Cell component Function

Nucleus • Controls the activities of the cell
• Contains the information that is passed from one generation to
the next

Cytoplasm • Made up of a jelly like substance that contains many cell parts
such as the nucleus and the chloroplast (plant cell).
• New substances are made in the cytoplasm.

Mitochondrion • The powerhouse of a cell.

• It takes nutrients from the cell, breaks it down and turn it into
energy.
Vacuole • Its main function is to store food. They can also hold waste
materials so that the rest of the cell is protected from
contamination.

Cell Membrane • A thin layer that controls the movement of materials in and out
of the cell.
• This layer is partially permeable (it allows only certain materials
to pass through.

Cell Wall • Supports the plant cell and gives it a regular shape

Chloroplast • Disc-like cell parts that contain a green pigment called

chlorophyll.
• Chlorophyll is needed for photosynthesis.

Ribosomes • Found on both animal and plant cells

• Ribosomes make protein for the cell. Protein is used to repair
damaged cells. It can be found floating in the cytoplasm.
