MUSIC & COMPOSERS
A lied is a German poem, usually lyric and strophic. It can also be a song, which has
such a poem for its text. It has traditionally been performed as a song for solo voice
and piano accompaniment in German-speaking countries during the Classical and
Romantic periods.  Lied Ohne Worte (means Song Without Words in German) by
Rolf Rudin It is written in the style of the Romantic lieder, although that was not the
composer’s sole intent. Lied ohne Worte is also modeled after the piano nocturnes
of Mendelssohn.

Hanover Festival by Philip Sparke is commissioned by Peter Boor, conductor of the

Hanover Wind Symphony, New Jersey, USA to celebrate its 15th anniversary in
Rolf Rudin (b.1961)
1999.

More well-known as a composer who writes for piano and symphony orchestra,
Prokofiev wrote March in Bb for band during 1943-44, in honour of May Day
(International Workers’ Day).  Prokofiev recycled his march in several sections of
his final opera, ‘Story of a Real Man’, op. 117 (1947-48), the most direct being the
opening number.

Intrepid Journey by Robert Sheldon (b. 1954)  is a musical tribute to the exploration
of the west by Lewis and Clark, depicting the bravery and incredible fortitude of
the explorers, the westward passage across the state, the dangers they
Sergei Prokofiev  encountered, and ultimately their successful return home.
(1891-1953)

Peterloo is the derisive name given to an incident that happened on August 16th,
1819 in St Peter’s Fields Manchester, when an orderly crowd met to hear a speech
on political reform. On the orders of the magistrates they were interrupted by the
yeomanry attempting to seize the banners they carried, and to arrest their speaker,
Henry Hunt. Cavalry were sent in, and 11  people were killed and 400 injured in the
ensuing panic. Malcom Arnold wrote Peterloo Overture  to portray the happenings
musically, it ends in triumph, in the firm belief that all those who have suffered and
died in the cause of unity amongst mankind, will not have died so in vain.

Crown Imperial March was originally written for the crowning of King Edward VIII
Malcom Arnold (1921- in 1937. However, Edward had since abdicated before the crowning and Walton
2006) revised the music for the accession of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

Vincent Persichetti was a piano and organ prodigy who was supporting himself with
his musical talents by age 11. As a composer, he had used many different styles in his
music. He would use aspects of atonaly, modality, polytonality and tonality in his
works. He composed the Serenade No. 1 for Ten Wind Instruments at the very young
age of fourteen.

Written in 1929. Serenade No. 1 for Ten Wind Instruments was one of the
contraband pieces of the period, written away from the conservatory, but under the
unofficial eye of his composition teacher, Russell King Miller.

Vincent Persichetti The five movements of this Serenade are: Prelude, Episode, Song, Interlude & Dance
(1915 – 1987)
