1. OVERVIEW OF THE TH7195 USER'S MANUAL

This manual explains how to install and use the TH7195 Power Supply.
The manual is divided into five chapters.

1.3. Operators' safety

For the correct and safe use of the TH7195 Power Supply, it is essential that the personnel
follows the safety precautions described in this manual.
WARNING :
The TH7195 is a High Voltage Power Supply. So that, as a rule, it
must not be powered when the outputs are disconnected. It is
essential that the usual precautions for measurements of high
voltages are taken to avoid the danger of electrocution of personnel.

2. DESCRIPTION OF THE TH7195 POWER SUPPLY
2.1. Description
• The TH 7195 is a microprocessor controlled High Voltage Power Supply (HVPS),
designed to drive 7", 9" and 12" x-ray Image Intensifiers (XRII).
• It operates from a 24 V ± 10 % DC input source, with 350mA max current.
• In TH7195-2, TH7195-3 and TH7195-4 versions, several ways are provided to control the
power supply and to adjust and switch between the XRII input fields (see chapter 3.3):
- Three Control Input 1, 2 and 3 can be used either to switch between several pre-set XRII
fields, or to control linearly the G1, G2 and G3 electrode voltages of the XRII,
- Three encoders can be used to adjust manually the G1, G2 and G3 voltages, for each
XRII field,
- A set of 5 switches can be used to select the different operating modes of the power
supply,
- A serial port interface can be used to take control of the power supply, to set G1, G2 and
G3 voltages, to select the XRII field, or to measure back the real electrode voltages (see
chapter 3.4).
• Seven test points are available, which provide a low voltage proportional to the five
electrode voltages, as well as to the photocathode and the getter currents (see chapter 3.5).
• TH7195 is designed for use with pulsed X-rays (maximum photocathode instantaneous
current : 50 µA with no significant loss of resolution on the XRII).

2.2. Designed application

The TH7195 High Voltage Power Supply is designed for RADIOLOGICAL MEDICAL
APPLICATIONS.
It can also be used for Industrial Non Destructive Controls. In such applications, be careful that
the TH7195 specification meets your specific requirements.

3. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
3.1. Mechanical interface

The approximate weight of the TH7195 power supply is 1.3 kg.
The TH7195 power supply has six slits on lateral braces to allow different ways for fixing.

Mode control and the micro-computer are optional, and depend on the equipment.
All inputs and outputs are protected against short cuts and light over voltages.
The continuity of the safety ground must always be maintained.
To prevent electrical shocks and personal injury, be sure there is no

damage on the sheath of the output cables.
3.3. Adjustments
On the TH7195, U5 and U4 voltages are fixed, but U3, U2 and U1 voltages are adjustable in
ranges which depend on the version. The typical values of the ranges are given below :

The TH7195-2, TH7195-3 and TH7195-4 versions enable the adjustment of U1, U2 and U3
voltages in their respective ranges, to obtain the different input fields on the XRII.
This adjustment can be done through different ways, selected by internal switches on the side of
the power supply:

Switch 3 is reserved for future use and should always be OFF.
3.3.1. Standard XRII field mode control

This is selected when switch 2 is set to OFF (default) before power on.
In this mode, up to 8 different fields of the XRII can be selected through the control voltage
inputs (pins 14, 6 and 13 of the input Sub-D connector). These inputs are TTL compatible
inputs, as below:

The 8 modes are fully equivalent, and each has its own set of U1, U2, U3 voltages.

In general case, only 1, 2, 3 or 4 fields are used, so the mode selection can be done with a
simple switch connected as below:

To adjust the U1, U2, U3 voltages for each XRII magnifying mode (if applicable), follow the
description below:
- First, set the switch number 1 to OFF to unlock the voltages
- Select the chosen XRII magnifying mode via UC1, UC2, UC3 inputs (if applicable)
- Turn the adjustment slots G1, G2, G3 with a screwdriver, to adjust the respective U1, U2,
U3 voltages to the desired values.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each desired XRII magnifying mode (if applicable)
- Finally, reset the switch number 1 to ON to lock the voltages
3.3.2. Analogic 0-10V control

This is selected when switch 2 is set to ON before power on.
In this mode, U1, U2 and U3 output voltages are directly proportional to the input voltages
applied respectively to UC1, UC2 and UC3 control inputs, as indicated below:

This analogic mode is for compatibility with some existing
equipment only, and is not recommended for new equipment, as it
has not a high electromagnetic immunity.

