¿WHO IS SALOMON HAKIM DOW?

Neurosurgeon and researcher born in Barranquilla,


on June 4, 1929. Salomón Hakim Dow was born
into a family of Lebanese immigrants living in the
department of Atlántico. He studied music and
high school at the Hermanos Maristas school in
Ibagué, and then went on to the San Bartolomé
school in Bogotá.

HIS IS STUDIES?
He graduated as a doctor of medicine at the National University of
Bogotá, with a prize-winning thesis. He continued his studies in the
United States, at Harvard, with a specialization in neurosurgery at
the Lahey Clinic in Boston, He developed extensive and fruitful
teaching work at the Andes, National and Javeriana universities, in
the areas of medical physics, neurology, neurosurgery and
biomedical engineering.
Dr. Hakim conducted important research that has given him
worldwide recognition.
CAREER PATH?
In the field of neurology, he made valuable contributions such as the description of
the hydrocephalus syndrome with normal pressure, called Hakim's syndrome, in
1964; New theories on the dynamics of the cerebrospinal fluid and the first chapter
on treatable senile dementias. His description of the syndrome is found in all
medical encyclopedias and dictionaries. For many years, Dr. Hakim researched the
mechanics of the intracranial cavity, He wrote more than 70 articles on matters of
his specialty, in magazines around the world; he has taught courses in numerous
hospital and university institutions; belongs to Colombian and foreign scientific
societies and has received distinctions, awards and decorations for his
achievements in the scientific field
CHRONOLOGY
❖ 1922: born on June 4 in Barranquilla.
❖ 1964: describes the syndrome of hydrocephalus with normal pressure,
which begins to be called Hakim syndrome.
❖ 2011: dies on May 5.
