Experiential Learning Theory

The experiential learning theory

focuses on the idea that the best
learning comes from making
sense of your experiences (WGU,
2020). Experiential learning is a
hands-on approach where the
learner completes a task and then
reflects on their experience.

This learning theory can be applied by a technology coach by providing

the learner with opportunities for exploration instead of providing
direct instruction. The learner will make stronger connections through
self-reflection of their experiences.

Project-Based Learning Theory

Project-based learning utilizes

real-life scenarios to create
projects for the learner to work
through (WGU, 2020). Project-
based learning emphasizes
learning by doing. The projects
often reflect problems that they
may encounter in the future.

This learning theory can be applied by a technology coach by delivering

instruction that is task-oriented instead of relying on memorization
(Pappas, 2013). The learning activities should be in context of common
tasks the learner will perform.

Adult Learning Theory

Knowles made 5 assumptions about

the characteristics of adult learners
(Pappas, 2013). These differ from
past assumptions about child
learners. These assumptions are that
adults are self-directed, build upon
past experiences, are oriented to
tasks involving their social roles,
have a need to apply information
immediately, and must have internal
motivation to learn.

This learning theory can be applied by taking into account the wide
variety of learner backgrounds and differentiating the material based
on their experience level (Pappas, 2013).
