, and clone ID) and data attributes. A metadata volume is organized in a tree
structure.
LBA indicates the address of a logical block; the version corresponds to the point in
time of a snapshot; and the clone ID indicates the number of data copies.
− Data volume: stores LUN data.
 Source volume
A volume that stores the source data for which snapshots are generated. It is presented as
the source LUN to users.
 Snapshot volume
A logical data copy generated for the source volume. It is presented as a snapshot LUN
to users. The data organization form (LBA, version, and clone ID) allows each single
LUN in a storage pool to have multiple data copies with the same LBA. The source LUN
and the shared metadata of its snapshots are saved to the same shared tree.
 Snapshot copy
It copies a snapshot to obtain multiple snapshot copies at the activation time. If the
snapshot data is changed, the data in the snapshot copies remains the same as that at the
snapshot activation time.

Backup and Recovery Using Veeam Software 3 Veeam Backup & Replication

3 Veeam Backup & Replication

Veeam Backup & ReplicationTM is a backup solution developed for VMware vSphere and
Microsoft Hyper-V virtual environments. It provides a set of features for performing data
protection and DR tasks to quickly, flexibly, and reliably restore virtualized applications and
data.

Infrastructure
 Veeam backup server
The Veeam backup server is a physical or virtual machine on which Veeam Backup &
Replication is running. It is the configuration and control center in the backup
infrastructure. The backup server performs all types of administrative activities. In
addition to its primary functions, a newly deployed backup server also serves as the
default backup repository to save backups locally.
 Virtual infrastructure server
Virtual infrastructure servers are used to back up and replicate the source ESXi hosts and
targets.
 Backup proxy
Backup proxy provides an optimal route for backup traffic and enables efficient data
transfer. It retrieves VM data from the source storage, then processes and transfers the
data to the target storage.
 Backup repository
A backup repository is used to store backup files and copies.

Backup
Veeam Backup & Replication produces image-level backups of VMs. It treats VMs as objects.
When you back up VMs, Veeam Backup & Replication copies a VM image as a whole, at a
block level. Image-level backups can be used for different types of recovery, including VM
recovery, entire VM recovery, VM file recovery, and file-level recovery.
The backup technology is typically used for VMs with lower RTOs. When the primary VM
fails, you can restore VM data from the backup file.

Data Recovery
Veeam Backup & Replication offers a number of recovery options for various DR scenarios:
 Instant VM recovery enables you to instantly start a VM directly from a backup file.

Best Practices of Huawei OceanStor Dorado V3 for Data
Backup and Recovery Using Veeam Software 3 Veeam Backup & Replication

 Entire VM recovery enables you to restore a VM from a backup file to its original or
another location.
 VM file recovery enables you to recover individual VM files (such as virtual disks and
configuration files).
 Guest OS file recovery enables you to recover individual guest OS files from Windows,
Linux, and other OSs.
Veeam Backup & Replication uses the same image-level backup for all data recovery
operations. You can restore VMs, VM files, and individual guest OS files to the most recent
state or to any available restore point.

Highlights of Huawei and Veeam Integration

Huawei OceanStor series storage systems paired with Veeam Universal Storage API aim to
decrease impact on production environment and reduce the RPO and RTO.
 VM data retrieval decreases the impact of backup activities on VMware production
VMs.
 Individual VM or entire VMs can be recovered quickly and efficiently.
 Scheduled backup tasks periodically create snapshots on Huawei OceanStor storage
devices.
 A separate copy of the production environment can be generated with only a few clicks,
facilitating development, testing, analysis, and troubleshooting.

4 Introduction to the Solution

4.1 Application Scenarios

As the volume of enterprise data grows, enterprise administrators are attaching greater
importance to the security and significance of various data. Data backup and recovery are
critical measures in response to possible accidents such as file loss or data corruption. In the
event of data loss or corruption, you can use backups to restore data.
Veeam Backup & Replication software works with Huawei snapshot feature to provide a data
protection and disaster recovery solution for VMware vSphere applications, which protects
the systems against data loss or corruption with the minimal RPO, RTO, or impact on the
production system.

For the compatibility and restrictions of Veeam Backup & Replication, see:

Backup and Recovery Using Veeam Software 9 Glossary

9 Glossary

Table 9-1 Glossary

Term Definition
Controller The control logic in a storage subsystem that performs command
transformation and routing, aggregation (RAID, mirroring, striping,
or other), high-level error recovery, and performance optimization
for multiple storage devices.
Controller enclosure An enclosure that accommodates controllers and provides storage
services. It is the core component of a storage system and generally
consists of components, such as controllers, power supplies, and
fans.
Disk enclosure An enclosure that consists of components such as expansion
modules, disk modules, power supplies, and fan modules. System
capacity can be expanded by cascading multiple disk enclosures.
RAID level The application of different redundant types to a logical drive. A
RAID level improves the fault tolerance or performance of the
logical drive but reduces the available capacity of the logical drive.
Each logical drive must be specified a RAID level.
Storage system An integrated system that consists of the following parts: controller,
storage array, host bus adapter, physical connection between
storage units, and all control software.
Thin LUN A logic disk that can be accessed by hosts. It dynamically allocates
storage resources from the thin pool according to the actual capacity
requirements of users.
VM A virtual computer simulated by VMware, that is, a logical
computer.