3.4. Serial port

This port is provided to control the TH7195 by a micro-computer or any other programmable
device. It consists in 4 signals described below:
Signal Description
TXD output (pin 3) Serial data sent from the TH7195
RXD input (pin 2) Serial data received by the TH7195
DTR output (pin 9) Signal sent by the TH7195, indicating (when high) that it is
ready to receive data
CTS input (pin 10) Signal received by the TH7195, indicating (when high) that it
can send data
The characteristics of the serial port are the following :

- type: RS232C
- levels: high = +12V, low = -12V
- bauds: 2400 (default), 4800, 9600 or 19200
- word length: 8 bits
- parity: none
- stop bits: 1
- handshake: DTR/CTS only (not XON/XOFF)
- code: ASCII
To select number of baud, switches 4 and 5 should be set as below, before power on :

To control the TH7195, the computer must send instructions, and the power supply will
eventually send an answer. Any instruction sent via the serial interface will be priority on the
configuration switches setting and the input signals state.
Each instruction must be terminated with a LF, or CR LF.

When the powers supply gives an answer, it is terminated with a CR LF.
Decimal number with exponent notation are not allowed.

• xxx are possible dummy characters that can happen in some cases when receiving the very
first message in a session.
• TH719y is the generic HVPS name, with a possible revision index.

• -v is the HVPS version (actually represents the number of zoom modes).
• zz are the last 2 characters of the HVPS type (example : 95 for TH7195).
• [number] is the individual HVPS serial number.
• [version] is the software revision number, with x.y-zz format.
• [date] is the release date of the software version.
• [authors] is the HVPS designer names.
• [factory] is the manufacturing company name.
• [CRLF] is the CR/LF character sequence, i.e. ASCII codes 13,10.
• _ is a « space » character (ASCII code 32).
• / is the field delimiting character.

3.6. Test points

Seven test points enable a check of the output voltages and currents, by supplying proportional
voltages relative to GND. These voltages can be checked by any voltmeter with an input
impedance higher than or equal to 10 M? .

3.7. Procedure for setting up a THALES XRII

The procedure should not be necessary if the power supply is delivered with the tube
1. - Set G3 : To adjust the size of the input image in accordance with the XRII magnifying
modes (if applicable), use the XRII test report to get the G3 value (G3 = U3),
2. - Set G2 : To adjust the focus electrode for the best center resolution (G2 = U2) use the
XRII test report value as a starting point,
3. - Adjust G1 : Eventually, for the best center and border resolution (G1 = U1),
4. - Reajust G3 : If necessary,
5. - Reajust G2 : For the best center resolution,
6. - Repeat steps 1 to 5 for each mode.
Remarks :
- For a slight change of size input, step 3 is not useful,
- U2 voltage (G2) is always the last adjustment to be done.

3.8. Factory settings

Values when the power supply is delivered with an XRII :

4. TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
Checking these points enables to locate a possible operating failure. It is nevertheless
recommended to return the power supply to the factory for expertise in the case of any problem
and to avoid all interventions on the components.
Effect Action
There is no output 1. Check the output voltages on the test points

If output voltages are OK
2. Check if the XRII is correctly focused (see the right voltage on the data sheet)
3. Check if there is a good electrical contact on the outputs of the power supply
If output voltages are not OK:
4. Follow instructions of chapter 3. to adjust XRII
There is no output 1. Check if the input voltage is in the limit of 24VDC ± 10%
voltage if yes :
2. Check if there is an input current on +24V of power supply
if OK :
3. Disconnect the High Voltage Power Supply and check the outputs are not
under short-circuit on the XRII
if no current :
4. An element of low voltage section is probably defective return the power
supply to the factory
