I. WHAT HAPPENED

PRE-ACTIVITY/PRE-TEST
A. Multiple Choice

A ball is thrown straight up from point A, reaches a maximum height at point B, and then
falls back to point C, as shown in Figure. Use this to answer questions 1 to 3.

1. Which is true about the direction of the ball’s velocity and acceleration between A and
B?

2. Which is true about the direction of the ball’s velocity and acceleration between B and C?

3. Which is true about the ball’s velocity and acceleration at the highest point B?
a. Its velocity and acceleration are both zero.

4. A Warship simultaneously fire two missiles with the same initial speed at two enemy
ships. The missiles follow the trajectories given in the Figure above. Which ship gets hit
first?

b. enemy 2

B. Picture Analysis:

I observed that these three motions do not move in a linear path but instead they all move in a
curve/angular type of path.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Use your understanding of projectiles to answer the following
questions. Explain your answers or show your solutions.
1. Consider these diagrams in answering the following questions.

Which diagram (if any) might represent:

a. ... the initial horizontal velocity?
A - It is the x component of the initial velocity that is why the arrow is pointing to the
right along the x-axis

b. ... the initial vertical velocity?

C (if projected upward) and B (if projected downward) – It is the y component of the
initial velocity that is why the arrow is pointing upwards and downwards along the y-axis

c. ... the horizontal acceleration?

None – There is no horizontal acceleration because I am assuming there are no factors
affecting the motion like the air resistance.

d. ... the vertical acceleration?

B - The only vertical acceleration that is acting upon the motion is the acceleration due to
gravity and it is only acting along a vertical downward direction

e. ... the net force?

B – net force is the downward force of gravity.

2. Supposing a snowmobile is equipped with a flare launcher that is capable of launching a

sphere vertically (relative to the snowmobile). If the snowmobile is in motion and launches
the flare and maintains a constant horizontal velocity after the launch, then where will the
flare land (neglect air resistance)?
a. in front of the snowmobile
b. behind the snowmobile
c. in the snowmobile
The flare will land in C (in the snowmobile) because the horizontal velocity of the flare will
always be the same as of the snowmobile. Therefore, it will always be on top of the
snowmobile. The only thing that changes from time to time is its vertical position and that is
due to gravity but that won’t affect its constant horizontal velocity.

3. Suppose a rescue airplane drops a relief package while it is moving with a constant
horizontal speed at an elevated height. Assuming that air resistance is negligible, where will
the relief package land relative to the plane?

a. below the plane and behind it.

b. directly below the plane
c. below the plane and ahead of it
The relief package will land in B (directly below the plane) because the horizontal velocity of
the relief package will always be the same as of the plane. Therefore, it will always be below
the plane. The only thing that changes from time to time is its vertical position and that is due
to gravity but that won’t affect its constant horizontal velocity.

shown. Determine the horizontal and vertical velocities at each instant shown in the diagram.

8. Cite one real life experience that
shows a projectile motion has occurred and how it occurred. State it briefly.
I remembered a moment when I played basketball with my friends. I have observed that the
path of the ball when I shot it towards the ring formed a curved path or a parabola type of
path. The force that I inserted when I threw the ball served as the fuel for the ball to gain
speed which is the initial velocity. The distance between me and the ring served as the
maximum displacement or range. The moment when the ball seemed to stop mid-air, its
vertical velocity became 0 that time. The ball went in the ring and I just realized now that I
just calculated a perfect equation for the ball to go in the ring without even thinking about it
deeply.
