Sheet 4

I. GENERAL
1 Preamble

This document covers 115KV & 13.8 KV CT &VT sizing calculation for the 115KV Lines, 115/13.8KV
Transformer & 13.8 KV Switchgear protection & metring at S/S Khafji 115/13.8KV S/S # 5.

2 Design Basis

2.1 CT and other Details

CT parameters are based on:

i) System X/R ratio is assumed to be 17.

ii)
As mentioned in PTS-11EN1031, Appendix IX, IEC-44, Part-6 and IEC 185, TPS class CT for all protection.
iii) CT secondary excitation limiting E.M.F and other parameters for CT sizing are calculated at adopted Tap as shown in
Relay and metering one line diagram ET-906823
iv) Lead length is considered for 2 ways.

v) Safety margin of 25% is considered forboth protection class CT and for metering class CT as per clause 17.g of PTS-
11EN1031, Appendix IX.

vi) Rct and Rl values are at 75oC.

vii) Zs (source Impedance) is calculated based on CB Interrupting capacity. The line Impedance value will be added to Zs
to derive the fault current (PF & EF) at zone1 end for CT excitation limiting E.M.F calculation. Only on way CT lead
length is considered for PF zone1 Ual calculation & 2way CT lead length is considered for EF zone1 Ual calculation.
CT sizing calculation for close-in fault is done for 3phase fault since 40KA/25KA(115KV/13.8KV respectively) fault
level is considered for 3 phase and 1 phase fault.

viii) The Line parameters for 115KV line between S/S KHAFJI-5 and KHAFJI-2 is assumed for a typical
UG Conductor of length 15.3 Kms

2.2 System Details

i) Nominal system voltage : 115 & 13.8KV

ii) Circuit Breaker interrupting capacity : 40KA (115KV)

: 25KA (13.8KV)
iii) X/R ratio : 17 for 115 KV system

2.3 CT lead size & Resistance

The
ρ
R= Ω/m
A
Where,
ρ = Specific resistance at 20oC
A = Cross-sectional area of conductor
For other temperatures,
ρϑ = ρ20 [1 + α (ϑ - 20)]
ϑ = Temperature
α = Temperature Co-efficient

Value of ρ & α are given in table 2.7 of ABB switchgear manual

reference book for a temperature of 20oC.
Resistance for 6sq.mm cable per meter @ 75OC

= 0.0175
[1 + 0.004(75 - 20)]
6

= 0.0035 ohms/m
Resistance for 6 sq.mm conductor/m @ 75OC = 0.0035 ohms/m

2.4 Terminology

Isn : Rated secondary current

Eal : CT excitation limiting E.M.F (Eal = Ual Since leakage is negligible in TPS class CT)
O
Rct : Maximum resistance of secondary winding at 75 C

Rb : Rated resistive burden

ktd : Dimensioning factor

2.5 Important formula for TPS class CT:

Eal = kssc * ktd * (Rct + Rb) * Isn

Ual = kssc * k * (Rct + Rb) * Isn

Note:
It is not necessary to repeat the calculation for earth faults, as the phase reach (3∅) calculation is the worst case for CT dimensioning.

Vs' = If * (Rs + Rp)

Max. through fault current of the transformer (lf)

= 25000 / 4000
= 6.25 A
Vs' = If * (Rs + Rp)
= (6.25 x (14 + 0.875)

Relay operating voltage (VA) = Burden x Relay setting current

The relay will be set at 10% since the setting should be sensitive for REF protn. = 0.10 A
Relay operating voltage = 1 x 0.1 = 0.10 V

Rsr = (93 - 0.1) /0.1 = 929 Ohms

VsA = 0.1 + 929 x 0.1 = 93 Volts

Ual = 2 x VsA = 2 x 93 = 186 V

Safety margin =25% = 1.25 x 186

Result 2 is higher than other Results, hence CT sizing is calculated based on result 2.

Ual ≥ 166 V

Since the available Ual (1400V) is higher than the required Ual (166V), the CT is suitably sized.
