ASSIGNMENT-1

1. What is (a) the highest, (b) the lowest total resistance that can be secured by combinations of
four coils of resistances 4 Ω, 8 Ω, 12 Ω, 24 Ω? (Ans: 48 ohm and 2 ohm)
2. Judge the equivalent resistance when the following are connected in parallel
(a) 1 Ω and 105 ohms
(b) 1 Ω, 103 ohm and 106 ohm
3. An electric lamp of 100 Ω, a toaster of resistance 50 Ω, and a water filter of resistance 500 Ω
are connected in parallel to a 220 V source. What is the resistance of an electric iron
connected to the same source that takes as must current as all three appliances and what is the
current through it? (Ans: R=31.25 ohm, I= 7.04 ohm)
4. Calculate the resistance of 1 km long copper wire of radius 1 mm. (Resistivity of copper =
1.72 x 10-8ohm m) (Ans: 5.5 ohm)
5. How many electrons pass through a lamp in one minute if the current is 250mA? (Ans:79.2 x
1018)
6. A 4ohm resistance wire is doubled on it. Calculate the new resistance of the wire. (Ans:
1ohm)
7. Find the current drawn from the battery by the network of four resistors Shown in the figure.

(Ans: I=0.4A)
8. Find the current flowing through the following electric circuit.

(Ans: 0.5 A)
9. How much current will an electric bulb draw from 220 V source if the resistance of the bulb
is 1200Ω? If in place of bulb, a heater of resistance 100 Ω is connected to the sources,
calculate the current drawn by it. (Ans: I= 0.18A, I=0.22A)
10. A 9Ω resistance is cut into three equal parts and connected in parallel. Find the equivalent
resistance of the combination. (Ans: 1ohm)
11. Consider the following circuit diagram. If R1 = R2 =R3 = R4= R5 = 3 Ω, find the equivalent
resistance (Rs) of the circuit.

(Ans: 8ohms)
12. Five resistors are connected in a circuit as shown. Find the ammeter reading when circuit is
closed

(Ans: I=1A)
13. Two resistors with resistances 5Ω and 10 Ω are to be connected to a battery of emf 6 V so as
to obtain:
(i) minimum current
(ii) maximum current
(a) How will you connect the resistances in each case?
(b) Calculate the strength of the total current in the circuit in the two cases.
(Ans: I (max)= 1.8A, I (min)= 0.4A)
14. What is the maximum resistance that can be made using five resistors each of 1/5 ohm? (Ans:
1ohm)
15. There are five electric appliances, viz. electric heater and electric lamp, an electric fan,
computer and an exhaust fan are connected in parallel in a household. The resistance electric
appliances are 40Ω, 5 Ω, 8Ω, 20Ω and 10Ω respectively. If an electric current of 240V is
flowing through the circuit then find
(a)Total resistance through the circuit (Ans: 2ohm)
(b)Total electric current (I) through the circuit (Ans: 120 A)
(c) the current through each of the resistor. (Ans: 6A, 48A, 30A, 12A, 24A)
