Q.1 The following graphs shows the variation of photocurrent for a photosensitive
metal: 2
(a) Identify the variable X on the horizontal axis.

(b) What does the point A on the horizontal axis represent?

(c) Draw this graph for 3 different values of frequencies of incident radiation v1,
v2 and v3 (v1>v2>v3) for same intensity
(d) Draw this graph for 3 different values of intensities of incident radiation I1,
I2, I3 (I1>I2>I3) having same frequency.

Q.2 Answer the following questions: 2

(a) How does one explain the emission of electron from a photosensitive surface
with the help of Einstein’s photoelectric equation?
(b) The work function of the following metals is given as Na=2.75 eV, K=2.3 eV,
Mo=4.17 eV and Ni=5.15 eV. Which of these metals will cause photoelectric
emission for radiation of wavelength 3300 A0 from a laser source placed 1 m
away from these metals? What happens if the laser source is brought nearer
and placed 50 cm away?

Q.3 Find the ratio of minimum to maximum wavelength in Balmer series. 2

Q.4 Using Bohr’s postulates, derive the expression for the total energy of the electron
in the stationary states of the hydrogen atom. 3

Q.5 Answer the following 3

(a) Draw a graph showing the variation of potential energy of a pair of nucleons
as a function of their separation.
Mark the regions, where the nuclear force is attractive and repulsive.
(( 2 ))

(b) In the nuclear reaction,

𝑛 + 235
92𝑈 →
𝑎
54𝑋𝑒 + 94𝑏𝑆𝑟 + 2𝑛
Determine the value of ‘a’ and ‘b’

Q.6 Explain briefly with the help of necessary diagrams, the forward and the reverse
biasing of a p-n type junction diode. Also draw their characteristic curves in the
2 cases. 3

Q.7 Answer the following 3

(a) Obtain the de Broglie wavelength of a neutron of kinetic energy 150 eV. An
electron beam of this energy is suitable for crystal diffraction experiments.
Would a neutron beam of the same energy be equally suitable? Explain.
(mn=1.675 × 10-27 kg).
(b) Obtain the de Broglie wavelength associated with thermal neutrons at room
temperature. Hence explain why a fast neutron with the environment before
it can be used for neutron diffraction experiments (ka=1.38 × 10-23 J/K).

Q.8 A hydrogen atom initially in the ground state absorbs a photon, which excites it
to the n=4 level. Determine the wavelength and frequency of photon. 3

Q.9 Hydrogen is the simplest atom of nature. There is one proton in its nucleus and
an electron moves around the nucleus in a circular orbit. According to Neil Bohr,
this electron moves in a stationary orbit. When this electron is in the stationary
orbit it emits no electromagnetic radiation. The angular momentum of the
electron is quantized, i.e. mvr=(nh/2π), where m=mass of the electron, v=
velocity of the electron, r=radius of the orbit and n=1, 2, 3….. When transition
takes place from Kth orbit to Jth orbit energy of photon is emitted. If the
1 1 1
wavelength of the emitted photon is λ we find that = 𝑅[𝐽2 − 𝐾2 ], where
𝜆

R=Rydberg’s constant.
On a different planet, the hydrogen atom’s structure was somewhat different
from ours. The angular momentum of electron was p=2n(h/2π), i.e. an even
multiple of (h/2π). 4
(a) What is the minimum permissible radius of the orbit?
(b) In our world, the velocity of electron is vo when the hydrogen atom is in the
ground state. Find the velocity of electron in this state on the other planet.
(c) In our world, the ionization potential energy of a hydrogen atom is 13.6 eV.
What will be the ionisation potential energy on the other planet?
(( 3 ))

(d) What is the total energy of the electron in the stationary states in the nth
orbit of the hydrogen atom?

Q.10 Answer the following question: 5

(a) Draw a plot showing the variation of photoelectric current with collector
potential for different frequencies but same intensity of radiations.
(b) Use Einstein’s photoelectric equation to explain the observations from this
graph.
(c) What change will you observe if the intensity of incident radiation is changed
but the frequency remains the same.
