 Why is the government of Nepal investing specifically in hydropower?

Nepal has a huge potential for hydropower production, but remains mostly untapped. Hydropower
potential of the river systems in Nepal is in order of about 83000 MW, about half of which is
economically feasible for development. In order to meet increasing demand of power, Government of
Nepal has made effort to consolidate and strengthen existing generating facilities with a view to increase
efficiency in production and distribution of energy. The perennial nature of Nepali rivers and the steep
gradient of the country's topography provide ideal conditions for the development of hydroelectric
projects. Govt. of Nepal thus considered development of the abundant hydropower potential as top
priority by the private sector and export power as one of its main sources of revenue to contribute
substantially towards the economy of the country. Thus, Nepal government is trying to specifically invest
in hydropower sector in Nepal by attracting domestic and foreign direct investment. Investments being
made under intergovernmental, public, and private partnerships.
