“MEScienceville” is a Science Department School-based project of Grade 3 to Grade 6

pupils, parents and teachers of Masambong Elementary School. This is the adaptation of DepEd
Memorandum No. 187 s. 2018 with the title of Pilot Implementation of the School Inside a
Garden Program.

The School Inside a Garden (SIGA) was first introduced by the Department of Education
Culture and Sports (now DepED-Department of Education) in the year 1995 through DECS
Memorandum No. 77, s. 1995. It was initiated to support the national goal for a “Clean and
Green” society. The focus back then was to grow flowers, medicinal herbs, exotic and fruit-
bearing trees. Through this program, learners were given an opportunity to care for plants,
flowers, and trees. This will not only provide shade and color to campuses but will also support
one of DepEd’s core values which is being “Makakalikasan”.

The education sector may have seen this pressing issue pushing the way to revive the
program. November 29, 2018, through DepEd Memorandum No. 187, s. 2018, School Inside a
Garden was once again revived. The primary focus of the program is on establishing schools
inside gardens featuring mostly flowering plants and endemic and native trees such as, but not
limited to Narra Tree (Pterocarpus indicus) and Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciose). This will make
campuses throughout the country green and colorful. It also aims to strengthen the integration of
environmental education both in the elementary and high school curriculum to sustain the
environmental consciousness and action among learners and the community. This can be done by
teaching students the concept of the role and value of trees and other natural resources in
maintaining the ecosystem and during the conduct of actual planting of trees and plants.

SIGA also aims for every school to plant trees in every available space, thus, the concept
of being a school inside a garden. Other alternative methods like container gardening, vertical
gardening, and other appropriate alternative methods may be used by schools without available
planting space. Schools are also tasked to make an inventory of plants and trees within the school
vicinity which should be properly labeled to serve as part of the school’s educational efforts. The
creation of nurseries for indigenous and endemic trees to serve as a laboratory for learners is also
an aim of this program.

Through SIGA, the importance of schools and their roles in rehabilitating the heavily-
challenged natural environment, and their initiatives toward a sustainable National Greening
Program are also highlighted.
In line with this DepEd Executive Order correlated in this new normal education system
in public school in the Philippines we will know the significance of Home/School Gardening and
Planting in environmental awareness and fighting mental health stigma in this time of pandemic

VI. OBJECTIVES:
 To increase the environmental awareness of parents and pupils
 To promote significance of the home/school gardening as an alternative way on
fighting in mental health.
 To aesthetically the school premises.
 To promote good camaraderie of students and parents in planting

VII. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM

In this pandemic, teachers are extremely concerned about their well-being, especially
their mental health, as well as to the pupils and parents. This study looked at and investigated the
impact of practical, school-based gardening on teachers' well-being also to the students and
parents during a pandemic.

MEScienceVille is one of a kind project of science department that coordinates with

pupils parents and teachers in planting/gardening in school and home. Growing plants has long
been praised as a stress-relieving pastime with many positive benefits for the individual.
Gardening can be a healthy activity to pursue at this time when many individuals are working
from home and students are learning at home.

Growing a herbs and flower in school garden could be a psychologically healthy method
for pupils, parents and teachers to beat boredom and give families a sense of security. We have
examples of how gardening may be useful in our society from historical experiences during
difficult times.

IX. FUNDING:
Through solicitations and donations.

X. OUTPUTS:

MEScienceville are a fantastic and exciting way to bring practically any subject to life
and give pupils, parents and teachers a sense of "real-world" meaning while they learn. A
garden can offer the chance to engage in experiential learning but also responsibility,
teamwork, and respect for nature, other people, and oneself. Gardens can be a fun
approach to achieve Core Curriculum Content Standards and have been shown to
improve test scores and student learning. Edible gardens are a useful tool that schools
may utilize to foster healthy eating habits, appreciate locally grown food sources, teach
environmental stewardship, and promote community and social development, whether
they are producing vegetables, fruits, or a variety of herbs.

The social and emotional growth of pupils, parents and teachers has been found
to be influenced by working in school gardens. For instance:
1. Students show a greater concern for and readiness to care for living things
when they engage in practical gardening activities.
2. Growing their experiences and skills, children learn to accept risks by trying
new things like gardening.

XIII. SUSTAINABILITY PLAN

READY... All the things that need from small item to the big picture in making the MEScienceVille.
Being prepared in many respects entails having the knowledge and abilities necessary to handle the
challenges that lie ahead, as well as to participate in and learn from current events. It is best for
development to have this balance of readiness and openness to learning.

GET SET… Setting objectives in making this project enables to develop new habits, direct attention, and
maintain momentum in life an new normal life. A sense of self-mastery and concentration alignment are
two additional benefits of goals.

GROW… We can learn from and apply some aspects of a plant's life that are crucial to its growth and
development to our own. Utilize these tools from nature to assist you in caring for your own garden. Use
the suggestions above to water yourself every day. Allow your seeds to grow, your roots to develop, and
the sun to illuminate your face. You will grow more as you plant more. Your experiences will be more
plentiful the more you take care of yourself. Consider what you can accomplish simply utilizing your
intellect, since a plant doesn't require one to develop. Success is only a state of mind. It serves as a
springboard for the development of concepts and chances that will ultimately result in the life and career
you envision.

XIV. PROGRAM AND SUCCESS INDICATORS

Teachers of all ages were so concerned about their health during this pandemic that
it even had an impact on their general wellbeing. The usefulness of a hands-on, school-based

gardening program as an intervention for the teachers' wellbeing during the pandemic has been
researched and explored by researchers. Descriptive statistics were used to handle the data. The
study's findings demonstrated that teachers strongly concur that everyone can gain advantages
from gardening, including social advantages, improved mental wellbeing, nutritional advantages,
and physical activity benefits for both social and physical health.

Teachers exhibited highly positive attitudes on gardening. Teachers' levels of enjoyment

significantly increased when they participated in hands-on school gardening activities and were
exposed to them. They also believed that gardening activities had a favorable impact on people's
health and well-being. Themes that keep coming up among teacher-participants point to the value
of participating in gardening activities to improve people's health and well-being and to increase
social connection, communication, motivation, and task engagement. Getting involved with
gardening at home is worthwhile. To learn how gardening affects kids' academic performance
and offers advice on how to deal with obstacles in life, more research may be done incorporating
gardening into the teachings.

This is how the participants will assess the program on the level of agreement with the
statement Strongly Agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree and Strongly Disagree.
