Calculation of Wind loads:

Ref: IS :875 -1984 (Part III), Calculation of wind loads on buildings

(For kurnool as per
Basic wind speed ( Vb ) = 39 m/sec IS 875 part 3 App-A)
Height of the Building ( h ) = 17.00 m 446.9-429.9
Length of the Building ( l ) = 21 m
Width of the Building ( w ) = 9 m
Design life of structure = 100 years
Height of column above the step = 4.000 m
Depth of column (d) = 0.75 m
Widtth of the column ( b) = 0.5 m
C/C distance b/w columns along widt = 8.25 m
Avg.c/c distance b/w columns along l = 4.35 m
Height of Truss = 1.4 m
Roof Angle = 18.747 degrees

Step 1 : Calculation of Design wind pressure :

i. Calculation of risk co-efficient (k1) : (table 1 of IS 875 part 3)
It depends on design life of the structure
k1 = A-(B((ln(-1/N*ln(1-PN))))
A+4B
For wind speed 39 Constant A = 84.000
Constant B = 14.000
Factor k1 = 1.06

ii.Calculation of Terrain, Height and Structure Size factor ( k2 ) : (cl.5.3.2 of IS 875 part 3)
It depends on Terrain category of the structure.
Terrain category = 1.0
Class of a Structure = B
Factor k2 = 1.070
iii. Calculation of Topography Factor : (cl.5.3.3 of IS 875 part 3)
It Depends on ground slope of the structure.
Slope < 3 degrees Factor k3 = 1.000
k4 cyclonic risk factor = 1.000
Design wind Speed (Vz) = Vb*k1*k2*k3*k4 = 44.279 m/sec
(cl. 5.3 of IS 875 part 3)
Design wind Pressure (Vz) = 0.6*Vz2 = 1176.401 N/m2

Step 2 : Calculation of External wind pressure co-efficient : (table 5 of IS 875 part 3)

h/w = 17 / 9
= 1.889

l/w = 21 / 9
= 2.333

L

0.50 < h/w < 1.50, h/w = 1.889

For h/w = 1.889 , external wind pressure coefficients are given in table below.
As per Table 5 of IS 875(part3)
Roof Angle Wind Angle (θ) Wind Angle (θ)
degrees 0 90
EF GH EG FH
10 -0.7 -0.8 -0.8 -0.8
20 -0.8 -0.6 -0.8 -0.8

For 18.747 degrees slope

Roof Angle Wind Angle (θ) Wind Angle (θ)
degrees 0 90
EF GH EG FH
18.747
-- 0.787 -- 0.625 -- 0.800 -- 0.800
Note: Possitive wind presssure indicates the force acting towards the structural
Element and Negative away from it.
Step 3 : Calculation of Internal pressure co-efficient :
It depends on openinngs in the building. For this case, openings are considered as 5 to 10% of
wall area.
As per cl.6.2.3.2 of IS 875 part 3
For 5 to 20 % Openings, Internal pressure coeffi = 0.5 Positive
= -0.5 Negative

Step 4 : Calculation of Total pressure co-efficient :

Total = External + Internal
i. For '0 ' degrees :
-0.625 Leeward
Wind ward 0.787
1.4

Internal 0.5 -0.5

8.25

Total = External + Internal

Windward Internal (+) = 0.787 + 0.50
= 1.287
Internal (-) = 0.787 - 0.50
= 0.287

Leeward Internal (+) = -0.625 + 0.50

= -0.125
Internal (-) = -0.625 - 0.50
= -1.125

ii. For '90' degrees :

Wind ward -0.800 -0.800 Leeward

Internal 0.5 a -0.5

8.250 n
d

Total = External + Internal

Windward Internal (+) = -0.800 + 0.50
= -0.300
Internal (-) = -0.800 - 0.50
= -1.300

Leeward Internal (+) = -0.800 + 0.50

= -0.300
Internal (-) = -0.800 - 0.50
= -1.300
