ACTIVITY 7: Please answer the following survey as a Student Nurse (BSN 4) of San Isidro College,
being assigned in the different clinical areas.
Purpose: To assess the competencies that are already capable of practicing nursing (provides patient care), at a beginning level, with individuals, families and groups in a variety of settings. Instructions: Read each statement carefully, then check the box that most represent frequency of your experience in the clinical area/classroom (duty/class). Please don’t hesitate to write in the remarks if needed. A. In the Clinical Area Occasionally Frequently Constantly Remarks (0-2.5 hours) (2.5-5.5 hours) (5.5 hours >) 1. Head to toe assessments: include listening to heart, lung and bowel sounds with a stethoscope, checking incisions and making other relevant observations. 2. Receives and gives verbal reports on each patient at the start/end of each clinical experience. 3. Prepares patients for transport to other hospital departments; prepares patients for discharge. 4. Prepares and administers medications prescribed by physicians/advanced practice providers. 5. Documents in the medical record, i.e., either handwritten or via data entered into an electronic medical record. 6. Participates in activities of daily living. 7. Provides patient education and discharge planning for patients and families. 8. Provides emotional support to patients and families. 9. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served in the assigned clinical area. 10. Assesses and interprets age-related data and identifies age specific nursing care requirements for assigned patients. 11. Recognizes and responds appropriately to audible and visual alarms. 12. Delivers culturally competent nursing care respectful of patient’s individual beliefs. 13. Administers CPR (Basic Life Support for the Health Care Provider) to patients in cardio-pulmonary arrest, on an emergency basis. B. In the Classroom 1. Preserves pertinent verbal lecture material for future reference. 2. Participates in small and large group discussions, problem- based learning and simulation. 3. Answers questions when called upon; presents brief oral reports and formal presentations. 4. Reviews supplemental learning materials (hand-outs, audiovisuals, power-point presentations, etc.) 5. Completes written and competency examinations within time limitations defined by the faculty. 6. Prepares handwritten and typewritten reports and scholarly papers. 7. Utilizes a variety of software including Learning Management System and other web-based programs as required. C. Temperament 1. Constantly demonstrate a professional demeanor/attitude and remain visibly calm in a variety of clinical settings. Able to respond appropriately to emergencies. 2. Constantly exercise appropriately clinical reasoning/ judgment skills and have the ability to set priorities. 3. Demonstrate the ability to self-regulate. 4. Professionally accept constructive feedback and remain emotionally stable when performing under stress. 5. Cope with a variety of unpredictable situations and demonstrate flexibility.
