Basic Skills Drills
1. Serve 1. Flat serve
 A flat serve is hard and powerful, making it ideal
for a first serve in a tennis game. It is often the
fastest serve, hit with a Continental grip.
 The high speed of a flat serve makes it more
likely you’ll catch your opponent off guard,
delivering an ace or a defensive return you can
quickly put away. However, flat serves also have
a few disadvantages.

2. Slice serve
 The  slice serve effectively draws the opposing
player out wide to the deuce or ad side, leaving
the rest of the court open. The slice serve motion
creates sidespin, which can cause the ball to
bounce farther away when hit into the outer
corner of the service box, or right into your
opponent’s body when hit down the “T” (the
perpendicular center mark on the court).
 Slice serves also tend to sit low on the court due
to their sidespin and can get your opponent out
of position, giving you an opening to take
advantage.

3. Kick serve
 The kick serve is a heavy topspin serve, which
gives it its signature kick. This type of serve is for
more advanced players and takes a lot of
practice to master.
 Kick serves have less power and more control,
allowing the server to hit specifically to a player’s
weakness (depending on whether they are a
righty or lefty).

4. Underhand serve
 Underhand serves are the least commonly used
(and most controversial) serve technique in
tennis matches. They use a different service

motion than traditional serves, with the contact

point and follow-through traveling below the
shoulder.
 Underhand serves are mostly taught to children
just starting to play, or used by tennis players
who have injured their shoulders, backs, or
tossing arms and can no longer produce their
regular serving motion.
2. Stroke
1. Forehand
 The forehand is usually a player's strongest shot
because it uses the dominant hand.
 The key to a great forehand is footwork, racquet
preparation, and balance. Most players use a
semi-western grip to hit a forehand.
2. Backhand
 A one-handed backhand will provide you with
longer reach and is better-suited to handling shots
coming into the body than the two-handed
backhand.
 the two-handed backhand provides more stability
and control.
 Players also generally have less trouble hitting
high balls with a two-handed backhand than with
one-hand. Children may find the added strength of
a second hand more suitable.
3. Volley
 Players who approach the net will often make
contact with the ball while it is in the air. This
stroke is called a volley.
 Use a continental grip to hit volleys.
 The key to the volley is a compact backswing,
making contact with the ball in front of the body
(and to the side), and footwork.
4. Overhead
 The overhead is basically a tennis serve that
requires footwork and does not involve a ball toss .
 It is imperative that you get into position so that
you can hit the overhead in your ideal strike zone
(same place as the serve).
 You should not plant your feet until right before
impact.

3. Footwork 1. Prep Step

 Prep Steps are small controlled steps that are used
when preparing to set-up for a shot.
 Instead of taking large forceful steps, it is better to take
small controlled rapid steps, which allows for better
body position and the ability to change direction at the
last moment if needed.
 Prep steps are generally used when moving forward to
the ball or when a player has time on their
groundstrokes.
 Prep steps are performed by holding a wide leg base,
staying predominately on your forefoot, with knees
slightly bent and maintaining good athletic posture.

2. Split Step
 The split step is a fundamental step for all players.
 It is important to get it functioning right and use it
as often as possible.
 The split step is generally used when starting a
dynamic movement such as returning serve or
preparing to move to hit a groundstroke.
3. First Step
 tennis first step is one of the most important
factors in dynamic court movement.
 The first step is the one taken directly after the split
step or the first step taken in any direction. We
generally consider the first 2-3 steps part of the
first step (acceleration).
4. Crossover Step
 Many players use the crossover step when
changing direction moving laterally.
 It is an efficient way to set-up the initial lateral
movement.
 By taking the outside leg and crossing it over the
inside leg, players can then go into a lateral
shuffle. Players that have a dynamic cross over
step, will be able to get into position a lot easier
which will continually put pressure on their
opponent.

5. Transition Step
 The steps taken when changing direction on the
court are known as transition steps.
 These steps are critical for moving quickly around
the court as they provide players with more time.
 Transition steps are performed through multi-
directional movements.

6. Multi-Directional Step
 Multi-directional steps  take place on nearly every
point played in tennis.
 They are a combination of steps 1-5, as well as the
movement between each shot.
 Possessing good multi-directional movement gives
players the ability to maintain good posture while
