Abstract

Problems Encountered by Learners using printed Modular Distance Learning

amidst Pandemic in Cararayan National High School

The main purpose of this study is to find out the problems and challenges
encountered by students in the implementation of Modular Distance Learning in
Cararayan National High School during the School Year 2021-2022.

Teachers prepares the learning materials, weekly study guides and other learning
resources. These materials are accompanied by quality assured instructional packets
wherein the parent/guardians or students shall meet with the teacher and receive
instructions and learning materials to be accomplished by the learner for the week.
Learners focuses on eight subjects in a week with the intended number of modules per
subject. Learning materials in schools are also ready for dissemination as additional
learning reference for the students.
I. Introduction

This pandemic has paved the way for the implementation of Modular
Distance Learning as an immediate response to ensure educational continuity. At the
moment, Philippines is in the process of adapting to the new normal form of education,
and educators' continuous innovations, as well as the active participation of other
stakeholders, are the driving forces behind the success of the teaching-learning
process. According to a survey conducted by the Department of Education, learning
through printed and digital modules emerged as the most preferred distance learning
method among parents who enrolled their children for the upcoming school year
(DepEd).

Individualized instruction is provided by Modular Distance Learning,

which allows learners to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital
format/electronic copy, whichever is appropriate for the learner. Learners enrolled in
Modular Distance Learning have access to additional resources such as Learner's
Materials, textbooks, activity sheets, study guides, and other study materials. A module
structure is very useful in online learning environments because it aids the presentation
and application of the online teaching and learning process. Students who understand
the course structure spend less time guessing what is expected to them and has more
time focusing on the content and activities.

Modular distance learning has also advantages, and disadvantages to

the students such as, students’ time are mostly away from gadgets and devices that
produces radiation like cell phones, computers, laptops and etc. The disadvantage is
that the students are stressed because of learning the lessons by their own without
guide from any teacher. And some teachers cannot check on their phones whenever
their students ask some questions about any lesson, because they mostly work on their
student's paper.

Based on our observation maybe the reasons or the problems of the students at
Cararayan National High School, learner’s experiences are lack of facilitator at home,
and the second problem is the students who does not have internet accessibility and
does not own any gadget. Also, some students has a different responsibility on their
household that they forgot to answer their modules.

The goal of this research is to identify the most common problems that students face
using modular distance learning during pandemic. Teaching is possible but it has issues
and concerns due to these abrupt changes in the new educational system. This study
aims to determine the problems encountered in using Modular Distance Learning
Modality in the field of education.

V. Action Research Problem

This study will determine the Problems Encountered by Learners using Printed
Modular Distance Learning amidst Pandemic in Cararayan National High School.
Specifically, the following question will answer.

1. What is the Bio-demographic profile of teachers and students in terms in their?

a) Sex
b) Age
c) Grade level/ section
2. What problems encountered by Learners using printed modular distance learning
amidst pandemic.
3. What are advantages and disadvantages of modular learning to the students

Assumptions
The study is based on the following assumptions.

1. The bio-demographic profile of students in Cararayan National High School.

2. What problems encountered Learners using printed modular distance learning
amidst pandemic?

3. What are advantages and disadvantages of modular learning to the students?

Significance of the Study

guidance a proper monitoring, students’ progress.

Future researchers. Results of this study may be help useful to future

researchers that will provide information which can be used as basis in
conducting similar researchers.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study was focused on the problems encountered by the learners using
printed modular distance learning amidst pandemic, during the S/Y 2021-2022.
The respondents of this study are the students, in Cararayan National High
School, Naga City who are involved in this study.

The findings of the study may help to give an alternative way to the students like
home visitation to guide or facilitate them in answering their module, and all the
people in Cararayan Naga City.

Definition of terms

Printed Modular Learning- is the form of individualized instruction that allows

learners to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic
copy.
New Normal System- It is an online-based alternative learning modalities
which aims to be receptive and beneficial to learners amidst the enhanced
community quarantine (ECQ) period.
Home visitation- is a service that is provided within the home of families with
their young children. Home visitation provides support for parents to better
understand their child's development skills through daily home activities.
Pandemic- an outbreak of a pandemic disease. Has created the largest
disruption of education systems in human history, affecting nearly 1.6 billion
learners in more than 200 countries.
II. Methodology
The study used the descriptive design, a technique that helps the
researcher to obtain the information or the phenomenon being studied.
According to Calderon (2008), as cited by Alberto et al (2011). The descriptive
method is also known as statistical research it describes data and characteristics
about the population or phenomenon being studied
The respondents of this study are students in Cararayan National High
School, Naga City.
III. Results and Discussion

e. Stress

According to our survey questionnaire the top obstacle learners experience is

lack of facilitator at home which affects 61% of learners, and the second
problem is internet accessibility, which affects 45% of learners. Only 16%
percent of students don’t have access to mobile device or a computer. Due to a
lack of time, 80 percent of students were unable to their modules because of the
household chores. All of this are critical components of the educational.

IV. Conclusion
The study concludes the majority of the problem of student is lack of
facilitator and the second problem the Internet connection, and the last
one is no mobile phone or computer. There are some of the problems of
the student in Cararayan National High School.

V. Recommendation

The researchers recommend that the teachers need to find the alternative plans
on different problems encountered by the students. During modular distance
learning amidst pandemic. We, the researchers recommend to have a home
visitation to those students who are struggling in answering their modules, lack of
technology and don’t have access to the internet. Through this, it will the
educational system in Cararayan National High School to continue providing quality
of education to learners amidst pandemic. The researchers also recommend that
further studies on the current situation of teachers in the implementation of new
normal educational be conducted.
