What’s In
We already learn about internet. Internet is the global system of
interconnected computer networks that uses the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to
communicate between networks and devices. To collaborate with other people or
group of people using different user generated content, we make use of
communication tools and educational resources in the internet.

___3. discussion forum ___8.

___4. social networking sites ___9. online test

___5. Interactive map ___10. e-group

4
What’s New
This activity will help you think of the lesson we will be learning today.

Study the picture below. Answer the questions on a separate sheet of paper.

1. What do the people in the picture have?

2. Describe the devices held in their hands?

3. What are the types of mobile devices that you know?

5
What Is It
In this generation, people are lucky to have high technology to use in daily life.
Most of the time, people use computers in many ways. People use this to collaborate
with other people or group of people. We are aware of the computer but we do not
know that there are many types of computer especially those which are handheld.

Meaning of Mobile Device

A mobile device (or handheld computer) is a computer small enough to hold

and operate in the hand. Typically, any handheld computer device will have an LCD
or OLED flat screen interface, providing a touchscreen interface with digital buttons
and keyboard or physical buttons along with a physical keyboard. Many such
devices can connect to the Internet and interconnect with other devices such as car
entertainment systems or headsets via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular networks or near
field communication (NFC). Integrated cameras, the ability to place and receive
voice and video telephone calls, video games, and Global Positioning System (GPS)
capabilities are common. Power is typically provided by a lithium battery. Mobile
devices may run mobile operating systems that allow third-party apps specialized for
said capabilities to be installed and run.

Mobile device is a portable, wireless computing device that is small enough to

be used while held in the hand; a handheld: a large selection of smartphones, PDAs,
and other mobile devices.

A mobile device is a general term for any type of handheld computer. These
devices are designed to be extremely portable, and they can often fit in your hand.
Some mobile devices—like tablets, e-readers, and smartphones—are powerful
enough to do many of the same things you can do with a desktop or laptop
computer.

Types of Mobile Device

1. Mobile Computers – a technology that allows transmission of

data, voice and video via a computer or any other wireless
enabled device without having to be connected to a fixed
physical link.

2. Digital Still Camera (DSC) is a camera that captures

photographs in digital memory. Most cameras produced
today are digital, and while there are still dedicated digital
cameras, many more cameras are now incorporated into
mobile devices like smartphones, which can, among many
other purposes, use their cameras to initiate live video-
telephony and directly edit and upload image to others.
However, high-end, high-definition dedicated cameras are still commonly used by
professionals and those who desire to take higher-quality photographs.

6
3. Digital Video Camera (DVC) or digital camcorder is a
camera used for electronic motion picture acquisition (as
opposed to a movie camera, which records images on film),
initially developed for the television industry but now
common in other applications as well.

4. Mobile Phones, cellular phone, cell phone,

cellphone or hand phone, sometimes shortened to
simply mobile, cell or just phone, is a portable
telephone that can make and receive calls over a radio
frequency link while the user is moving within a
telephone service area. The radio frequency link
establishes a connection to the switching systems of a
mobile phone operator, which provides access to the
public switched telephone network (PSTN).

5. Pager (also known as a beeper or bleeper)

is a wireless telecommunications device that
receives and displays alphanumeric or voice
messages. One-way pagers can only receive
messages, while response pagers and two-way
pagers can also acknowledge, reply to, and
originate messages using an internal
transmitter.

6. Personal Navigation Device (PND) also known as

Personal Navigation Device or Portable Navigation
Device (PND) is a portable electronic product which
combines a positioning capability (such as GPS) and
navigation functions.

7. Smart Card, chip card, or integrated circuit card

(ICC) is a physical electronic authorization device, used
to control access to a resource. It is typically a plastic
credit card-sized card with an embedded integrated
circuit (IC) chip. Many smart cards include a pattern of
metal contacts to electrically connect to the internal
chip. Others are contactless, and some are both. Smart
cards can provide personal identification, authentication, data storage, and
application processing. Applications include identification, financial, mobile phones
(SIM), public transit, computer security, schools, and healthcare. Smart cards may
provide strong security authentication for single sign-on (SSO) within organizations.
Numerous nations have deployed smart cards throughout their populations.

8. Project ARA
Initially developed in 2013, Project Ara was an experimental
Android smartphone from Google based on Phonebloks, a
modular phone concept designed by Dave Hakkens. The

7
prototype phone was completely modular, meaning that individual components could
be removed, replaced, and upgraded based on a user's needs. Modularization was
done by using small tiles that slid into the back of the phone, connecting with the
central unit via pin connectors.

In 2016, Project Ara was canceled, and all development of the modular
Android smartphone was stopped.

Characteristics of Mobile Device

1. Portability
Mobile devices are defined by their ability to be moved frequently. Any mobile
device should function and operate consistently while on the move, regardless of
proximity to a power source or physical Internet connection. To aid in portability,
mobile devices typically contain rechargeable batteries that allow several hours or
more of operation without access to an external charger or power source.

2. Small Size
Mobile devices are also known as handhelds, palmtops and smartphones due
to their roughly phone-like dimensions. A typical mobile device will fit in the average
adult's hand or pocket. Some mobile devices may fold or slide from a compact,
portable mode to a slightly larger size, revealing built-in keyboards or larger screens.
Mobile devices make use of touch screens and small keypads to receive input,
maintaining their small size and independence from external interface devices. The
standard form of a mobile device allows the user to operate it with one hand, holding
the device in the palm or fingers while executing its functions with the thumb.

3. Wireless Communication
Mobile devices are typically capable of communication with other similar
devices, with stationary computers and systems, with networks and portable phones.
Base mobile devices are capable of accessing the Internet through Bluetooth or Wi-
Fi networks, and many models are equipped to access cell phone and wireless data
networks as well. Email and texting are standard ways of communicating with mobile
devices, although many are also capable of telephony, and some specialized mobile
devices, such as RFID and barcode readers, communicate directly with a central
device.
