2. Motivation
Now class let me show you pictures about the painful reality that is now
happening around us. Look closely and tell me your observations with the
illustration.

What can you see on the first picture?

(The first picture is an example of air pollution)
That is a good observation. How about the second picture?
(The second picture is an example of water pollution)
Alright then. Thank you for that. Now how about the third illustration?
(The third illustration is a land pollution)
Indeed! That is a logical observation. Great job. And now, for the last image. How
would you describe it?
(The last picture is an example of toxic pollution)
Your observation is very keen. Well done! Now based on the pictures, what is
being affected from these events?
(Environment!)
Very good! Now speaking of environment, let me tell you a story of a girl who
fought to stop pollution and save our environment.

B. Developmental Activities
A. Presentation
Story Telling:
Once upon a time, there was a girl born and raised in Pennsylvania. As a
college student, she was fascinated with her biology class. After World War II
ended, people began using pesticides to save their agriculture from insects. This
disturbed the girl because she knew that sprays were not safe. She studied and
took notes from what is happening around her. Spraying is good for killing
harmful insects but it killed friendly insects, too. Pesticides killed the bees that
pollinate therefore the fruit trees and plants that needed the bees cannot
reproduce anymore. Scientist tried to control nature since they wanted nature to
work for us. The girl put her warnings in writing. She wrote a book to warn that
the danger was real. All over the world, people read the book. They asked
questions. Should we try to control nature? Or should we protect nature? The girl
made things happen. Her book affects us all. Everywhere people began to
understand. Today, our world is better. It is better because of the girl.

Okay class, what disturbed the girl at the middle of the story?
(The use of pesticides)
Why is it that using pesticides disturbed the girl?
(She was disturbed because she knew that sprays were not safe)
So if you have the action and the result, what kind of relationship is that?
(Cause and Effect)
Very good! So therefore class our topic for today is all about
“Cause and Effect”
But before that, we are going to have first an exciting activity that will test
whether you know how to give cause or effect.
B. Activity
1. Group the pupils into 8 groups
2. Have them set standards for group work
3. Distribution of activity cards and materials
4. Performing the activities
5. Supervision
6. Posting of work
7. Reporting

C. Analysis/Discussion
“Cause and Effect”
Well done! Now before we check your activity, let’s first discuss what is cause and
effect. Class, let’s go back to our story a while ago.
What do you think is the story all about?
(The story is all about the girl who fought against pollution)
Very good! Why do you think the girl wrote a book?
(The girl wrote a book to warn the people about the danger of using pesticides)
What is the result after she wrote the book?
(People begun to understand and today our world is now a better place)
So class, if you were the girl or the person way back those times, will you do the
same thing as what the girl did?
(Answers will vary)
Okay, now I will be showing you some sentences taken from the story. Tell me what
happened next or why it happened.
 Instruction: Students will supply the missing cause or effect in every given
sentence taken from the story. Only the middle sentences will be posted on
the board. The left and right columns will serve as an absolute answer.
Sentences on the red boxes are the causes while sentences on the blue boxes
are the effects.

ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT
Now try to look at each sentence. What have you noticed?
(They show cause and effect relationship)
Very good! Which sentences shows the cause?
(The sentences on the red cartolina)
That’s correct! Why do you think that the sentences on the red cartolina are the
causes?
(Because they are the reasons why the other event took place)
Very good! How about the sentences on the blue cartolina?
(They are the effects)
Why do you think that these sentences are the effects?
(Because they are the results of what happened)
Now basing on the given sentences on the red cartolina, what is a cause?
(Something that produces an event and it answers the question “why”)
How about the effect based on the blue cartolina?
(The result/s when something is done and it answers the question “what”)
Well done! Okay now let’s check your activity.
(Checking of Activities)

D. Abstraction
1. How did you identify that a statement expresses a cause or an effect?
 Cause – The reason that the other event took place and if it answers the
question “why”.
 Effect – The result when something is done and if it answers the
question “what”.
Now please put in your mind that cause and effect is just like a fairy tale. The
character does something first that make something else happen. Remember, the
cause is when “The prince found his princess” and the effect is, “They live happily
ever after”.
E. Application
Earlier I told you a story of a girl with a very strong awareness about the
environment. That story is actually a true story of a girl named Rachel Carson.
Rachel Carson fought to save our world and she was the reason behind the annual
celebration of the International Earth Day.
Now class let me ask you, as a student what can you do to save mother earth?
(Segregate our garbage properly, etc.)

ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT
In your own experiences, were you able to do your part in taking care of our
environment?
In what ways? Can you cite an instance in your life that you were giving
importance to the environment?
Class, stopping pollution is the best solution because remember, only when the
last tree will die, the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught, we will
realize that we cannot eat money and one way to take care of it is to segregate our
garbage properly, which leads us to an activity.

Instruction: Stay cool. Don’t litter.

1. Group the pupils into 2 pairs

2. Each pair will locate 2 cue cards provided by the teacher under their desk
3. Each learner will read what is written in their cue card and identify whether it
is a “cause” or an “effect”
4. Pairs are not allowed to exchange cue cards with other pairs;
5. Then, they will put the cue card to its proper garbage basket.
6. For every correct answer, the pair will have additional points.
