CARE FOR NON-READERS NARRATIVE REPORT

School Year 2020-2021

I. INTRODUCTION

Reading is the process of taking in the sense or meaning of letters,

symbols, etc., especially by sight or touch. It is a multifaceted process that
develops only with practice. There are aspects of reading that can be learned
in a few years in schools or through experiences (fluency and word
recognition). These basic reading aspects must be mastered but at the same
time reading comprehension should be emphasized. Nowadays, there are still
a few that doesn’t even recognize letters and its sounds. The basic and first
thing a student should learn for him/her to read.
The ability to read is the key of knowledge: it is the key to knowing the
world around us and ourselves. Without it, life can be nearly impossible
(Department of Education, 2013).
Care for Non-Readers (CNR) is the program the DepEd implemented to
continuously fulfill its mandate to produce productive and responsible
citizens that are equipped with essential competencies and skills for lifelong
learning. It aims to make every learner a proficient reader and to achieve a
zero-school non-reading students.

II. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the school year, the students are expected to:
1. Practice and perfect INSPIRE Program ( Intensive, Systematic,
Phonics instruction and Reading recovery).
2. Make every child/student a reader.
3. Teach the non-readers the basic reading skills (letter recognition,
sound recognition).
4. Students become adequate reader.
5. Introduce letters and signs. Employ direct phonemic awareness
training.
6. Strengthen the teachers’ skill in communication so that the quality of
English teaching will be improved.

III. PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

1. No face to face interaction with the CNR students due to the COVID-19
Pandemic.
2. Lack of time for students to deal with their reading ability due to some
personal matters (works part-time to help parents with their everyday
needs due to pandemic).

IV. ACCOMPLISHMENTS

1. Active participation from the students and parents.

2. Interaction of students was observed using the medium of instruction
even if it’s just in simple sentences.
3. Learning to read and speak motivated the students to become
attentive and participative.

V. RECOMMENDATIONS/SUGGESTIONS

1. Have a room intended for CNR students only.

2. Provide their learning needs and facility.
3. Encourage students and parents to have reading time at home,
4. Continue to implement facilitative learning for active participation.
5. Have student leaders or talented students join in the activity to help in
the individual tasks.
