CONCEPT NOTES
A. FLAT STITCHES
1. Running Stitch – used to outline the design and fill big space.
2. Back Stitch – used for lines and outlines
3. Outline stitch – used for linear patterns and outlines of a design.
4. Outline-filling stitches – used to fill up the pattern using outline stitches.
5. Long and short stitches – used for shading and entirely filling a petal or a leaf with long and short satin
stitches.
6. Satin stitches – used to fill up the surface of the design.
7. Seed stitch – used for bigger surfaces with resembles the scattered seeds all over the thicker thread is
usually used.
8. Straight stitch – used for making long stitches which resembles blades of grass or flowerets.
9. Surface darning stitch – done in a manner similar to weaving and the finished stitch looks like a plain
weave.
B. CROSSED STITCHES
1. Cross-stitch – used for canvass work.
2. Herringbone stitch – also used in canvas work.
3. Zigzag stitch – almost similar to straight stitch but it is done like the shape of mountains at the
same interval and length.
C. LOOPED STITCHES
1. Chain Stitch – used for fillings, edgings, outlines, and linear patterns.
2. Chain-filling stitch – used to fill up the entire space of the pattern.
3. Lazy Daisy stitch – used for flowerets and small leaves.
4. Buttonhole stitch – also called as blanket stitch and is used for edgings and cut work.
5. Fly stitch – looks like letter Y when stitched and is used to depict a flying bird.
6. Leaf stitch – used in embroidering leaf patterns; a variation of fly stitch.
7. Feather stitch – used to resemble feathers; a modified version of fly stitch.
D. KNOTTED STITCHES
1. French knot stitch – used for flowerets or nucleus of the petals of the flower.
2. German knot stitch – a larger version of a French knot.
3. Bullion stitch – looks like a piece of twine; done by pulling the needle out from a point and the
thread is wounded several times around the needle before bringing the needle down to another
point.
4. Macramé stitch – also known as cable stitch; made up of German knots stitch and is used for linear
patterns.
E. COUCHED STITCHES
1. Couching stitch – used for curved lines; done by crossing a thick thread linearly then couching the
thread with the same or different thread having equal intervals.
2. Couched trellis stitch – also known as basket stitch.
