What Is Ikigai?

▪ Ikigai is a Japanese phrase that means “a


reason for being”. In other words, it’s your life’s
purpose. It’s what helps you live a happy life.

▪ Your Ikigai is at the intersection where your


passions and talents converge with the things
that the world needs and is willing to pay for.

▪ It should have the following features:

⎼ It should be something you love doing

⎼ It should be something you are good at

⎼ It should be something the world needs

⎼ It should be something you can be paid for

How To Find Your Ikigai
To find your Ikigai, you need to answer four questions:

What are you good What can you be


at doing? paid for doing?

What do you love What does the


doing? world need?

What you love + What the world needs = MISSION

Eg. activism

What the world needs + What you can be paid for = VOCATION

Eg. teaching

What you can be paid for + What you are good at = PROFESSION

Eg. any 9-5 job

What you are good at + What you love = PASSION

SMART Goals

▪ We all have personal goals for our health, education, work, and personal life.

▪ But simply having a goal isn’t good enough.

▪ It has to be a SMART Goal.

▪ SMART is an acronym:

How To Make Your Goals SMART: Examples

When your goal is to submit assignments on time


▪ Weak Goal Example: I’m going to submit assignments on time
▪ SMART Goal Example:
⎼ Specific: I will complete every assignment at least one day before
it’s due.
⎼ Measurable: I will list all my assignments in order of their due date
and work accordingly. I will spend 30 minutes every Sunday night
listing the projects I need to work on in the coming week.
⎼ Achievable: I can plan my assignments better to ensure I submit
everything on time without rushing at the last minute.
⎼ Relevant: I want to submit better assignments without the stress
of last-minute work.
⎼ Time-bound: I will follow this process for the entire semester.

SMART Goal Example Summary:


▪ I will spend 30 minutes every Sunday planning and scheduling
the assignments I have due each week and work on them in
order of priority to ensure I complete every assignment one day
before it is due this semester.

2. When your goal is to get your dream job


▪ Weak Goal Example: I’m going to get my dream job.
▪ SMART Goal Example:
⎼ Specific: I’m going to become a search engine optimization (SEO)
specialist for a leading e-commerce company like Amazon or
Nykaa and work remotely.
⎼ Measurable: I will apply to a minimum of 8 job applications within
two months.
⎼ Achievable: I’ve worked as an SEO specialist for two years in an
office for an accounting firm, and I’m good at my job.
⎼ Relevant: I want to collaborate with interesting people, contribute
to something innovative, and join a company with room for me to
grow.
⎼ Time-bound: I will apply to 8 suitable job applications within two
months by submitting 1 application per week.

SMART Goal Example Summary:


▪ I will land my dream job working for as a SEO specialist for a leading
e-commerce company like Amazon or Nykaa. To achieve this, I will
apply for 1 job per week for 2 months — submitting a total of 8 job
applications.
