ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

The English Language Department offers a six-level intensive program for English as a Foreign Language. All six
levels (A1, A2, B1.1, B1.2, B2.1, and B2.2) are aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for
Languages Learning (CEFR). Levels A1 – B2.1 focus on building a solid foundation of English proficiency in all four
skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing, whereas Level B2.2 increasingly focuses on the language skills,
critical thinking, and study skills required for being a successful undergraduate and graduate student in a university
setting where English is the language of instruction. The English Language Department uses a custom proficiency test
to determine the level of English proficiency of students and faculty according to the CEFR descriptors listed below.
These tests use the following grading scales: 0-30 = A1; 31-60 = A2; 61-79 = B1; 80-94 = B2; 95-110 = C1; 111-120
= C2.

either party; and can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a
topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

PROFICIENT USER

implicit meaning; can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for
